Re: Vintage MRE dessert or am I losing it?
Thanks for making me feel old, dirtbag!
lol--- actually we only ate MCIs for a little while before my national guard unit got MREs and even woodland camouflage pattern BDUs! Anyway, I do recall the chocolate disks and they were good but not the same as what I'm thinking of. This was a thick fudge covered oreo-type cookie, but now that I recall, no creme filling. Thanks for the help though.

Hell, I grew up eating Korean war era C-Rats, courtesy of the local Army/ Air force base...(Camp Cook/Vandenberg AFB)rationtin440 wrote:Thanks for making me feel old, dirtbag!lol---
I guess that makes me older! ( I just turned 63 ! )
I had more than enough MCI's during my two ' All Expenses Paid ' tours of Viet Nam, and a few of the first LURPS (Nasty) .
I got out in '78, so I missed the early MRE's...
I guess thats why I didn't recognize what you were describing.

Seems like I had those once too but they did come out of an MRE..Reminded me of a small Chocolate Moon Pie...Here you will feel better about your age I got out in 76

I was in from '68 to '78.
The military in peacetime sucks... At least when there's a war going on, they leave you alone.
and 'Politically Correct' bullsh*t sure didn't help!

I think those were called "Gorilla Cookies" my 1SG used to bitch about them! Way before my time.
Re: Vintage MRE dessert or am I losing it?
The only thing I can remember from MRE's was the chocolate covered cookie or the chocolate covered fudge brownie. I never did see the candy disks or bars and I came in '89, so I might have been getting the tail end leftovers or the newer stuff. The dessert item your refering to might have been in the early MRE's around 1979-80 or possibly the early 80's when they were transitioning to MRE from MCI's. I do have two cases from those time periods and it would be interesting to find a MRE that had that. Might even still be good....

Perhaps you search for those ones:rationtin440 wrote:...I recall, in the early MREs, a dessert item which was basically a large diameter oreo-type cookie, covered with a nice waxy melt resistant chocolate fudge...
Also see here:

Those COOKIES, CHOCOLATE COVERED were in round shape in early MREs (about 1981 until 1985); later they had a square shape (see the article from Name_not_found above).
Or see here for the CHOCOLATE DISK:
