Born Gloria Hatrick in Larchmount, New York, she became a model and gave it up to marry and raise a family. She was married twice, first to Edward Beale McLean, Jr. with whom she had two sons, Ronald and Michael; the marriage ended in divorce in January 1948. She was then married in August 1949 to actor Jimmy Stewart, with whom she had two daughters, Judy and Kelly. Jimmy would raise the two stepsons as if they were his own.
