Building the
Ohio River Valley

Mulzer Crushed Stone, located in Tell City, touches the lives of millions of people daily. Mulzer supplies the limestone, sand, and gravel for international airport runways, roads, interstate highways, dams, and chemical operations at utilities. Sixty years ago three Spencer County brothers: Arnold, Roland, and Edgar Mulzer started a small construction company that was to become Mulzer Crushed Stone. Humbly, “they weren’t quite ditch diggers; they finished up for ditch diggers,” building box culverts alongside newly constructed or upgraded roads throughout Indiana.

Mulzer Crushed Stone Cape Sandy Quarry CapEx Project

Tell City, Indiana, August 15, 2024 – Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc., a CRH company, announced plans to begin construction on a phased expansion project at its largest limestone quarry in Leavenworth, Indiana. The project will modernize two processing plants and construct a new entry road, wash plant, support facilities and river barge loadout system. The multi-year project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.

Once completed, aggregate production operations will be transformed at the company’s flagship location. These improvements will also result in a reduction of carbon emissions annually, reduced process waste and enhanced safety through traffic flow efficiencies.

“This investment represents our commitment to safety, operational excellence and environmental stewardship. The quarry transformation will enable us to provide our valued customers with a wider range of custom aggregate products and solutions across a five-state region. Furthermore, this will strengthen our position as the region’s leading supplier of building materials,” said Ken Mulzer, Jr., President of Mulzer Crushed Stone, Inc.

Celebrating Earth Day in the Cape Sandy Pollinator Habitat

Several of our employees and their families marked Earth Day by spending a few hours in the Cape Sandy Quarry Pollinator Habitat last Saturday, working together to get the garden ready for the growing season.  The volunteers, led by Sustainability Manager Wenona Fosselman, weeded, planted, spread mulch, and shared many laughs in the process!

Did You Know?  The Cape Sandy Quarry Pollinator Habitat Garden was started last summer and contains Indiana native plants that attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.  Why are Pollinator Habitat Gardens so important to our world?  Well, according to the Indiana Native Plant Society, adding even a few native plants to your landscaping or garden can:

add to the resources that support local wildlife;
build landscape corridors in our communities to counter habitat fragmentation;
help storm water percolate safely into the soil rather than running superheated into rivers and streams;
garden more sustainably, with less watering and fertilizing;
create growing spaces that honor your state’s rich natural heritage;
make gardening easier, because native plants will tolerate & thrive in your plant hardiness zone.

If you’re interested in learning more about plants that are native to your state, visit the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder and search by zip code.
