Board gaming on Friday nights in Sherman Oaks
Board gaming on Friday nights in Sherman Oaks
Friday Night Board Gaming (formerly Friday Night Dice) is a meetup for everyone who likes board games. And if you’re new to board games, our friendly gamers are happy to teach you how to play. We play basic European board games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket To Ride, etc., and more advanced games like Suburbia, Power Grid, Terraforming Mars, and Railways of the World. Also war games & card games. We bring lots of games, but you’re free to bring your own! We used to game at LASFS (Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society) in Van Nuys. However, as that organization sold its building we have moved to Paper Hero's and Games, a game store in Sherman Oaks, and we continue to meet every Friday late afternoon and evening. We share the gaming space with a large group of Magic the Gathering players but we easily have room for between 10 to 20 board gamers who usually show up for board games. Most of these gamers are regulars who just don't bother to RSVP as this is a store open to all comers and requiring a Yes RSVP is not feasible as we are often joined by store customers who see what we are doing and ask to join in - and we always say YES! (As most gamers do not bother to RSVP, quite often our home page will just show me as the only attendee even though we may have almost 2 dozen gamers at our tables. So, if the home page shows just 1 person attending, pay no attention to that as we may very well have full house of gamers.) So come on down and get your gaming fix this Friday at the friendly and comfortable game store. We have beginners and advanced gamers, so everyone is welcome.

Left leaning politics are a focus. I know that having Chinese food every week may be boring to some people, but here are the reasons why I'm keeping this location: * Free parking * Reasonably priced * Separate checks * A really nice conference room * Great location * More new people from other parts of the city * 10 minutes from Brentwood in the middle of the day. The salads are good, or come and just have tea if you don't want Chinese food. Check out menu at [https://order.pfchangs.com](https://order.pfchangs.com/)\|

During During spring and milder weather this hour is reserved for private party . Feel free to check with me offseason if you don't mind the Heat. Also if there is no group the fee for a private hour is $40. Thanks for your understanding. What makes this workout different? For most players, it is the ability to master net play as well as enhancin g the ground-strokes to create 'all-court' game, coverage, control, balance, finesse, flexibility, ... altogether low-impact (on the joints) effective play. Here is a little information on my background. I have been coaching tennis for well over two decades. When the 'tennis powers that be' decided to turn our graceful, exciting sport into a boring baseline slug fest, tossing out the classic backhand with the bathwater, I resisted and have trained countless players in the traditional fundamentals of tennis which lead to effortless all-court coverage, accuracy, variety, finesse and power... About 50% of our focus over the decades has been on the 'Inner Game' which creates the perfect balance to our workouts. Side benefits for those who follow my guidance are greatly decreased incidence of tennis related injuries. I am a 'player-coach', and have never experienced more than an occasional minor strain that clears up within minutes to hours usually, but always fewer than 48 hours. You can check the >More >Discussions >Message Board for a couple of threads on things like tendonitis plus an excellent find on the importance of good body chemistry called 'Be Healthy Now'. Check this out! Table of contents for the "Who was teaching what where when" upcoming tennis history, in which I am said to be featured in chapter 1 and chapter 4. https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/8665ae_77f1c103ab7a40e2a5c0c43dd44198cc.pdf Final draft copies were distributed to tennis officials of the USTA and other tennis governing bodies at the recent US Open by its historian author. New publication date for all to see is April 2020. Anyone that attends my workouts with an open mind, ready to possibly look at their game from a slightly different perspective is usually pleasantly surprised. I think you will be as well! For future reference please contact me directly and early if you are interested in this event. This Meetup has contingencies, for instance it may not happen if the workout that precedes it isn't happening, and it probably will not happen if there is only one confirmation unless we convert it to 'Your private hour. (40$/hour, however, there is a non-meetup member and friend who attends most weeks and this hour is listed on our sister Meetup, thus a very good chance that this will be a group as the maximum is just four, really three because MU includes me in the count.) If you don't have my phone number, you may be in touch with me through Meetup message or email. I only exchange phone numbers via email. Please give me minimum 24 hour notice if you are interested. Skill level is usually 3.5 plus or minus... Thanks for checking!'

Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
**DESCRIPTION:** This adventurous out-and-back trek whisks you from Placerita Canyon's peaceful oak groves into the wild heart of the Angeles National Forest, with Camp Nine—a remote wildland firefighting station perched on Bear Divide—as your prize. Or stop at May Peak for a shorter intermediate hike if you like (see details below). You'll ease into things with a friendly stroll along the Canyon Trail before Los Pinetos Trail decides to get serious. Mile three is where this hike flexes its muscles with a heart pumping 700-foot climb that'll have you questioning your life choices—at least until the trail mercifully ducks under a canopy of shady oaks as you approach Wilson Saddle. From the saddle, fire road 3N17 leads you onward to Camp Nine, where you've earned every bite of that summit sandwich before turning around and heading home. This roughly 12-mile round-tripper delivers big rewards: sweeping mountain panoramas, dramatic landscape shifts from sunbaked chaparral to cool forest corridors, and a peek at the backcountry infrastructure that keeps these mountains from going up in smoke. Just know what you're signing up for—over 1,100 feet of elevation gain in four miles, rocky and occasionally cranky trail conditions, and exposed stretches that laugh at your sunscreen. **DETAILS:** Hike leader volunteer(s): Tim R. * Meet: 19798 Placerita Canyon Rd, at 6:45 am, departure at 7:00 am sharp (May 16). * Distance: Approximately 9.6/11.7 miles. * Elevation gain: Approximately 2,333/2,470 feet. * Time: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break. * Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition. * Dogs: Dogs are allowed. * Restrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead. * Adventure Pass: Required. **IMPORTANT NOTES:** We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There may be stream crossings, exposures, bugs or other warnings. As always, people may slip and fall, encounter poison oak, snakes, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. **ESSENTIAL GEAR:** Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers are recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. Hat and sunscreen. **[The Ten Essentials of Hiking (link)](https://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/)** **THIS HIKE RANKING: Level 4, Intermediate** *(see chart below).* Please only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. May 17, 2026 - Mission Point Granada Hills Hike (Advanced Hikers Only)
May 17, 2026 - Mission Point Granada Hills Hike (Advanced Hikers Only)
My organizers and I will be leading a hike to Mission Point, via the Dr. Mario De Campos trail (Neon way)in the Granada Hills area (*San Fernando Valley*.) This out and back hike is approximately 4.5 miles long. It is a challenging route and is intended for advanced hikers due to the 1,227 foot elevation gain. We do not recommend beginning or unexperienced hikers attending this hike. The first two miles are quite steep. We will be limiting the amount of attendees so my team and I can safely keep track of the hikers and not overcrowd the trail. We will hike as a group and leave no one behind. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message. When parking, do not leave any valuables or anything in plain site in your vehicle. Unfortunately, there has been car burglaries in the area. If you want more information on this hike please visit https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mission-point-via-de-campos-trail HIKE RATING SCALE - (This hike is challenging ) Rating a hike is subjective, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Falls Creek - HWD Loop & Break at the HWD Ranch West
Falls Creek - HWD Loop & Break at the HWD Ranch West
We begin in the prestigious gated neighborhood of the **Indian Springs Estates** in Chatsworth. From there we head north and enter ***Indian Springs Open Space***, set within the backdrop of surrounding open and untouched mountains, ravines and hillsides. After a little more trekking we will find ourselves in ***Rocky Peak Park***. This extraordinary property forms the most critical wildlife habitat linkage between the *Simi Hills* and the *Santa Susana Mountains*. Spectacular sandstone boulders, outcroppings, oak savannahs, and perennial water sources provide a diverse habitat for birds, mammals, and reptiles. We'll be taking our snack break atop a hill at the ***HWD Ranch West*** surrounded by old farm and ranching equipment (see featured photo) with commanding views. **HISTORICAL NOTES** During our hike we'll be passing by land that was once the homesteaded property (Fern Ann Falls) of the first American family to settle in the San Fernando Valley: Neils and Ann Johnson. They moved to the property in 1874 and homestead papers were filed in 1899. Almost 25 years ago while exploring the homesteaded area I came across some of the "trails" we'll be using. Back then they were just overgrown paths left over by human activity during a bygone era. My old "secret trails" are now established LA County trails; hikers, bikers and equestrians are permitted through the estate gates. Hike is about 7 miles with 1,700 feet total ascent and rated ***MEDIUM+.*** [See the HWD Hike Rating Guide](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) **DIRECTIONS** From the Santa Susana Pass Rd -- between Rocky Peak Rd and Topanga Canyon Blvd -- turn north on Iverson Rd. Head toward the address given and proceed toward the 118 Fwy overpass and park on street outside of gates. We meet just outside the gates. **IMPORTANT** *Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.* *Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.* *Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.* *The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders, guides, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike, or any other event organized by this group, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks, dangers and hazards, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.*

Los Angeles - Canyon Rescue Course (ACE-L4) 'Intensive'
**CANYON RESCUE COURSE (ACE-L4) by Uber Adventures** **To register for this class, please visit our website:** [Upcoming Events – Uber Adventures](https://uberadventures.net/events/) This course is not only a great time to up your recreational canyoneering skills to an admirable level, but it presents the remaining skills for Certification as a Professional Canyon Guide (ACE-L5) with ACE (Association for Canyoneering Education)! Check out the benefits of ACE certification .. they're pretty dang awesome: http://ACEcanyoneering.com). Train Hard, Plan Well, Be Safe ... but accident's still happen. This Canyon Rescue Course (ACE-L4) by Uber Adventures teaches the skills necessary to perform immediate, in-canyon self-rescues, partner rescues, and how to assist with group emergencies ... all with your groups' normal rack-and-pack (the minimal gear you should carry on your harnesses and in your packs.) Boost your confidence and fill your mental toolbox with skills to handle technical emergencies. This course not only teaches you the skills and methods necessary to execute a variety of rescue procedures, but it provides the impetus for critical thinking through an emergency. How would you help a canyoneer stuck on a rope? How would you help an unconscious canyoneer stuck on a rope? How quickly could you figure out how to convert a static block to a lowering system? Could you haul a rappeller back to the top of a drop by yourself? Have you ever been in a canyon, assessing a fictional problem and felt helpless? Are your responsibilities in a canyoneering event greater because you're the leader/organizer? Would you like to be a more valuable team member? This course is vital for not only canyoneering leaders, but also for conscientious recreational canyoneers who value their own safety and the safety of their party. With the technical skills presented in this course, you could prevent the need for calling in an expensive Search and Rescue team, avoid putting rescuers at risk, avoid spending the night in a canyon, and continue a canyon descent with a non-critically injured teammate. **SKILLS:** • Advanced Friction Options • Knots, Rope Grabs & Progress Capture Methods • Anchors, Rigging & Friction Dynamics for Rescue • Mechanical Advantage and Haul Systems • Converting Static Rigging to Haul or Lower • Assisted Rappel & Tandem Rappel Techniques • Hero Rescue, Balancier Lift • Rappelling on a Tensioned Rope • Guide Ropes, Tag Lines, Belays • Cut-and-Lower Procedures • Special Ascending Techniques for Rescue • Pick-Off Procedures Scenario (X2) • Considerations for musculoskeletal injuries **PREREQUISITES:** Since this course builds upon the skills and techniques presented in our Technical Canyoneering Course (ACE-L1), our Advanced Canyoneering Course (ACE-L2), AND our Canyon Leader Course (ACE-L3), we recommend that you've either taken two or three of those courses or have significant relevant personal experience before taking this class (please inquire if you're unsure if this is the correct course for your current skill set). **INSTRUCTION:** UBER Adventures is America’s premier Canyoneering Instruction, Events and Community!
