Five years ago, Microsoft created the Office of Responsible AI, a major step in our efforts to advance AI responsibly. It's been an incredible privilege to lead this team over the past five years and to oversee the tremendous growth we've experienced. We've built a governance system across the company that harnesses the very best of research, policy, and engineering. And our work has shown that incorporating guardrails for AI systems doesn't just make for a responsible product, it makes for a better product overall. In the Office of Responsible AI, we're tasked with looking at the big picture: how might this AI system be used, for good or for ill, months or years from now? But we're also in the weeds of AI systems Microsoft develops and deploys, ensuring humans are kept in the loop and risks are identified and mitigated. By incorporating responsible AI from the earliest stages of a product, we've helped Microsoft ship thousands of AI systems safely. This work is often challenging, and there are many unknowns ahead, but there's no team I would rather be on this journey with. I'm proud to be leading this work because I'm optimistic that AI, if governed effectively, can enhance human potential and solve some of society's greatest problems. 2moI applaud Microsoft for establishing the Office of Responsible AI and their continued efforts in this area. Yet, I can’t help feeling a deep sense of unease, because instinctively, it feels wrong to me that the companies creating and owning the most powerful AI technology and personal data also influence regulatory oversight and independent risk-impact assessment.
