Have you ever wanted to contribute to the open-source? Do you wonder where to start or how to start? Just search "Good First Issues" in google A #good_first_issue is a label that #GitHub-hosted #open_source projects use. Good First Issue is an initiative to curate easy pickings from popular projects, so developers who've never contributed to open-source can get started quickly. Open-source maintainers are always looking to get more people involved, but new developers generally think it's challenging to become a contributor. You can explore thousands of #good_first_issues here: https://lnkd.in/dgy-Q-Yb

🚀 Exciting News for the JIIT Community and Open Source Enthusiasts! 🚀 Today marks a significant milestone for the JIIT Companion app as I take a giant leap towards fostering an open and collaborative environment. I'm thrilled to announce that the JIIT Companion repository is now open source! 🎉 Built with over 10,000 lines of code using React Native, this app was designed before the Chat GPT era with a vision to enhance the JIIT experience. From checking the Annapurna menu, tracking events, monitoring attendance, to getting the latest seating plan, JIIT Companion has been the go-to app for more than 1,000 users, making campus life easier and more accessible. Why Open Source? Open sourcing JIIT Companion is our commitment to transparency, innovation, and community collaboration. We believe in the power of open source to drive creativity, improve the codebase, and offer everyone the opportunity to contribute to the development of an app that's by the JIITians, for the JIITians. Features at a Glance (at that time, not updated anymore): Weekly Updated Annapurna Menu: Know what's cooking! Seating Plan: Access your seating plan as soon as it's available. Event Tracking: Stay updated with all campus events, with one-tap registration coming soon. Enhanced Attendance and Time-Table Visualization: Experience your attendance and timetable in the most basic, yet fast and elegant UI. Get Involved! Whether you're a student, alumni, or just an open-source enthusiast, your contributions can make a significant difference. Feel free to fork the repository, star it if you like what you see. Let's spread positivity about open source and continue building something that has a real impact on our community. Your feedback, suggestions, and contributions are what will drive this project forward, since I don't have time to maintain it anymore. 🌟 Give a star if you fork it! 🌟 Together, let's make JIIT Companion not just an app, but a movement towards a more open, collaborative, and innovative future. #OpenSource #ReactNative #Community #Collaboration

Open-source development does not have to be difficult (even for a beginner). Every year, the Grace Hopper Celebration includes an open-source day where we can explore projects and contribute to them with the help of project managers. This year, I contributed to Google ‘s Blockly and later hosted a braindate at the conference explaining my approach to open-source development. It was an amazing discussion. I talked with talented women who wanted to contribute to open-source but felt intimidated by the size and complexity of projects. At the end of our conversation, they told me they felt more empowered to contribute, now that they had a clear guideline on how to do it. I’ll make a separate post about what we discussed. Hopefully, it will make open-source contributions more ‘open’ for beginners. 😊 #ghc23 #ghc2023 #opensourcedevelopment #opensource #opensourcecommunity #opensourcedevelopment #google #googledevelopers #opensourceprojects #github #githubactions #coding #webappdevelopment #webdevelopment

Opting to incorporate a specific open source project as a component of your product is a significant decision with numerous long-term consequences. You and your team might find yourselves wondering: - What is the maturity of the project? - Is it being used operationally? - Does it boast a strong and diverse contributor base? - Are there any security concerns regarding how the project manages contributions? - How is the developer experience and the quality of the documentation? Analyzing open source project metrics can certainly reduce the overall risk when selecting one project over another, or deciding whether to go the fully-managed proprietary route if that's an option. I really love the metrics mentioned in this article: https://lnkd.in/eKaYbhpv Here’s a snapshot of the metrics: ⚡️ Number of Downloads ⚡️ Number and Quality of Issues ⚡️ User engagement-mailing lists, forums, and Q/A sites ⚡️ Usage Analytics (the article references a “call home feature” — I don’t know how I feel about this one) ⚡️ Number of ratings, overall score (Stars) and number of Forks ⚡️ Social Media Activity ⚡️ Web Traffic ⚡️ Documentation Availability ⚡️ Number of and scale of Sponsored Events (this one’s “meh”, IMO) How do you measure the risk when choosing to use and consume open source projects? #opensource #software #riskmanagement
