Board gaming on Friday nights in Sherman Oaks
Board gaming on Friday nights in Sherman Oaks
Friday Night Board Gaming (formerly Friday Night Dice) is a meetup for everyone who likes board games. And if you’re new to board games, our friendly gamers are happy to teach you how to play. We play basic European board games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket To Ride, etc., and more advanced games like Suburbia, Power Grid, Terraforming Mars, and Railways of the World. Also war games & card games. We bring lots of games, but you’re free to bring your own! We used to game at LASFS (Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society) in Van Nuys. However, as that organization sold its building we have moved to Paper Hero's and Games, a game store in Sherman Oaks, and we continue to meet every Friday late afternoon and evening. We share the gaming space with a large group of Magic the Gathering players but we easily have room for between 10 to 20 board gamers who usually show up for board games. Most of these gamers are regulars who just don't bother to RSVP as this is a store open to all comers and requiring a Yes RSVP is not feasible as we are often joined by store customers who see what we are doing and ask to join in - and we always say YES! (As most gamers do not bother to RSVP, quite often our home page will just show me as the only attendee even though we may have almost 2 dozen gamers at our tables. So, if the home page shows just 1 person attending, pay no attention to that as we may very well have full house of gamers.) So come on down and get your gaming fix this Friday at the friendly and comfortable game store. We have beginners and advanced gamers, so everyone is welcome.

Left leaning politics are a focus. I know that having Chinese food every week may be boring to some people, but here are the reasons why I'm keeping this location: * Free parking * Reasonably priced * Separate checks * A really nice conference room * Great location * More new people from other parts of the city * 10 minutes from Brentwood in the middle of the day. The salads are good, or come and just have tea if you don't want Chinese food. Check out menu at [https://order.pfchangs.com](https://order.pfchangs.com/)\|

FRIDAY MORNING HIKE - SERRANIA PARK in WOODLAND HILLS 🌳🌻🌿
**Info for this hike: The Serrania Ridge Trail** can be completed in 1.5 - 2 hours, which makes it a good choice for a moderate / beginner’s hike or weekday adventure. The trail offers beautiful views across the park and is a good workout. Some sections are narrow, steep, and rocky. It's recommended to wear shoes with good grip. Both may have leaders.** **Doggies with leashes are always welcome.** **Please bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots.** **LOCATION: Serrania Park 20726 Wells Dr., Woodland Hills, CA 91364** **DIRECTIONS**: Take the 101 Freeway to De Soto Ave. Go South. Continue straight onto Serrania Ave. Continue onto Wells Dr. **CHIPPING IN:** Our group has been around for a while. This is a good sign because there must be a good reason that we are going strong. You may not know that it costs to belong to MEETUP. They keep raising the dues. They know that we do not have a choice. If you feel that you would like to share the dues, please feel free to contribute. **It is not mandatory, it is 100% voluntary**. If you have any questions please feel free to call me @ 818-999-1257 or 818-238-7126. **IMPORTANT -** **PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY**: *The Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders or guides. Ten+ Tennis Tune-Up 3.5* NTRP
Ten+ Tennis Tune-Up 3.5* NTRP
During During spring and milder weather this hour is reserved for private party . Feel free to check with me offseason if you don't mind the Heat. Also if there is no group the fee for a private hour is $40. Thanks for your understanding. What makes this workout different? For most players, it is the ability to master net play as well as enhancin g the ground-strokes to create 'all-court' game, coverage, control, balance, finesse, flexibility, ... altogether low-impact (on the joints) effective play. Here is a little information on my background. I have been coaching tennis for well over two decades. When the 'tennis powers that be' decided to turn our graceful, exciting sport into a boring baseline slug fest, tossing out the classic backhand with the bathwater, I resisted and have trained countless players in the traditional fundamentals of tennis which lead to effortless all-court coverage, accuracy, variety, finesse and power... About 50% of our focus over the decades has been on the 'Inner Game' which creates the perfect balance to our workouts. Side benefits for those who follow my guidance are greatly decreased incidence of tennis related injuries. I am a 'player-coach', and have never experienced more than an occasional minor strain that clears up within minutes to hours usually, but always fewer than 48 hours. You can check the >More >Discussions >Message Board for a couple of threads on things like tendonitis plus an excellent find on the importance of good body chemistry called 'Be Healthy Now'. Check this out! Table of contents for the "Who was teaching what where when" upcoming tennis history, in which I am said to be featured in chapter 1 and chapter 4. https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/8665ae_77f1c103ab7a40e2a5c0c43dd44198cc.pdf Final draft copies were distributed to tennis officials of the USTA and other tennis governing bodies at the recent US Open by its historian author. New publication date for all to see is April 2020. Anyone that attends my workouts with an open mind, ready to possibly look at their game from a slightly different perspective is usually pleasantly surprised. I think you will be as well! For future reference please contact me directly and early if you are interested in this event. This Meetup has contingencies, for instance it may not happen if the workout that precedes it isn't happening, and it probably will not happen if there is only one confirmation unless we convert it to 'Your private hour. (40$/hour, however, there is a non-meetup member and friend who attends most weeks and this hour is listed on our sister Meetup, thus a very good chance that this will be a group as the maximum is just four, really three because MU includes me in the count.) If you don't have my phone number, you may be in touch with me through Meetup message or email. I only exchange phone numbers via email. Please give me minimum 24 hour notice if you are interested. Skill level is usually 3.5 plus or minus... Thanks for checking!'

CBS Film Series presents "Sheitel"
CBS Film Series presents "Sheitel"
In Europe during the Middle Ages Christian women covered their hair. During the 16th and 17th centuries wigs were worn by royalty, and associated with high status and high fashion. In the 60s and 70s the wig enjoyed a revival thanks in part to a large fashionista market. Filmed in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Canada and Jerusalem, Sheitel traces the historical and spiritual roots of hair covering for married women in Judaism, its evolving interpretations, and its misconceptions. Scenes from Jerusalem reveal how head coverings act as markers of faith and empowerment not only for Jewish, but Christian and Muslim women as well. Additionally, the film offers a rare look into the global wig industry. Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
**DESCRIPTION:** This adventurous out-and-back trek whisks you from Placerita Canyon's peaceful oak groves into the wild heart of the Angeles National Forest, with Camp Nine—a remote wildland firefighting station perched on Bear Divide—as your prize. Or stop at May Peak for a shorter intermediate hike if you like (see details below). You'll ease into things with a friendly stroll along the Canyon Trail before Los Pinetos Trail decides to get serious. Mile three is where this hike flexes its muscles with a heart pumping 700-foot climb that'll have you questioning your life choices—at least until the trail mercifully ducks under a canopy of shady oaks as you approach Wilson Saddle. From the saddle, fire road 3N17 leads you onward to Camp Nine, where you've earned every bite of that summit sandwich before turning around and heading home. This roughly 12-mile round-tripper delivers big rewards: sweeping mountain panoramas, dramatic landscape shifts from sunbaked chaparral to cool forest corridors, and a peek at the backcountry infrastructure that keeps these mountains from going up in smoke. Just know what you're signing up for—over 1,100 feet of elevation gain in four miles, rocky and occasionally cranky trail conditions, and exposed stretches that laugh at your sunscreen. **DETAILS:** Hike leader volunteer(s): Tim R. * Meet: 19798 Placerita Canyon Rd, at 6:45 am, departure at 7:00 am sharp (May 16). * Distance: Approximately 9.6/11.7 miles. * Elevation gain: Approximately 2,333/2,470 feet. * Time: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break. * Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition. * Dogs: Dogs are allowed. * Restrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead. * Adventure Pass: Required. **IMPORTANT NOTES:** We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There may be stream crossings, exposures, bugs or other warnings. As always, people may slip and fall, encounter poison oak, snakes, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. **ESSENTIAL GEAR:** Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers are recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. Hat and sunscreen. **[The Ten Essentials of Hiking (link)](https://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/)** **THIS HIKE RANKING: Level 4, Intermediate** *(see chart below).* Please only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability.
