The way China regulates its tech industry can seem highly unpredictable. The government can celebrate the achievements of Chinese tech companies one day and then turn against them the next. But while the government may have been tough on consumer tech platforms like Alibaba and Tencent, its AI regulations are intentionally lax to keep the domestic industry growing. https://trib.al/lXDy8OG

The world’s fastest supercomputers can now perform more than an exaflop’s worth of calculations (that’s a 1 followed by 18 zeros). New machines that can crunch scientific data at these speeds will enable scientists to perform more sophisticated simulations of the climate, nuclear fission, turbulence, and more. We named exascale computers to our new list of the 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2024. Here's why. https://trib.al/Btm0fUH

It’s tricky to get robots to do things in environments they’ve never seen before. Typically, researchers need to train them on new data for every new place they encounter, which can become very time-consuming and expensive. Now, researchers have developed a series of AI models that teach robots to complete basic tasks in new surroundings without further training or fine-tuning.

Think about one of your earliest childhood memories. It’s probably a little fuzzy, right? Maybe you remember who you were with, but you don’t remember what they were wearing. Or perhaps you recall being somewhere specific—a park, a hospital, or a classroom—but you can’t quite put your finger on what it looked like, and there isn’t a photo to look at to jog your memory. But what if there were a photo you could reference? This company is using generative AI to illustrate people’s most precious memories, turning these memories into photorealistic images and helping families reclaim a past that was never caught on camera. https://trib.al/cdNcXlY
