Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute is the only health care center in the region participating in a clinical trial of the EnCompass F2 device, which filters embolic debris during transcatheter aortic valve replacement to potentially reduce the risk of stroke. Dr. Adnan Chhatriwalla, an interventional cardiologist, and his team completed one of the first cases for FDA submission. A TAVR procedure replaces a diseased aortic valve through a flexible tube or catheter without opening the chest. During this procedure, a small amount of debris can travel through the blood and up to the brain, increasing the chance of a stroke. The EnCompass F2 device catches the debris like a filter, protecting the brain and maintaining blood flow. The first 15 cases in the U.S., including Dr. Chhatriwalla’s, will be submitted to the FDA to seek approval for a larger trial. With more successful trials, heart patients will benefit from TAVR even more.

Genes from ancient mummies may explain why heart disease is so common today. For the past 16 years, Dr. Randall Thompson, a cardiologist at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, has co-led the HORUS Mummy Research Team that studies CT scans of hundreds of mummies from around the world spanning four millennia to search for atherosclerosis--the disease that causes heart attacks and strokes. The group's new findings suggest the same genes that predispose humans to atherosclerosis may have advantages earlier in life. “We began to think these genes must confer some benefit,” said Dr. Thompson. “If they were purely harmful, evolution would have eliminated them.” Read the full article: https://heyor.ca/pVdeL9

Dr. Aaron Grantham and Dr. Dany Jacob, interventional cardiologists, recently performed a live procedure for a virtual audience attending a global conference. Thousands of medical professionals from more than 100 countries attended the annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) Conference in San Francisco, where they watched the live broadcast from Kansas City. Dr. Grantham, assisted by Dr. Jacob, performed a chronic total occlusion (CTO) procedure, a minimally invasive intervention to restore blood flow to blocked arteries. Live case presentations give conference attendees a front-row seat to the decision-making, techniques, and innovations used by experts in interventional care. Saint Luke's was one of only 23 institutions in the world invited to present a live case this year. It is an honor to connect with other leaders in the field to teach and learn about new innovations that help improve the quality of life for our patients.
