God did not approve of this enormous project and their hubris, so to stop their work he confounded their languages so that they could no longer understand each other, which caused construction to grind to a halt due to the lack of communication between workers speaking different languages. The unfinished tower was then called Babel, meaning confusion.

In the biblical times in the kingdom of Nimrod, people of Shinar (Babylonia) planned to build a huge tower that would reach heaven. They began building the tower. It was an enormous enterprise, so it took a long time and lot of cooperation. But God did not like it. He said that if they are doing this now, there will be nothing to stop them from doing as they wish later. He decided to stop this. The people were able to do this because they spoke the same language. So God confused their language so that no one understood each other. Suddenly, each of the men was speaking different language. They couldn't understand each other and they couldn't tell each other what they wanted or needed. It was impossible for the workers to communicate. Hence they had to stop working on the tower. Thus the lack of communication ended the huge enterprise. The tower was called Babel ... meaning Confusion. 2
