I was excited to see the latest AI Chatbot that I will find useful. The Marshallbot, based on Marshal Goldsmith’s work, which l highly recommend. With International Women’s Day and a recent conversation in mind, I asked this question of Marshall Goldsmith’s Marshallbot. “Question: How can women beat the glass ceiling and then make sure they do not repair it? Answer: To beat the glass ceiling and ensure it isn't repaired, women can adopt several strategies that I've discussed in my work, particularly in "How Women Rise," co-authored with Sally Helgeson. Here are some key approaches: 1. **Recognize and Claim Your Achievements**: Women often struggle with self-promotion, but it's crucial to acknowledge and communicate your successes. This doesn't mean you have to boast or become someone you're not; it's about finding a comfortable way to let others know about your contributions. 2. **Build a Strong Network**: Relationships are key to career advancement. Women should invest time in building a broad network of contacts within and outside their organization. This network can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement. 3. **Seek Feedback and Act on It**: Constructive feedback is essential for growth. Be open to feedback, even if it's challenging, and use it to improve. This also means not dismissing feedback due to perceived biases but rather considering what you can control and change. 4. **Develop New Skills**: The skills that got you to your current position may not be the ones that will take you to the next level. Continuously learn and adapt to ensure you're prepared for new challenges and roles. 5. **Challenge Stereotypes and Biases**: Be aware of unconscious biases and stereotypes that may affect perceptions. Address them when necessary and work to change the narrative through your actions and leadership style. 6. **Mentor and Sponsor Others**: Once you've broken through the glass ceiling, help others do the same. Mentorship and sponsorship are powerful tools for promoting diversity and preventing the re-establishment of barriers. 7. **Advocate for Systemic Change**: Work towards creating an organizational culture that values diversity and inclusion. This can involve advocating for policies that support women's advancement, such as flexible work arrangements and transparent promotion processes. 8. **Balance Excellence with Visibility**: While delivering high-quality work is important, it's also essential to ensure that your efforts are visible to those who can influence your career progression. By implementing these strategies, women can not only break through the glass ceiling but also help to dismantle it for others, creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all.” I think the last sentence is critical here, “…creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all.” What do you think? Part 3 Forging the future of AI Women can take the lead, IBM Institute for Business Value, Research Brief, March 2024   Part 3 of 5 Bias in action Men and women are judged differently when being considered for leadership roles.   Why might this be the case? Our 2023 Women in Leadership study offers a clue. When we asked business leaders to pick the most important skills for leadership candidates, they had different priorities for women and men. They said men need to be innovative, creative, analytical, and results oriented. Women, on the other hand, need to be strategic, visionary, and good communicators. It’s unsurprising then, that men are more eager to innovate, while women tread more carefully. Our survey found that more men than women see generative AI as a way to gain a competitive advantage in the job market (47% versus 40%) and increase their pay (38% versus 28%). Most women (56%) are focused on using generative AI to shore up job security. And when we asked women what would encourage them to use generative AI, company policies (59%) topped the list, followed by greater ease of use (58%) and increased confidence in security (51%). Playing aggressive defense is essential in the evolving AI landscape, but women must be ready to play offense, as well. Looking to the future, 77% of entry-level workers will see their job roles shift by 2025, as will one in four senior executives. In this environment, the women who have a vision for AI, understand how it aligns with strategic goals, and communicate how it should be used to deliver meaningful results will gain an unbeatable edge.
