Hispanic Heritage Month - our co-ED Dr. Linet Mera may have turned it into…
Latin American, Latine, Latinx, and Hispanic Heritage Month
And yet, she says, it still doesn’t quite fit. Being Hispanic, or “Spanish-speaking” is not a race, it is a product of colonization. And plenty of Latine folks don’t speak Spanish. When we dig into the category it doesn’t really match up with the plentiful cultures and people it is purporting to encompass.
She asks you not to settle (pun intended) with “Hispanic Heritage Month” but to take a dip into being uncomfortable and sitting face to face with the terms and history. All it takes is trying and being open to change.
More importantly, she asks us all to "Consider the intersections: Indigeneity, disability, queerness, African heritage, religion, neurodivergence, single parent, elder, etc… and who we are without having to center colonization."
In this month of celebration and every day she urges us to think expansively about “Hispanic”. This year do it while you get out the vote so that the diversity of realities and voices regardless of label are represented in every election.
Follow Vote.org to get all the information you need to vote and to learn more about how you can do your part so all voices are heard.
