Great example of how crisis response models for any community is never “this/or” but “both/and”. Even for a community that is known for their highly innovative non-law enforcement response, they were able to address a need in their response plan by adopting another complimentary model. Instead of ditching one for another and starting all over again, Eugene OR chose to see how both models can be distinct yet correlating, each working together for the needs of the same community. The day I began writing this article, I had the privilege of meeting with two outstanding law enforcement leaders. Encounters like these remind us of the possibilities within our reach. It's impossible to leave such earnest discussions without a surge of optimism about the future. Reflecting on my experiences, I can think of about twenty exceptional law enforcement professionals I personally know. These leaders possess the vision and capability to transform cities and metros from hotbeds of inhumane violence to thriving communities free from crime and the fear of crime. However, the potential of these leaders often remains untapped due to numerous barriers that hinder their ability to effect change. These barriers, often rooted in political, bureaucratic, and systemic issues, must be addressed to unlock the full potential of our law enforcement professionals. Imagine a future where these capable individuals are empowered to lead without hindrance, where their innovative ideas and strategies can be implemented to create safer, more vibrant communities. This is not a distant dream but an achievable reality if we commit to removing the obstacles in their path. As a community, we must advocate for and support these leaders, creating environments that foster their success. By doing so, we pave the way for safer, more prosperous communities where citizens can live without the constant fear of crime.
