Delighted to announce the successful completion of my MSc. 1 Design Studio Open Labs project in Leiden!   The thorough analysis identified challenges like a lack of social interaction, a need for communal spaces, and homogeneity within the community. In response, my design strives to forge a more inclusive and dynamic social environment through the implementation of socially sustainable architecture.   Drawing inspiration from astronomy, the design takes shape as an 'Astronomy Science Lab,' engaging children, parents, students, and researchers alike. The design features a solar system theme with blocks representing different planets, each with a unique appearance. The interconnected design, featuring playful elements like slides and climbing structures, fosters interactions among children, parents, and visitors which makes the ‘playground’ representing the ‘sun’ of the solar system. The central core symbolizes the gravitational force keeping the 'planets' floating in space, while varied roof functions optimize space and encourage interaction.   The building's facade is a visual spectacle with experiential openings, varied angles, and a steel grid structure. Sustainability takes center stage with a 3D-printed material, inspired by Aectual, lending unique aesthetics to the blocks, each representing planets in different colors. Sustainability is further emphasized with the use of the CLT system for constructing the building blocks.   The interior blocks create a distinct atmosphere, emphasizing an indoor-outdoor connection. Slanted columns not only contribute to structural stability but also house integrated ventilation and lighting elements, enhancing the immersive experience. The building's skin follows block structures, maximizing space efficiency and introducing varied lighting effects through strategic shadow play.   The project effectively bridges the gap between the historic city and Science Campus, offering viewpoints to unite these areas. Today in my Parsons School of Design - The New School class, students explored the possibilities of a future in which “capitalism” (as both a dominant way of economizing and an omnipresent way of being) continues on the path it’s on. Using the futures cone as a guide, they mapped out distant futures that ultimately (and unfortunately not surprisingly), reflected the bleakness of our current moment. They ranged from endless wars, space colonization, and irreparable class divisions to ecological destruction, automated everything, and a dwindling global population. Each seemed to lead to an inevitable collapse. We ended class by asking “what if we as designers intervened using complex living systems as a guide?” - centering interdependence, circularity, decentralization, multi-species relationships, and more. This was a LOT harder for them to imagine because we are taught that “capitalism” is all there ever was, ever is, and ever will be. These are young designers who want to stop the inevitable, who see the dire need for global systems change but feel hopeless in their ability to create it. If they can’t even imagine a better future, how can they be expected to design it? The question, for me, becomes how we as design educators can “jailbreak the imagination in order to make the impossible possible,” as Mariame Kaba writes. Well, we can start by turning the classroom into a safe space for postcapitalist dreaming, experimentation, and play.

How research fueled our victory: The Engineers Without Borders Competition 2012 Let's talk about the importance of research in design, and how, from my own experience, it can take good ideas to great ones. Many of you won't know this about me, but I was an Industrial Product Designer in a past life. In 2012, my team and I participated in the Engineers Without Borders competition which I'm proud to say that we won. Our design wasn't groundbreaking, but our commitment to research is what truly set it apart. The brief focused on the importance of play in early childhood development in East Timor. Our task was to create a playground to support this crucial aspect. 🔍 Key findings from our research: Cultural connection: We discovered a local myth, 'The Good Crocodile,' inspiring us to shape the playground like a crocodile. Sustainable materials: Bamboo was abundant locally, so we used it to make the playground sustainable and accessible. Community engagement: We learned about local needs and play preferences, ensuring our playground was meaningful and enjoyable. Land use understanding: Respecting the local Fugal land system, we designed a modular playground that they could be built where they saw fit. Skills development: We created LEGO-style instructions, empowering locals to build the playground themselves, minimising costs, and teaching new techniques. Safety and Inclusivity: We ensured the playground was safe for all children, including those with disabilities. While research on materials, tensile strengths, and construction techniques was vital, understanding local culture and people truly set us apart. This experience underscored a critical lesson for me: Research is the cornerstone of impactful design. It transforms good ideas into great solutions that are culturally relevant, sustainable, and deeply connected to the people they serve. “Good design changes lives.” That’s a motto repeated often in the College of Design — and it’s certainly true for the students who come to learn in its classrooms and studios. Students in the college can pick from one of five undergraduate pathways: architecture, design studies, graphic and experience design, industrial design, or media arts, design and technology. Each program prepares students for rewarding careers that enable them to bring the benefits of good design to the world, and most of these pathways offer graduate degrees. An Incident on Overcoming Unique Challenges Our recent project at Apeejay School, Park Street, presented us with a unique set of challenges that tested our ability to innovate and adapt. The school’s science labs are on the top floor - in rooms with slanting floors. It posed a significant challenge for us as school lab furniture manufacturers. One of the critical requirements for any science lab is to have flat tabletops to ensure safe and effective experiments. But how do you achieve this in a room where the floors aren’t level? The slanting floors meant that standard industrial adjusters at the bottom of the furniture, which are usually fixed in size, wouldn’t suffice. These adjusters are typically designed to offer minor corrections in height. But in this case, they were not enough to counter the degree of slant we encountered. Faced with this challenge, our team brainstormed and engineered a solution that would maintain the integrity of our lab furniture while ensuring the tabletops remained perfectly level. We decided to innovate by customizing the adjusters, designing each one with varying sizes to accommodate the specific slant of the floor in different areas of the room. This approach allowed us to fulfill our primary objective of providing flat-surfaced lab tables, despite the uneven floors. This project was more than just another job for us; it was a learning experience. We realized that challenges are opportunities in disguise—opportunities to push the boundaries of standard solutions and create something truly tailored to the client’s needs. We are proud of our team’s ability to think outside the box and deliver results that align with our commitment to quality and excellence. As compassionate #architects, we decided to participate in this design challenge to design a school building for the visually impaired to get better connected and be extraordinary manner we went ahead and named this organization as LUMINOUS - #THECENTREOFLEARNING. A suitable logo was prepared for this name which means one that shines in the dark. We are proposing this learning Centre to be a bright light in the lives of anyone who is partially or completely impaired by their vision. The main concept was drawn from #inclusivity & #safety. All desired zones are segregated as per the given design brief, such that the spatial integration stirs all other #senses including visual to help its users transverse easily within classrooms, workshops, labs and all congregation spaces. We have adopted a free form #layoutplanning and avoided angles in all extruded forms to facilitate an experience of smooth flow while commuting within the premises. The purpose of tactile ground surface indicators (#TGSI) is to give pedestrians who are blind, or who have vision impairment warning of hazards and directional information to aid navigation of the urban environment. Directional tactile indicators are used to give directional orientation in open spaces and designate the continuous accessible route to be taken to avoid. Every classroom is uniquely identified for these respective students with distinctive patches of fragrant flowers well laid out in the denoted shrubbery area defined in the layout. Each student and anyone moving around the classes may relate to a specific fragrance of the variety of flowers from rose, Lilly, lilac, jasmine, honey suckle, gardenia, tube rose, mogra, freesia, lavender, hyacinth and night blooming jasmine.
