Volunteerism is about the home we build together. Volunteerism is about community, it's about humanity, it's about pouring into the very soul of existence; lending a helping hand. It is not for sordid gain, wealth, or pride; it's about being a part of something greater than oneself. ----------- These words summarize my time with the Fellows at the Young African Civic Fellowship in Liberia - September 28. While I'm being thanked for availing myself, I'm rather grateful to the fellows for availing themselves and sharing unreservedly. Through them, I see hope for Liberia and for Africa. Around the world, workers who work in remote or isolated locations, where nobody is watching, are particularly vulnerable to occupational safety and health deficits. Ripples of hope - Reducing occupational risk in in rural Africa is part of a series of documentaries that IOSH has produced to better understand the compounding risk factors that hard-to-reach workers face on a regular basis. These projects - the result of IOSH's strategic engagement function with key international partners- look at supporting workers in Ghana and Kenya, as well as developing a better understanding of the issues that contribute to ill-health, injury and death in the informal economy, gender equality, agricultural work, garment industries and remote rural locations. This is of particular relevance, considering that both regions are in the process of updating their national occupational safety and health frameworks. This compelling video focuses on the realities of fishmonger women in Lake Victoria in Kenya. With men dominating the fishing activity, women are normally the ones processing and selling the catches. As mothers and carers they are also instrumental in sustaining their families and the community. While women are critical in contributing to the socioeconomic growth and the livelihood of the community many pay a heavy price becoming infected with HIV/AIDS or heavily exposed to occupational safety and health risks. The documentary features the complexities and day-to-day experiences of these workers. Amplifying marginalized voices and engaging in open dialogue can create a ripple effect. 🌊 Groups can be catalysts for collective action. By forming coalitions, advocating for policy changes, and providing essential resources, they can build a stronger foundation for equity. Organizing community events and challenging power structures are vital steps towards dismantling systemic barriers. ✊ Organizations have a responsibility to create a just and inclusive environment. Conducting equity audits, diversifying leadership, and investing in anti-racism training are essential. I want to introduce you to Global G.L.O.W. an inspiring organization I had the honor to learn about through the amazing Laura Probst. 🌟 Founded in 2012. 🌟 57 mission-aligned schools, community centers and NGOs 🌟 Working directly with girls in vulnerable communities to address their unique, real-time needs. 🌟 Operating in more than 30 countries and across the United States. 🌟 Over 11,500 girls are enrolled in Global G.L.O.W. out-of-school programs. Amongst the many ways we can contribute to this cause, there is a deliberate network of speakers who purposely volunteer their time to enable the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗚.𝗟.𝗢.𝗪. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 provide hour-long talks on issues impacting women and girls globally and speak free of charge in service to the organization. The accomplished speakers are a great fit for leadership conferences, employee resource group programming, and educational events. 🌟 Most importantly about the Speaker Ambassadors is that they are joined by an adolescent Global G.L.O.W. girl who will also have the forum to share directly with you her experience on what it is like being a girl in her community (for example, being a working young mother, life in a refugee camp, or navigating loss) and raise so much needed awareness. 💡 It's rare to see real, authentic stewardship in 2024. 🤔 While I don't think it's necessarily wrong to lean in to stewardship activities when there are potential self serving benefits...I think it is tokenistic and lacks integrity when personal gain or exposure is a primary driver. No one would be likely to admit it, but what tools do you use to determine authentic stewardship or otherwise? Who is authenticly stewarding your region?

ARE YOU STEWARDING YOUR PLACE? Stewardship is a mindset that used to predominate among Americans, Canadians, Australians, and other developed countries, but which has yielded to more self-interested consumption and self-interest. This leaves fewer community leaders—“stewards”—ready to step in when someone has a problem, fewer mentors for couples and children who need them, and fewer institutions that can organize residents to tackle common challenges. Stewardship entails leaning into place and taking responsibility for both leading and uplifting residents as well as enhancing resources so that others can use them (and not just consuming them). This requires intimate knowledge of the local landscape—everyone from local officials to religious leaders to businesspeople to senior members of the community—and a willingness to sacrifice one’s time and sometimes resources for the greater good. It means acting as investors, philanthropists, advisers, mentors, matchmakers, and participants in the countless efforts, big and small, that improve a place. Human scale is essential: we are more likely to feel a sense of obligation to others and seek to steward a place and its resources when our lives are deeply intertwined. In a country as vast as the United States (and Australia and Canada), we should aim to structure society in such a way as to give each of us—whether rich or poor, prominent or ordinary—a stake in smaller social units where we matter to the unit’s success.
