This is less news, more like a deep cut: I've just started listening to a podcast by Jon Lukomnik called Outside In, recommended by a colleague. First episode I chose to listen to was an interview with fellow Canadian, Ellen Quigley, now an expat running the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, University of Cambridge. For anyone working in the field of climate change and responsible investing, you're likely thinking a lot about when/where/how asset owners can make a tangible impact as the climate crisis deepens. The conversation in this podcast episode dives into some challenging areas of our work, including how to think about divestiture and exclusions, and the relevance of collaborative engagements. Ellen's thinking around universal ownership drives us to think very differently about the role of investors, asset owners in particular, in driving emissions reductions, and makes the case for why asset owners need to be advocating for real economy policies that tackle climate change and inequality both. Ellen's gifted academic, accessible analysis combined with Jon's insightful and very human interview style makes this a great listen.
