Today, we honor those who lost their lives due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. One hundred forty million miles from Manhattan, Spirit and Opportunity sit on the surface of Mars with a tribute to these individuals. The rovers' Rock Abrasion Tools are adorned with cable shields manufactured from World Trade Center metal and affixed with the American flag. This year, Honeybee Robotics donated one of the two cable shields remaining Earth-side to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. We hope it serves as a small reminder that those fallen are memorialized beyond this world. Read more about the Mars tribute: https://lnkd.in/gggzA9bU

What Does Memorial Day Mean to You? As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, it's important to pause and reflect on the true significance of this day. Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer—it's a solemn occasion to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Reflect and Remember: Honor the Fallen: Take a moment to remember those who have given their lives in service to our nation. Their courage and dedication have protected the freedoms we often take for granted. Personal Stories: Think about the stories of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who have left behind families, friends, and communities. Their legacies live on in the hearts of those who knew them. Community Impact: Consider the impact these sacrifices have had on your community and the country as a whole. How has their service shaped the world we live in today? How Can We Give Back? Support Veterans and Families: Look for ways to support the families of fallen soldiers and the veterans who continue to serve our country. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply offering a kind word, every action counts. Educate the Next Generation: Share the importance of Memorial Day with younger generations. Teach them about the history and significance of this day, ensuring that the memories of those who served are never forgotten. Participate in Memorial Events: Attend local Memorial Day parades, and ceremonies, or visit a veterans' cemetery. These acts of remembrance are vital in keeping the spirit of the day alive. As we enjoy the hard-won freedoms, let's remember the sacrifices that made them possible. Today, we honor the memory of those who gave everything for the country they loved. Their legacy is our freedom. What does Memorial Day mean to you? How do you honor those who have sacrificed for our nation? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments below.

Memorabilia and the future Memorabilia can be a way to preserve our memories for future generations. They can help our children and grandchildren to learn about our lives and our experiences. For example, a person might create a scrapbook or photo album of their childhood. This scrapbook can help their children to learn about their parents' lives and to see what their parents were like as children. Similarly, a person might donate their memorabilia to a museum or historical society. This can help future generations to learn about the past and to see how people lived in different times. Memorabilia can be a valuable way to preserve our memories and connect with others. They can help us to understand our past, our identity, and the world around us.

3rd attempt to post on this post! Not wasting taxpayers' money would go a long way for others. They removed my previous posts which simply expresses DEA's willingness to hide their incompetence and disabled comments on the appropriate post. If this firm put out the truth and numbers of how many things they had to redo on this Highway 20 Safety Upgrade between Corvallis and Albany OR taxpayers would have something to say about this firm’s laughable ranking. How about it DEA, put out an itemized list of everything that had to be done two or three times because it wasn’t done right in the first place and how much taxpayers money was wasted in the process. In my driveway alone they had to do multiple things more than once. No wonder ODOT never comes in on budget with incompetence like this! Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for this! DEA was contracted for at least the Newberg-Dundee Bypass, the worst one, up 239% from original estimate. https://lnkd.in/epv6uESx
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King's question, "What are you doing for others?", deeply resonates at DEA. Guided by this principle, we dedicate ourselves to community stewardship and helping diversify the A/E industry. In 2023, we championed inclusivity in the A/E industry by awarding seven scholarships to women and underrepresented students. Additionally, we partnered with over 40 charitable organizations, reflecting our commitment to positive change. DEA employees are living examples of Dr. King's message. They provide leadership to 29 community-based organizations and professional associations, and actively participate in local volunteer efforts at each of our 30 locations. Their dedication to making a difference embodies our unwavering commitment to shaping a more equitable future for our communities and society at large.

As a veteran, I understand that Memorial Day can be a bit confusing to navigate. It’s more than just a long weekend; it’s a time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. If you're wondering how to truly celebrate Memorial Day tomorrow, here are a few meaningful ways: 🇺🇸Visit a Memorial or Cemetery: Pay your respects by visiting a local memorial or cemetery. Placing flowers or flags on the graves of fallen soldiers is a powerful gesture of remembrance. 🇺🇸Attend a Memorial Day Ceremony: Many communities hold ceremonies or parades to honor the fallen. Participating in these events can be a heartfelt way to show your respect and gratitude. 🇺🇸Pause for a Moment of Silence: At 3 PM local time, join the National Moment of Remembrance. It’s a small act, but a collective pause can have a big impact. 🇺🇸Support Veterans: Consider donating to organizations that support veterans and their families. It’s a way to give back and ensure that their legacy lives on through continued support. 🇺🇸Share Stories and Memories: If you know a veteran or have family members who served, take the time to listen to their stories or share memories of those who are no longer with us. 🇺🇸Display the Flag: Fly the American flag at half-staff until noon, then raise it to full staff until sunset. It’s a traditional way to honor those who have fallen in the morning and salute living veterans in the afternoon. Remember, Memorial Day is about more than barbecues and beach trips (though I love those too!). It's a day to reflect, honor, and remember. #supportourveterans #veteranshelpingveterans #veteransupport #veteranlife #specialforces #supportourtroops

“Conveying pain through simple, metaphorical ideas can help preserve the memory of events across generations”, — convinced architect and designer Elizaveta Feshchenko. On June 24, STEM is FEM and the Department of Public Communications of the KCSA held the event "How Kyiv will remember the Russian-Ukrainian war." The purpose of the event was to identify problems in the memorialization process and find ways to solve them. During the event, the experts discussed the current challenges and their own experience of working with memory. Then, there was a discussion in focus groups, which were attended by more than 50 guests. Among them were architects and urban planners, representatives from KCSA’s departments, public organizations, and charitable foundations, as well as relatives of fallen defenders. The discussion resulted in a list of problems and criteria for successful memorialization in Kyiv. This event is just the beginning of the project, as experts will work over the next months on developing an algorithm for preserving the memory of the Russian-Ukrainian war. We are proud to be involved in such an important project and to promote citizen participation in urban decision-making.

Since October last year, I've had the pleasure of writing a weekly social media post for work. These posts spotlight different JMA Collection objects and provide me with a great opportunity to further explore our collection. I get to peruse our collection, (which you can too, via our website!), pick an item- whatever it may be- do some research, and write about it. The festival of Tu B'Shvat took place last Thursday and the post I wrote is shared below. Not pictured, is my frustration during the writing process! Did you know that the vast majority of the JMA's audience and visitors are not Jewish? Some Jewish holidays, beliefs and traditions are easy to explain to a non-Jewish audience, but Tu B'Shvat is not. Its origins & meaning lie in the Torah, ancient land practices, Talmudic rabbinical interpretation and Temple history. In writing this post, I learned that sometimes you just have to write around the issue, rather than solve it, and I decided to leave the origins of the festival out. However, I definitely wanted to include the point about "Jewish dynamism", something that is not often talked about, even by Jews. The Jewish culture & people are well-known for our ancient origins and strong commitment to a Jewish future, and most people believe that this is due to our firm grasp on our traditions. While not untrue, I believe that a core factor of our survival is our dynamism- our ability to adapt and respond to changes & challenges. Tu B'Shvat is one example, but the most significant by far would be the implementation of rabbinic Judaism after the fall of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Also cut for brevity was all the information surrounding the Dunera ship, Tatura Internment Camp and the Jewish community in Shepparton. Yes, there used to be significant Jewish community in Shepparton, the majority of whom worked in agriculture. I would recommend spending some time researching these significant moments & events in Victorian Jewish history, including exploring them at the JMA. If you want to read all the posts I've written, follow the JMA on Facebook & Instagram!
🌳 Today is the festival of Tu B’Shvat, the new year of trees! This celebration is named after the date it falls on, the 15th of Shvat & is one of four new years in Judaism. Jews celebrate by getting in touch with nature & eating fruit. Tu B’Shvat is a great example of the dynamism of Jewish belief & tradition, as over the centuries it has been embraced by different groups, from medieval Kabbalists to modern-day environmentalists. This photograph depicts Hermann Zenter, a Dunera boy, picking pears in Shepparton, Victoria, during his forced internment at the Tatura Camp. 📷 Hermann Zentner picking pears, Shepparton, Victoria, 1941. Today, as we celebrate Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the true essence of this day. → It's not just about barbecues and long weekends. → It's about remembering the brave souls who fought for our freedom. → It's about honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. A few thoughts on how we can honor our heroes: → Take a moment to remember and honor the fallen soldiers. Their bravery and sacrifice have given us the freedom we enjoy today. → If you know a veteran or someone who has lost a loved one in service, share their stories. Keeping their memory alive is the least we can do. → Find ways to support veterans and their families. This could be through donations, volunteering, or simply lending a listening ear. Let’s not forget: → Freedom isn't free. It comes at a great cost. → Today is a day to remember those who paid that cost with their lives. → Let’s honor them by appreciating the freedoms we have and by striving to make this world a better place in their memory. P.S. - How are you honoring Memorial Day today? #memorialday

I often get asked how long Ukrainians will fight. I am German-American, but here is my perspective, without pretending to speak for Ukrainians: - Ukrainians are tired, exhausted, burned out, traumatized BUT - They never complain. - They know what's at stake: the future of their children, their freedom, democracy, the right to tell the truth, the very survival of their country and culture. - They are very resilient, well organized. Take the destruction at Ohmatdyt Children Hospital: six buildings are completely destroyed and many others heavily damaged. 600 child patients had to be evacuated; it was one of the most appalling attacks in modern European History. Yet, three weeks later, the debris is cleaned up, the Request for Proposal is issued, the doctors are working in other hospitals supporting the children, the fundraising is going strong. It's a herculean task to rebuild but the leadership and staff at this hospital will get it done. If we help: We can help in so many ways - one of them is to go to events that Ukrainians here in the US organize. The ice-skating show on the evening of August 17th in Seattle is such an event. If your family likes Disney kind of shows, you have to go! Tickets for 0-6 year old kids are for free. All proceeds support Ukrainians who lost their limbs.
