S.T.A.R. Puppy Age Limit: 11 months*

Class Topics:

  • What to expect with a new puppy.
  • Socialization, handling & proper play skills with other dogs, people and new environments.
  • House training & potty schedules, teething & chewing, boundaries & manners.
  • Learning the skills in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program.
  • Taking the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test for your certificate.
  • Basic obedience commands such as sit, down, impulse control and recall.
  • Safe and happy puppy play time.
  • *According to AKC, puppies from 2-11 months can take the S.T.A.R. Puppy class to earn their certificate and are very much welcome to take this class. However, if you are looking for a class for your older puppy (6+ months) and are not interested in the S.T.A.R. Puppy program, we recommend that you sign up for the Bow Wow Basics class.
  • We know that your puppy might still be receiving their vaccinations. That is okay, you can still attend class. Prime socialization time is from 8-16 weeks and we want to get you started as quickly as possible. Send us copies of what you have so far and as you receive more, simply send us a clear copy of your new shot records.

Bow Wow Basics

  • This class will continue to advance on the basic obedience skills learned in Bow Wow Basics but with higher distractions. Our world is very distracting. Just because your dog can sit, lay down or respond to commands in your home doesn't mean they can do the same in public spaces. You will be introduced to more real-life situations with actual distractions you will come across everyday.
  • New obedience skills will be introduced:
    • Go to your place and settle command
    • Heeling while Loose Leash Walking
    • Doorway Manners

Polite Pup 2

Class Topics:

  • This class will focus on the AKC Canine Good Citizen test items.
  • This test is an expert-made training program designed to help you and your dog be the best you can be together.
  • The Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners.
  • The official test will be on the final day of class. Even if you or your dog are not ready to take the test officially, you can still take it to see where you will need extra practice!

Let's Go For a Walk!

Course Duration: 4 classes

  • This skill takes time and practice to master. This class is set up to take more than once if you desire. The training will be adjusted to your skill level.

Age: 8+ weeks

Class Topics:

  • Loose leash walking is one of the tougest obedience skills to master. Walking a dog without leash manners is no fun! Sadly, most dog owners give up on teaching this because they don't know how to handle outside distractions or how to motivate their dog to stay focused. Because of this, dog owners don't want to walk their dogs and now they have a wild, stressed, energy-filled pup on their hands.
  • Work on loose leash walking with few to many distractions, depending on the dogs ability.

AKC Trick Dog

Cost: $175

Class Topics:

  • Learn, refine and perform tricks and have them evaluated by an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator. Dogs perform individual tricks to earn a Trick Dog title. Tricks are categorized by their level of difficulty, and the higher the level of competition, the more difficult the tricks that your dog will need to perform.
  • During any time of each class, if you feel you and your dog are ready, you can be evaluated for a title! If you pass, then you can immediately start training for the next title level!
  • There will be 2 evaluators in this class helping you to learn your dogs tricks to earn your titles.

Rally Obedience

Cost: $175

Requirements:

  • For Rally beginners with no experience, and for dogs with some Rally experience.
  • Bow Wow Basics or similar, or prove your dog has the skills to take this class.

Class Topics:

  • Learn the fun sport of Rally obedience, learn to execute Rally signs and what is involved in compitition. You and your dog will learn to navigate a course together, side-by-side, at your own brisk pace. You move him through a course with signs where he performs different exercises. The courses are designed by the Rally judge (10-20 signs per course, depending on the class level) that include various turns and commands such as sit, down, stay, etc.

Drop In Class

Reactive Rover Prep

Cost: $40

Start Dates: Monday, January 6th at 6:45pm

Class Date: 1/6

Attendance: 1 hour class

Course Duration: 1 class

Age: 6+ months

Requirements:

  • Head halter (ex: Gentle Leader, Halti, or Snoot Loop) OR Front-clip harness (ex: Easy Walk, Sensible, Freedom)
  • Sturdy, unfrayed leashes and collars
  • Each dog/handler team will have a barricaded work station so the dogs will not be able to see each other. You will come out one at a time to work on your dog's reactivity.
  • Safety will be the number one priority!

Class Topics:

  • Learn the behaviors to help prep you for the Reactive Rover class. Your dog must perform the following behaviors in order to take the Reactive Rover class:
    • Watch Me
    • Leave It
    • Touch
    • Find It
  • If they need to learn these behaviors you must also register for this prep class as they will not be taught during the Reactive Rover class (4 weeks).

Reactive Rover

  • This class is not for dog-human aggression. If your dog has had a history of biting people, or has bitten other dogs that resulted in a vet visit, we recommend our private sessions.
  • Safety will be the number one priority!

Class Topics:

  • You and your dog must have the prep class behaviors learned in order to take this class. If your dog cannot perform those behaviors you must sign up for the Reactive Rover Prep class.
  • This is a class for reactive and aggressive dogs (with no bite history)
  • Humans and dogs will learn in a safe environment. Learn how to reduce your dogs reactivity and how to distract or redirect them when in the presence of another dog or scary situation. These skills will help the dog be able to function and behave in society around what stresses them.
  • This class will help reduce your dogs reactivity and regain focus and control of your dog
  • Positive reinforcement methods will help reduce your dogs anxiety in these tough situations.
  • Dogs will not be allowed to be within reach of other dogs or humans without the use of a muzzle.
  • Each student will be required to use a barrier to reduce the visual stimulations of other dogs. These will be provided for you.
  • Dogs will be required to wear a head halter or a front clip harness so you will have more control of your dogs in class.

Beyond Obedience

Intro to Agility Foundations I

  • This class will introduce you to the sport of agility. Want to get your dog started with the goal of competition? We can get you started! Want to learn agility just for fun? This class will be perfect for you! This foundation class will introduce you to the obstacles you will see in a standard agility course. If you wish to continue onto competition training then we can get you set up to continue with Kara Mackenzie over at FASTDoggie. We are working with Kara to help introduce new dogs to the wonderful sport of Agility!
  • Our classes at Mountain Paws will introduce you to the agility obstacles and some basic handling. Once you have mastered that, contact Kara at FASTDoggie and get on a list for one of her competition classes! If you are having fun at Mountain Paws and don't wish to compete, then feel free to stick around and we can keep having fun! Thats the whole point of this class, FUN!

  • This class is for those who have experience in agility with their dog. This is an ongoing class with a little more flexibility in the schedule. These classes are focused on building confidence and enhancing the skills of the obstacles and handling but most of all FUN! We are a smaller facility so we do not offer competition classes. Weave Pole Training

Class Topics:

  • The weave poles can be the hardest obstacle to master in the sport of agility. That's why there is a class focusing specifically on the weaves. We will train the 2x2 method and provide info for you to build your own weave poles at home! You may also purchase a set from us.

Class Topics:

  • Nosework is easily the hottest new dog sport around and is growing in popularity! It's fun for humans & dogs and it's good for building confidence and focus in dogs that have issues like shyness, reactivity, aggression, or a simple lack of confidence. Any dog can participate; from puppies to very old or retired dogs. In a matter of weeks, you'll see your dog confidently ignoring distractions and focusing on the target scent. In this class, you will learn about the basic concepts in searching for odor, proper use of equipment, how to handle odor, how to make and place hides, and how to teach your dog the importance of odor obedience. You will also learn how to make the search for scent extremely important to your dog.

Beginner NoseWork II

Class Topics:

  • Continue your NoseWork journey by teaching your dog to recognize additional odors and how to find them in more difficult locations. We also introduce locating odor outdoors and on vehicles and work on leash handling skills. You will also learn more about how odor “behaves”, what to look for in different environmental conditions, and how dogs are able to distinguish one odor from another. Through all of this, you and your dog will grow closer as a working team, bonding as you experience success in this fun activity.

Intermediate NoseWork

Cost: $205

Start Date: Wednesday, December 11th at 6:45pm

Class Dates: 12/11, 12/18, 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29

Class Topics:

  • In this class we will introduce additional odors and test your skills as a team by presenting challenging situations with distractions, buried hides, and working in different locations. You will grow together as you work through odor puzzles. We will continue to work on leash handling skills so you will learn when to use different types and lengths of leashes. For those who are interested in trying out NoseWork competitions, we will prepare you for the excitement of trials. And we will continue to learn about how you and your dog, as individuals, approach searching for odor. As always, we grow our knowledge of the biology of canine odor recognition and environmental influences on the search.

NoseWork Drop In

Class Topics:

  • This drop-in class is ideal for nosework teams just starting to learn odor identification, those who are getting ready to try their hand at trialing, and those who have started trialing at the beginning levels. The class is designed to be flexible to meet team where they are at in their scent work journey. Students will learn about how dogs find odor, how odor works, and how they can most effectively support their canine partners. Classes are held indoors, outdoors, and occasionally at various locations throughout the community.

  • Advanced NoseWork is designed for teams who are preparing to compete or are actively competing in trials. We replicate, as much as possible, what you will encounter in a trial, discuss how to approach competitive situations, review what you may have experienced in a trial and apply experiences to our classroom exercises. We celebrate successes along the way - whether those are new things learned in class or at a trial, successful searches and qualifying at a competition, or titles and placements.

Indoor Dog Park

  • Dogs must not have a history of aggression, reactivity or fearful behavior toward other dogs or humans.

Description:

  • Our Indoor Dog Park is for safe and happy play and you don't have to worry about the weather! You will be responsible for your own dog, so you will need to step in and give your dog a break if your dog begins to play too rough or shows signs of becoming stressed out. Come and join the fun!!!

Brew Dog Club

Cost: $25

Class Topics:

  • This is a more advanced class and also a fun class! Learn the skills to get your dog to remain calm, focus on you and your commands and how to work on basic manners while at a public location. Colorado Springs is a very dog friendly place and bringing your dog to a brewery, restaurant or coffee shop can be a great activity for you and your dogs. Many people don't want to bing their dog because of wild behavior and lack of understanding of what to do in these distracting environments.
