Forever vigilant

Nick Bourbeau
The sun lazily rose with into a beautiful scarlet sky that slowly turned blue. It was April, Spring was just starting to come in, snow had been melting, animals awakening, and trees coming to life once more. The peace and serenity was instantly broken with the ear shattering sound of an alarm clock. Well it is Monday and you know what that means, another week of work or school, and we will be holding a contest to score some tickets this morning but first here's Toby Keith. a man for a popular radio station said. Then the song, I Love This Bar, by Toby Keith filled the small room. Darrell reached for the source of this noise obstructing his sleep. five more minutes, come on. He said just as he tapped the snooze button on the top of his old radio clock. Just as he began dozing back to sleep however, Darrell R. Hines! you are already running late! I swear I am going to remove the snooze button off of that accursed thing! You were supposed to get up half an hour ago! a woman screamed from down the stairs. thirty minutes? There is no way I hit the snooze button six times nice try mom Darrell thought to himself, he raised his head and looked at the clock with one eye half open. Both eye lids flew straight up in shock, It's 7:15?! but I still gotta shower and brush and eat breakfast! Darrell sprang from his bed and ran for the bathroom, he jumped into the shower got out brushed and raced downstairs. good morning. Darrell said to the scornful face of his mother, Your father left for work, it's 8:00, you are officially late! I told you never to use that snooze button! Darrell's mother was beautiful woman even in her mid 30's, with long brown hair, a slender figure, and her tall stature. It's hard not to, this is way to early for a night person like me. whatever you say Darrell, go catch your bus before you actually are late. Have a nice day. her tone had changed like a light switch. Darrell ran out the house, just barely catching the bus. well someone decided to sleep in today didn't we? the elderly bus driver nagged. yeah I already got this talk with my mom won't happen again. Darrell replied. fine take your seat. Darrell had often wondered why his school bus was the only one he knew of that had a seating chart on their bus. But he never wondered enough to actually bring it up in conversation, so he went on undisturbed to his seat. morning Darrell, slept in again didn't you? Kathrine teased. Yes it's what I do of course Darrell let out a chuckle, a small natural one. if it's any comfort I did too Kathrine giggled. Darrell smiled and replied yeah it's hard not too, I just noticed that is a really nice shirt. Katherine looked down, oh thank you it's ruby, my favorite color. Darrell smiled, suddenly the bus hit a pot hole disheveling the entire left side of passengers. And Darrell found his head laying upon Kathrine's lap, whoa Darrell you have to buy me dinner first Katherine laughed hey I can do that Darrell sat up in a heartbeat with a smile. It's just an expression Darrell you know we are just friends, besides I am already in a relationship remember? Darrell's smile had quickly dissolved into a frown, yeah I know, but friends are nice Darrell forced a small smile as the bus stopped in front of the school. All the seniors walked off the bus, all but three: Darrell, Kathrine, and Elroy. These three were all in the community college program, all for different reasons, Kathrine was going for a culinary education, Elroy for criminal justice education, and Darrell for biologist education. it's always so quiet and boring when everyone leaves but us. Kathrine said with a sigh as she leaned on her arm. i know but I enjoy the quiet helps you think you know? Darrell said scooting in closer to her yeah I guess but it's boring. Darrell sighed, yeah I guess you are right. he pulled out a notebook and started looking over his notes. Hey what's that? Katherine leaned to look over his shoulder. oh this? Nothing much we are trying to look into making radiation a type of medicine and I would explain how we change it

from deadly to healthy but I don't have all my notes with me. So basically we are sending small doses at rats and mice to see if it would fix and regenerate there cuts. It worked like a charm and the deeper and more severe the cuts, obviously it isn't a miracle but it actually got the skin to grow back over it allowing it to heal! Darrell took a breath, we are moving on to a cat today, it is very sick and at this point either our radiation heals it, or it dies. Katherine's eyes grew wide, well I hope it'll be okay, poor kitty Katherine began tearing up a bit. You are quite the animal lover huh? Don't worry through our research I am sure that we can cure it's infections, that will at least give it time to get over it's illness. Katherine quickly smiled, but began frowning once more, Elroy is coming over here. Darrell gulped knowing Elroy was headed over, to avoid contact he simply looked down into his book as if he turned invisible. hey Katherine, why do you always sit with this loser? Come on you can do much better. Elroy said laughing in his ghoulish tone. for your information Elroy I happen to really like sitting next to and talking to Darrell he just happens to be my best friend. Katherine said defensively. When Darrell heard this he thought to himself yeah and why does that have to be all we will ever be? his little inner monologue was interrupted when he heard Hey! Loser look up at me when I am insulting you, what are you looking at? Elroy reached down and pulled Darrell's notebook straight out of his hands. oh science junk, hmm I wonder how important this is. with his devilish smile Elroy began tearing out pages of the notebook out, crumpling them, and throwing the pages out the window, oops all your pages are gone Elroy then handed over the empty notebook. honestly what is wrong with you Elroy how old are you? See this is why I never sit near you. Elroy simply shrugged your loss. he got up and moved to his original seat. Darrell why don't you ever stand up to that loser? Darrell had finally picked up his head, it won't matter what I do he'll win. Katherine's brows furrowed but she decided it was best not to say anything, she simply leaned over and hugged him. thanks Katherine okay seniors get off the bus. the old driver said addressing the three of them, I'll be back at eleven to pick you up. the three students got up Elroy first thank god I am finally getting off this infernal thing. then Katherine got up and walked up to the front of the bus, thanks for always driving us. she said with a smile. of course my dear, thank you for always being so pleasant. the old woman driver always seemed to be the kindest to Katherine probably due to that she was always pleasant back, or perhaps it's a girl thing, there really was no way to find out. Darrell finally got up and started walking towards the door. hey I saw what that kid do to you, you can't let that happens, I mean you just lost all your research. oh no it's okay there is an exact duplicate in the lab, but thanks. well be that as it may you really should stick up for yourself sweetie. I'll keep that in mind thanks. Darrell said with a forced smile as he waved and stepped off the bus. He began thinking, did she just call me sweetie? he shivered at the thought, and I know she was just trying to be nice, but I am so sick of hearing that I need to stick up for myself. Darrell walked into the college with his shoulders slumped and his hands in his pockets. He walked into the lab just putting into the back of his head. There you are Mr. Hines we were waiting to start this without you, it's hard to begin without the greatest mind of this team. Darrell looked up, I am sorry it took me so long the bus got stuck in traffic. Let us begin Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones was an older man devoted to science for a long portion of his life, possibly the rest of it even, it explained his thin figure. No muscle development, gray hair and a small scruffy beard. Mr. Hines I told you after spending this long on this project together you can call me Conner. Darrell smirked at him while he put on his lab coat, not until you start calling me master. he laughed but Dr. Conner simply looked at him puzzled, okay just because you are the head of this experiment, doesn't make you above me like that. he said this in an entirely monotone voice. No anger. lighten up Dr. Jones, it was just a joke, trying to lighten the mood you know? okay okay, I just want to be called

Darrell okay? he said trying to appease the good doctor. very well shall we begin then Darrell? certainly Dr. Conner. excellent, the specimen is in the chamber and ready to begin. And it's a good thing our research is this far, that cat is close to death, suppose it used eight of its lives already. he began to chuckle but it sounded forced and flat. hmm Dr. Conner? That wasn't really funny, I mean you are talking about an animal's death. right right sorry I'll start the warm up procedures. Dr. Conner walked towards a wall of monitors. Each showing a different picture, one the cat's heart rate, a thermographic of the cat, a geiger counter, and an x-ray of the cat. Dr. Conner pointed at the screen, you see that? The cat has two fractions in its rib cage, and one on it's left fore paw. That is what we wish to fix. Darrell stared at the monitor for a moment then turned and said, begin the start up. Dr. Conner began typing, okay the system is almost complete locking, now. the sound of the door's magnetic lock scared the cat forcing it to jump off it's pedestal, and flee to a corner in the room, disregarding it's broken limbs. No! The cat can't be moved otherwise it won't work! Dr. Conner yelled as he released the lock only further terrifying the cornered animal. He rushed in hoping to get the cat back on the platform for the experiment. Darrell ran to the control panel and checked all the monitors, started clicking frantically on the keyboard, Dr. Conner there's no way to shut it off! Get out of there! Dr. Conner didn't break his his concentration didn't so much as look up at Darrell, I'll be fine, we only have one chance at this experiment, I gotta get that cat! we haven't studied the effects on humans! How do you know you will be fine? Dr. Conner didn't respond he simply continued chasing the fleeing cat. Then an ominous computer voice began speaking, radiation test one starting in t-10 seconds. Darrell's expression only became more frantic he began full on screaming, Dr. Conner! Get out of there! Now! Dr. Conner paid no attention to Darrell's pleas. Darrell's mind came up with one choice, one response, and before he could think of what he was doing he ran into the test chamber. t-5 seconds. Dr. Conner! 4, 3, 2, 1, firing radiation. Darrell grabbed Dr. Conner's arm just as the computer finished talking. But then everything went black. Bright lights, a curtain, and nurses running through the halls, sound was deafened, numbness everywhere, the smell of medicine and morphine. Darrell moaned as his sense of touch returned, the pain, scorching, searing. Darrell! You're awake! Thank God! a disembodied voice yelled. KathKatherine? Darrell said very meekly. He heard no response only the jolt of a young woman hugging him tight. Ow! Darrell yelled as the searing increased from her touch. Oh! Sorry I'm just so happy you're okay. Katherine began crying tears of joy at the sight of her old friend. Darrell groaned, what happened, last thing I remember I was trying to get Dr. Conner out of- Oh my God! Where is he? Is he okay? Katherine began frowning, he, he didn't make it when we found you two we brought both of you straight to the hospital, and he, died shortly after he got here. I'm so sorry. Darrell looked at her in disbelief, but Katherine's face told him there was truth in what she said, he began choking up, tears filled his eyes. he was my friend, one of the few people I could talk to, how, why? he couldn't speak another word his voice cut out, he began to cry. I know he meant so much to you, I am so sorry. Katherine soon began crying and went to hold him once more. if I had just pulled him out sooner, I could have saved him. his wales and cries grew louder and stronger. there was nothing you could do Darrell, he was just so focused on the experiment, he was always telling me. Katherine's grip on him grew tighter, he began ignoring the searing pain and hugged tight back. His mother ran into the room with tears running like a faucet, you're alright! Darrell. she ran in tears running just as constant and hugged him at the same time as Katherine. Mom! Darrell's tears didn't stop. Then his Father walked in with a smile on his face, i knew you would pull through, welcome back to the land of the living buddy. thanks dad it's good to be back. Darrell's tears began to dry, and he smiled back at his father. Darrell and his family and friend talked for hours, catching up on what had happened, you mean I was out for four days? we were worried you wouldn't wake up, but we kept you on life

support. his mother replied. thank you for that Darrell replied. oh don't thank me, Katherine is the one found you and the late doctor. Darrell frowned at her comment, he would always miss his good friend. Katherine what did you see when you got there? Katherine knew this question was coming, she dreaded having to answer, well I walked in and, you and Dr. Conner were just laying there both your breathing was going really fast, and there was this cat, it simply walked around as if nothing had happened. You mean to tell me it worked? The cat didn't limp at all? Darrell became excited, no it walked perfectly fine, in fact it jumped up a few times. Darrell was amazed that it had worked. That means the radiation healed its broken legs! But then how is it that it fixed the cat's problems and kept it healthy when it nearly killed me and did kill... Darrell trailed off so he didn't provoke any more tears. A nurse walked in quietly, excuse me? I'm sorry but visiting hours are over and he will need to stay the night to ensure his vitals remain constant. Darrell's visitors all stood up with a sigh and frown. They all said their goodbyes and walked out of the room, but then his mother popped her head into the room, Darrell we are holding a funeral for Dr. Conner tomorrow. Darrell frowned, I'll be able to go right? he asked the nurse, she replied, we will talk about it tomorrow, now get some rest. she walked out of the room escorting his mother. Darrell laid there restless, thinking about all that transpired with the biggest question in mind, how did it not harm the cat? Darrell got dressed in his best suit, so I can really go to the funeral? the doctor in the room told him, certainly however we are sending a nurse with you to ensure your vitals remain steady. Darrell smiled whatever it takes, I have to be there, for my friend. the doctor gave his condolences and left the room, the nurse will escort you out soon. Darrell finished buttoning his coat, when a blonde nurse walked in, she was quite beautiful just turned 20 years old, Hi you must be Darrell, I am Holly Austin, and my job is basically make sure you stay alive. she said energetically. well thank you very much Holly Darrell smiled, it isn't really easy for a guy to get over a high dose of radiation is it? Like it keeps coming back? Darrell asked rhetorically. Well that's the thing we don't know, we haven't had many survivors from that amount of radiation. Holly frowned as she said this. Darrell turned around to look out the window at the raindrops bouncing off. this funeral you are attending, who is it for? If it's okay to ask. the nurse wondered out loud. a really good friend of mine he took a long pause, one of my very few friends in fact. Darrell said as a solitary tear rolled down his cheek. Holly walked over and put a hand on his shoulder, you know after this, I could be your friend. Darrell chuckled at her attempt to make him feel better, thanks after this funeral we'll see how it goes. well no sense in being late to it, come on my car is ready. Holly grabbed Darrell's hand and her bag and brought the two to her car. They arrived at the funeral, it began to rain harder now, not to worry, I brought my umbrella. Holly said as she reached under the seat. She pulled out an extravagant black umbrella, it looked as if made of silk, but completely waterproof, oh it looks really nice. Darrell said trying to make light of the situation. He took the umbrella as she handed it to him, but won't you get wet? he asked. oh don't worry about me, I have my spare. she said as she pulled a second umbrella out from under the seat, the handle was made entirely of glass, and the top more waterproof silk. this is my favorite anyways. Holly giggled. Darrell flashed a smile that soon was replaced with a frown, okay, it's time to pay my final respects to my good friend. they exited the vehicle, opening the umbrellas to reveal one last surprise, dangling pieces of gold fabric from all the edges of the umbrella. He began thinking to himself, are you serious? How did she afford umbrellas like this? Holly stepped out of the vehicle playing with one of the dangling fabric pieces just like a young kitten with a piece of yarn, until her eyes eventually reached Darrell, well shall we go? she asked. Darrell closed his eyes, he couldn't answer, he simply walked forward towards the funeral. One single tear rolled down his cheek. Once he entered the small building, he was amazed in that how few of people showed up. Only

his parents and Katherine showed up in fact. This dismayed him further, he could have sworn Dr. Conner had more friends than this, especially considering his parents were only there because of Darrell. His mother turned to the exit, and seeing Darrell she waved and motioned him over to her, you made it, we can lay him down now. Darrell hugged his mother but continued to frown, why is it we are the only ones here? Where are all his friends and family? his mother's brow furrowed and she tilted her head, Darrell are you feeling alright? He no longer had any family remember? Darrell's memory flashed in his eyes and his mom knew he remembered now. but then why didn't any of his friends show up? I mean he had quite a name for himself in scientific community. His mother took a small step back and turned to face the coffin once more, well we tried to call some up but, they all had passed from experiment failures, all but one, but he said he wouldn't be torn from his work. The last one sounded like an ass. mom of all the places you choose to actually swear here? you're right I'm sorry honey. Darrell walked up slow to the coffin and looked over the side, he saw the body of Dr. Conner, he looked peaceful and if He didn't know any better he could have sworn Dr. Conner was merely sleeping. well, the experiment was a success, even though the cat wasn't on the pedestal, I can't believe you actually wasted your life like that. I needed you man, you were my best friend. Darrell began trailing off, he begun choking up and cried a bit. He went and took a seat, he buried his face in his hands. Holly walked over and covered him in a sweater, it was a silk one mostly for looks versus keeping you warm. A group of men walked in and they all knew it was time, they lifted the coffin and brought it to his grave site. They laid him down into the grave while a priest stood, an umbrella covering him, reading aloud from the bible, but Darrell had too much on his mind to listen and comprehend what he was saying. They began filling the hole and Darrell whispered, goodbye, Conner. Holly hugged Darrell then took a step back one arm behind her back, he turned to look at her, but he soon became dizzy and lightheaded, so much so he fell to the ground and the last thing he saw was, Holly pulling her arm out from behind her back, and hiding something in her pocket. Then, he blacked out. He began opening his eyes to realize he was in the hospital once more, oh you're okay! I was so worried about you. came a voice that he couldn't determine, what happened? Holly soon walked out from the corner of the room, your vitals went haywire, you fainted I had to drive you to hospital in quite a rush. she then hugged him once more. why do you insist on hugging me so much? You don't even know me. Holly shot up with a frown, no but I thought you wanted to be friends. he couldn't recall saying that, but not wanting to upset her decided to agree, okay we can be friends, but let's take it slow okay? Holly smiled from ear to ear, excellent, now you need some rest, goodnight. she walked out and turned off the light. Darrell closed his eyes, he felt exhausted, he began dozing off, reality becoming faint, his senses slowing turning off, suddenly he felt his nose touch something solid. He opened his eyes slowly, his eyelids soon flew open in a flash once he realized his nose just touched the ceiling. He came to the realization that he was floating 10 feet in the air over his bed. He began flailing his limbs in hopes to get down nice and easy, all it caused was he began rolling and flipping uncontrollably. Until he finally fell back down to earth and slammed into his bed. He laid there for what seemed like 20 minutes just staring at himself bewildered on what just happened. Then the nurse barged in, what was that noise? Holly yelled, Darrell was to shocked and afraid to answer, where did he go? she wondered out loud, but turned to see the bathroom door closed with the light on, oh the toilet, I see. she said. But she then walked out the room searching for the doctor. i am right here, how did she not see me? Darrell asked himself. He rushed to the bathroom, his head was in immense pain. He turned on the light and looked in the mirror, he saw no reflection, all he saw were two ruby red eyes. what the- before he could finish his question to himself, a blinding red light destroyed the mirror sitting in front of him, shards of glass flew just beyond his face. He looked down in shock disbelieving what just happened. He held his head for the headache grew in

strength. He looked down but couldn't see himself, he looked at his hands but they weren't there. He began to panic further. The nurse rushed in with the doctor straight behind her, they walked around with the lights on. They found the shards of the mirror scattered on the floor, and the bed slightly bent, and Darrell was missing. you see doctor? Holly muttered at last, it did develop, your prediction was right, he's probably staring at us invisible right now. the doctor turned looking at her, his eyebrow twitched, but that is not possible, he was hit by radiation, this is real life not a comic book! the doctor flung his arms in the air in frustration. Darrell was too curious to ask what they were talking about to insist his presence. see I knew we should have studied him closer. the doctor's brows furrowed in anger, shut it nurse, I knew he would develop something, perhaps a larger muscular physique, or maybe a stronger skeletal system, like the other subjects here, but nothing like this. the nurse rushed over to put his hand over his mouth, shh she told him as she pointed to two red footprints on the floor. Darrell soon realized that she was pointing at him, his feet had been cut open and he was bleeding from the mirror. Holly then tiptoed over to Darrell and said, listen now, if you want to be friends still the offer is open. He looked at Holly's extended hand and thought of her previous conversation, he rejected her hand as the red footprints swiftly made their way towards the door. he's getting away! All guards to level 4 now! Holly yelled over the intercom, she turned, well doctor let's go get your most promising test subject. the doctor began chasing the footprints while Holly headed for the elevator. As he was running, Darrell looked around noticing it was completely different from the hospital he was in, there were rooms all over with people that all seemed to be in high school, but all of them had something strange about them. There were people lifting the beds with a single finger, and people punching concrete walls without flinching, and then there were the simply mutated. what kind of place is this? he asked out loud as he ran. the footprints lead this way come on! and strong sounding voice came from behind him. he's gotta be there. a security guard pointed, stop or we open fire. he yelled as a line of guards formed behind him. The footprints stopped moving, they turned around, i wonder if this is how I do this? for two of the guards this was the last thing they heard, as a blinding light struck them both in the chest, leaving a gaping, smoking hole that went through the corpse. They fell to their knees, the captain of the guard looked down and in a fit of pure rage yelled, open fire! bullets filled the air, the bloody footprints didn't move. Silence soon filled the air. The captain clicked his watch and spoke into it, target turned hostile, is now eliminated. they began walking away. The janitor came in to find and dispose of the body. The elderly man bent over felling the floor with his hands where the footprints stopped, and a single blood drop fell upon his shoulder. He looked up, and another fell into his eye, oh damn, where is that coming from? he saw nothing so continued looking. Darrell looked done upon him, wow that was close, luckiest time for flying to kick in, now if I just- he began controlling his direction and flew for the stairs door. He began sailing down floors past unknowing and unsuspecting guards. now see if I could have traveled like this in the first place, they would have never known where to shoot. what was that Jim? a guard looked at his friend, huh? I didn't say anything get your damn ears checked, idiot. Darrell heard this and thought to himself, okay so they can't see me but can obviously hear me, gotta be careful. he finally reached the ground floor, as he reached for the door to exit the stairs, he fell victim to gravity once more. oh come on. Okay gotta learn how to get control over the whole flying thing. he said mentally as he pushed open the door. He smiled walking towards the facility's exit. But he saw a silhouette holding a young girl with a gun to the head. The crimson footprints slowly moved forward. He soon realized the armed woman was Holly, and in her arm was Katherine. we have been waiting for you Darrell, you know I really tried to be friends, but you killed my friends, those guards well you know what they say an eye for an eye. Holly cocked the hammer on the revolver. Darrell's invisibility faded, and Katherine screamed as he came out of nowhere. Darrell run

this bitch is crazy! This is an actual loaded gun! Holly tightened her grip on Katherine's neck, now now, no need for names, but she is right Darrell, it will be best if you just go back to your room. he took a few steps towards them, but each step made Holly grip tighter and pointed the gun closer to Katherine causing her to scream, louder each time. listen Holly how about that friends offer? Let's just calm down and talk about this okay? no. no talking just go back to your room like a good little test subject. he began walking forward once more. i swear one more step and your little friend's brains will line the wall and my outfit. Darrell stopped mid-step, okay you wouldn't do that, and you do realize I can fire lasers right? Holly's eyes lit up, so you found your potential huh? Well I guess there is no real need for her anymore. the scene played entirely in slow motion, Holly began squeezing the trigger tighter, Darrell ran at her arm stretched out, Katherine's eyes closed, there was a click, and the hammer began falling, He jumped at her, the hammer fell upon the cylinder, there was a spark and a bang. Soon the walls turned ruby red, Katherine's body fell lifeless to the floor. Darrell picked himself up, and came to comprehend the events that just passed. He jumped once more, he tackled Holly knocking away the weapon, he began shaking her hitting her head on the floor, why? Why would you kill my innocent friend like that? Holly smiled and said, she was a distraction, now we don't have to fake 'visiting hours' and study you non-stop. she began laughing. no. I am leaving, but not before, what is it? Ah yes, an eye for an eye. His eyes began to glow red, and a beam of the burning light flashed out and hit Holly's beautiful face. Darrell continued blasting the laser, until it began burning through the tile, then he finally stopped and dropped the headless corpse to the floor. And, with a tear in his eye he whispered, goodbye Katherine. I loved you. and he walked out of the forsaken building. Darrell yelled in his frustration tears rolling endlessly, he slammed the ground cracking the glass walkway beneath him, he watched the blood drip off his fingertips, he stood up with the last of his tears. He jumped high up destroying the remnants of the glass, and he began flying, he wasn't sure where he was or where he was headed. He just kept flying and he realized it got very hot where he was headed, he looked down and saw a sign, welcome to Arizona! it said. He kept going when he noticed a school with smoke coming out of it, he turned invisible and flew straight at the building, he ran in where no one noticed him, he fired two lasers destroying the toilets flooding water everywhere to extinguish the flames. He walked out of the building not bothering to show himself, he was about to take off but he saw a kid whom looked terrified and isolated from the rest. But soon the boy started saying that he wasn't responsible, it was an alien. Darrell rolled his eyes and took off to head west. It took him hours even traveling at his flight speed. He kept flying hoping to clear his head, he saw another sign, Welcome to Florida! it said. He was flying when he noticed what must have been 6 police cars chasing a speeding truck. When suddenly the truck jumped over a raising bridge, once he heard a woman screaming he flew at the truck to save the woman, his phone began ringing causing him to stop only for a moment to check who it was, when he realized it was his mother he answered, but he continued his pursuit of the truck. Darrell sweetie thank god you answered where are you? We called the hospital and you weren't there! Are you alright? his mother almost had a break down over the phone. mom it's alright I'm fine but I'm um different I guess you could say. Also that wasn't a hospital it was a laboratory studying me like some sort of beast! his mother's tone became much more somber and serious, i see, well come home I miss my baby. Darrell rolled his eyes heading home no mom. he hung up and looked to notice he lost the speeding truck. Putting it out of his mind he headed for home. He had a slow descent right in front of his door, and slowly turned the door knob. As soon as the door opened a bullet just barely missed Darrell's head. hello honey, welcome home. his mother stood 20 feet in front of him, a gun pointing straight at him he was to shocked to utter a single word, what no hello for your dear old mother? Good then I'll do the talking. You escaped from our study facility, you weren't supposed to do that and to top it off you killed Holly. Darrell finally found the courage to

speak, but mom she was evil. His mother's face instantly turned into the face of pure rage, that was my sister! she screamed, you little bastard! I knew I should have killed you when the radiation experiment went wrong, then maybe poor little Holly would still be here. Darrell was terrified of his mother's raised voice and facial expression, she killed Katherine though! you think I care? She was nuisance anyways. And I'll do you a favor be ready to go meet her one more time. Darrell turned invisible and ran upstairs and hid in his closet. oh no sweetie, you can't hide from your mommy. she fired three shots one into his bed, one at his desk, and the final into the closet, this one grazed his arm, causing crimson to start dripping from his arm, he fell out of the closet onto the floor, his mother noticed the smell of blood, I've found you, say hello to Katherine for me. there was a bang and a blinding light. Then there was only silence. The smell of blood overwhelming, a smoking hole in the floor, and a larger one in the ceiling. His mother's white gown had turned a terrifying ruby red. She looked down without a word, and noticed a large gaping hole in her torso. She fell to her knees and then fell on her side, blood flowing endlessly onto the floor. Her lifeless body lay there for 15 minutes before Darrell finally stood up and became visible once more. His father then walked into the doorway, what the hell happened here? he yelled. Darrell began explaining what she had said and tried to do to him, and why he had no choice. His father looked down at his deceased wife, and fell to his knees at her side. you are right son, she worked for an organization studying mutations such as yourself, it was called Genetiinnovations. Darrell looked at him inquisitively, well we should be safe now right? His father didn't look away from his wife's dead body, well Darrell, I wouldn't say that, their influences spreads quite a ways. dad please say that you aren't one of them. his father finally stood up, and in one quick fluid motion he revealed an armed pistol and aimed straight at his son's head, I'm afraid I am buddy. Darrell let tears begin flowing out of his eyes, he had lost his best friends and his mother, he didn't know what to do. now now son be a man stop your crying and face your death with courage. he picked his hands up palms facing his father, please don't do this, I don't want to lose you too. his father laughed at his sentiment, after all the murder you have done, no, you don't deserve pity. Darrell only became more frantic, he fell to his knees, closing his eyes. His father laughed, good bye you waste of my life! he screamed excitedly, suddenly he heard a pained shriek come from in front of him, he opened his eyes to see a flash, and the charred corpse of his father. He looked at his hands amazed and terrified. All of the events of today sank in as the adrenaline drained away, he curled into the fetal position, and cried himself to sleep. He awoke from his dream of a utopian society without crime, he knew what he had to do. He flew invisible to a fabric store, and got a custom red suit made to look like a conventional red superhero. The attendant at the store was an elderly woman who asked, oh are you getting ready for Halloween early this year? Darrell simply smiled, yeah I fell behind last year. he smirked paid for his outfit and left. He went to what was once his home. He put on his new costume and put on civilian clothes over it, and stashed his mask into his pocket, he looked in the mirror and told himself, i know first thing I need to do. he flew to the community college, the place that changed his life forever. But he didn't head to the lab, instead he made way towards the criminal justice class. He walked to the door and changed into his superhero persona. After he applied his mask, he opened the door and walked in, the teacher was going over laws to be enforced and the rights suspects did have, but was interrupted by Darrell's appearance. can I help you? And whats with the get up? the teacher almost chuckled. Darrell's only response was, Elroy. hearing his name, Elroy stood up, yeah and who are you? Darrell once again said a single word response, hallway. and walked out. Elroy curious, followed him. Once her entered the hall Elroy closed the door, Darrell I recognized your voice, whats with your stupid clothing? Elroy couldn't help but laugh at the sight. Elroy, you have bullied me since I've known you, prepare to finally get whats coming to you from the spectral ruby! Elroy burst into

laughter to the point where tears came out his eyes, spectral ruby what are you a superhero now? And if you are that is the dumbest name I have ever heard! Elroy's insults were barely heard in between the laughter. Darrell lowered his head, I'm tired of you. Elroy looked at him and walked towards him, you know what? I'm tired of you too. It's time we finally end this. he pulled out a knife. Darrell looked up and stared him in the eyes put up his hands in front of Elroy's chest and said, goodbye. in a flash Elroy laid on the floor, two hand sized smoking holes in his chest. With the last of his strength and energy Elroy lifted his hand, and flipped Darrell off. Darrell simply fired a laser into Elroy's skull, and left toward the lab. A wall of monitors lay before Darrell, all a familiar sight, a flashback begin, he could see the cat, and Dr. Conner running in after it, and trying to stop him and the computers. The very though of this filled him with unspeakable fury, he began smashing the screens hoping to drain the memories of the past. Once all the monitors laid in pieces, he stopped to breathe, no, this isn't what he wouldn't have wanted, I gotta help the world, not destroy it. he looked at a broken piece of one of the screens, and I didn't think it was a stupid name, spectral because I'm invisible, and ruby. he choked up a bit, ruby was her favorite color, it's in her memory. And she would have wanted me to help better mankind. after his monologue he came to his decision, he would be a hero. He flew up and out of the building. And onto a tall building sat and just cleared his head, he looked down to notice a bank robbery happening he jumped off the building and was free falling for a moment or two, before he began gliding at the bank. He smashed straight through the window taking out two thugs, Who is this idiot? one thug yelled. The boss of the robbers yelled, who cares? Waste the loser. the lackey raised his rifle and aimed at Darrell, but before he could get a shot off Darrell fired a laser melting the weapon. now now no need for name calling, so what are you going to do without your fancy little toy there? the thug ran straight at Darrell and took a swing, he dodged and thrust his elbow into the attackers stomach, immobilizing him. The boss yelled, no damn way! he brandished his side arm and fired several shots, but in his panic missed each one. Darrell burned off the boss' hand, forcing him to lose his weapon and way of fighting back, then Darrell shot at the chandelier which fell and knocked out the boss, but he was hit from behind in his head, knocking him out before more damage could be done the police fired a tear gas grenade in the bank, Darrell staggered up. Freeze! You in the mask! Hands up now! an officer yelled. Darrell was completely surrounded. An officer spoke into his radio, we have apprehended a dangerous vigilante. The lights blinded Darrell, he dared not move for fear of being shot. He was forced to the ground and handcuffed. He was shoved into a cop car, and was driven down to the station. He sat in an interrogation room and waited for half an hour, until finally the chief of police walked in. based on this report, you are some sort of mutant and can fly and fire lasers? Darrell stared at the table, but did answer, that is true. the chief of police began laughing, you expect me to believe such garbage? Darrell didn't hesitate, he fired a single beam into the table, disintegrating it, believe it now? he asked in an insulting tone. The chief didn't act surprised, he simply smiled, perfect, we've been waiting for someone like you. he extended his hand, welcome to the world of criminal justice. Darrell reached for it and shook his hand. let us begin your training. Darrell was pulled out of his seat and dragged into a shooting range, he practiced firing to disarm targets. And then he went through flight training, and ways to move silently when he turned invisible. It was a full year, before he was finally perfect in each test, and ready to stop crime. The chief came in and shook his hand, are you ready? We have a hostage situation in progress we need you down there asap. Darrell nodded his head and flew out the door. Now because of his training Darrell could fly immensely faster. He arrived on scene within minutes of having left and he spoke to an officer, I'm here, give me the briefing. an officer armed

with his pistol looked at him in disbelief,i just got of the phone with HQ. They said you were still there how did you get across town that fast? i flew now briefing give it to me. the officer closed his mouth and said, right you're that new mutant guy they trained, oh boy listen you better not muck up this case you got that? These are real peoples lives on the line. Darrell's expression worsened, though the officer couldn't tell behind Darrell's mask. Briefing. Now. the officer stood up pressed against the wall for cover, okay we have 6 hostages in there, we don't know how many suspects there are but they are armed. Darrell straightened up not bothering to stay covered. got it, you stay here I'll get the hostages out safe and alive. before the unreasoning officer could say anything, Darrell cloaked himself from sight and began walking in the front door of the building, he flew up silently until he reached the high roof and looked around. He was in an office building he saw two thugs guarding the stairs, certain that they disabled the elevator. He flew down behind them, exploiting the small mistake they made they stood too close to each other. He grabbed the back of their shirts, and knocked them out using their heads. Remaining unseen he slowly ascended the stairs floating. He looked around the second floor, cubicles were disheveled and missing, and in the clearing of the corner were three businessmen all on their knees with hands over their heads. With two large thugs standing behind them armed with shotguns. And there was one thug slightly smaller than the others asking questions for information, simple ones like, anyone have their cellphones?, how much money have you all got?, and the ever classic, where's the safe and the safe's combination?. Darrell slowly descended behind the two larger thugs and thought to himself, let's see if we can't have a little fun. Darrell stood between the thugs and waited for the the third to look up, when he did Darrell became visible, but his position made him seen only by the interrogator, what the hell is that? he yelled, Shoot it shoot it! the large thugs turned around instantly, only to see nothing because Darrell was invisible once more. hey that's not funny just 'cause we're don't mean we is stupid. the speaking thug went and sat down keeping his firearm pointed at the interrogator. i swear there was something there! Don't act so tough just because you have that infernal piece of metal pointing at me. the sitting thug looked behind the third thug to see a floating head, it was Darrell who was only partly visible. What is that thing? he yelled and pointed as he reached for his gun, but when he picked up his head again, it was gone. The interrogator looked up scared but when he saw nothing there, he turned to the terrified thug, Jim now I know you are making fun of me, and for a gorilla like you it's hard with such a low intellect, but don't insult mine. I actually saw something. Jim stood up towering over the interrogator menacingly, there was something there. the third thug remained relatively silent, suddenly he saw a flying head upside down just behind his comrades, terrified, he fired his shotgun straight at them hoping to kill the head that was haunting everyone. Once he opened his eyes, he had realized what he had just done, he looked down to see his associates dead on the floor. He heard a voice behind him say into his ear, now that ended far too quick I had hoped for something more fun. the thug turned around and fired another shot. He just stood there shivering then he asked, hey you guys work here, is this place haunted or something? none of them responded. Darrell face-palmed and landed in front of the oaf to reveal himself, there is no ghost you idiot, just me, and you shouldn't have killed your buddies, though it makes my job easier. he fired again. Darrell flew up just before he shot, tsk tsk, that wasn't very nice. dodged another shot, are you sure they hired the right guy for this job? another shot. wow you truly are dimwitted aren't you one more shot. Darrell landed and simply stood there his hands up in the air, tell you what, one free shot right here I'm not going to move and you have your weapon right there, just give it to me. the thug was bewildered but pulled the trigger anyway. n-nothing happened. the thug said. Darrell crossed his arms, no duh you ran out of bullets, learn to count next time. he fired a laser at his leg making him stoop over to hold it in pain, Darrell simply walked over and knocked him out with a kick to the jaw. you're safe now, there is an officer waiting outside for you, I'll get your three coworkers now. he turned but one of the guys said, wait. They, they already killed them, they were trying to fight back the man that just died shot them. Darrell

looked at him, I'm sorry. he flew away to the third floor. The third floor was the boss' office. It was a large spacious room. It held three objects, a computer, a desk, and a chair. There was a man sitting in that chair, quickly tapping on all the keys, stopping only once or twice, for but a moment or two. Darrell quietly approached him from behind completely visible. you know I doubt you are the head of this company, so you should quit trying to access their files and money. the man didn't look up, he didn't even bother to hesitate his typing. you don't understand, I'm finding their secrets. They have data on everyone in the world, not to mention cure's for all kinds of illnesses and I need that most of all. he stopped typing suddenly, he stood up and turned around in one fluid motion. Darrell caught a glimpse of the one mind behind this operation. His mouth was wide and thin, his nose small, his eyes large, and small green holes dotted his face. Darrell took a step back, taken back at his appearance. I'm a freak right? Just go ahead and admit it, everyone always does. Darrell only said, who are you? the man smiled, revealing his hideous yellow teeth, based on how little we know each other, let's just call me Radian. Darrell couldn't help it, he let out a loud laugh, That. That's your big bad super-villain name? Radian looked at him, his expression changed in an instant, i am not the villain, the people of this corporation, they did this to me. he gestured to his face. they are the true villains, besides at least I'm not prancing around in tights, what's your name mister high and mighty? Darrell stood up straight and placed his fists upon his waist, i am the spectral ruby. he said proudly. Radian laughed, a laughed that echoed and bellowed throughout the entire floor, that is your name? It sounds as if you searched a website for the most stupid name for a super hero you could get. Darrell became enraged instantly, the name is for her! he yelled shaking the walls, he charged straight at Radian and grabbed him by the neck. now now hero let's not be hasty here he chuckled. Darrell became angrier, is everything a joke to you? I swear you will rot in jail for this! Radian looked at him and said simply, there is one perk to what they did to me. he laughed loud once more. He grabbed Darrell's wrist and wrenched it off his neck with ease. now this is the part that is actually funny. he picked Darrell up and threw him into the far wall as if he were a rag doll. you see when they did this too me they gave me the strength to crush any and all that stand in my way. Darrell gasped for breath the blow of hitting the wall knocked the wind out of him. He stood up, well that was a nice surprise, but I have a surprise for you too Darrell raised his hands and fired two lasers from his hands, Radian picked up the desk and blocked the attack. i knew that already, I told you this company had information on everyone. I also know of your flight and invisibility. Darrell was completely dumbfounded, he had no tricks up his sleeves. i see well then, I have no choice. Darrell became invisible and started flying behind Radian, oh no hero where did you go, oh wait. he pointed at Darrell, there you are. how is that possible that you found me? Radian laughed once again, i can see heat traces. Darrell became visible once more and jumped into the air and floated high above Radian's head. so predictable hero! he yelled as he punched the concrete the porcelain tile floor shattering it to pieces he picked up several shards and began throwing them at deadly speeds at Darrell, giving him scratches all over as he makes very narrow dodges. Once Radian ran out of tile shards Darrell was already covered in several bleeding gouges. He landed on the ground, alright let's try hand to hand, no powers. Radian dropped the shards he had just retrieved, very well. he said as he put up his fists. Darrell charged at swinging his fist straight at the freak's face, Radian grabbed his fist and flipped Darrell over himself and straight onto the destroyed floor. He could feel blood dripping on his back. He rolled over jumped up and kicked Radian in his chest forcing him back, and while Radian was reeling back he fired two lasers at him leaving scorch marks on the freak's torso. what happened to no powers hero? Radian laid on the floor in pain. be happy I didn't kill you with that. Darrell said. A response team of cops came barging in to see the bloody scene. lock him away boys. Darrell said as he burst out the window flying back to HQ.

He walked in and saluted the chief, whom told him to head to the infirmary. He laid on a bed when a nurse came by and began bandaging him up once she had finished she walked away and closed the curtain, get some rest, you've lost a lot of blood. she said. Darrell laid his head back and closed his eyes, but he overheard two officers in the infirmary, hey are you going to be alright? That freak really screwed you up didn't he? the other officer spoke in hushed pained tone, no my arm is supposed to bend opposite of my elbow! calm down, don't get mad at me, we had no idea that freak had that kind of strength. Besides be happy you didn't end up like our friends, you're still alive. yeah, you're right, it's that new trainee freak's fault, he didn't bother telling us about that guy. Darrell ignored the rest of the conversation, he was too distracted by the thought that because he left and let Radian live, officers died. It was all his fault. He should have stayed and helped arrest him. Darrell stood up and turned invisible to walk out the building. He took a walk around the block in the dead of night, he watched a purse snatching and flew after the criminal he gliding kicked the snatcher knocking him down, he took the purse back to the woman. But as soon as he turned around he saw the same criminal going after another woman's purse, that's when he decided it. Death was the only way to stop criminals. He flew up at the snatcher and just before he could repeat his crime, Darrell fired upon him, leaving a large gaping hole in the snatcher's chest. The second woman screamed and ran away from the smoking corpse. Darrell stood next to him, this is the only way, you have payed for your crimes. Darrell flew away as the purse snatcher slowly died. It had been several months after the purse snatcher murder. Forensics linked him to it, he was now labeled a criminal and was marked arrest or kill on sight. His good name was not helped by the fact he took his fee from the bank vaults he had saved. Darrell entered the ruins that were once his home, he walked into the basement and opened an untainted door to walk into what was now his headquarters. He turned on the police scanner searching for crimes going on. When he heard, we got an armed robbery in progress at the bank on main street, requesting backup. he stood up, opened his self closing trapdoor and flew towards the bank. He saw two squad cars sitting in front on the road, without giving them a second thought he burst through the window having shot out the glass. so what do we have here? Now don't you know it is wrong to take money that isn't yours? one of the thugs looked up at him, hey aren't you that freak with that loser name? Darrell's hands began glowing red, the name is spectral ruby, and it isn't a loser name! he finished yelling as fired lasers completely engulfing the thief's body. Disintegrating him entirely. Two other robbers looked up completely terrified, they began firing their guns at him. He flew up in the air and hid from their sight, you will all pay for your crimes, and you shall share your comrades fate, my name was dedicated to her. the thugs looked all around we got hostages in the backroom and we will start killing them one by one. Darrell laughed maniacally, you think I care? I am sure they have all committed crimes of some sort. one of the thieves showed his cowardice nature and began screaming and firing his gun aimlessly. The cops outside Darrell could hear them yelling at their radio, shots fired I repeat shots fired! he knew they would storm the building soon. He flew behind the criminals as soon as the shots stopped he reappeared and whispered to them, repent your sins for I reunite you with our maker. he placed his palms upon their backs, goodbye. he could only see fear in their eyes as he fired his lasers once more leaving the tell tale smoking craters in their bodies. He turned around to see the room holding the hostages and the mastermind of this heist. He bust down the door just to find an attractive woman being held with terror in her eyes as a handgun was held to her head. As a burly voice came from behind her, now no sudden movements or else this pretty little face wont see another day, and none of that invisibility, because the second I can't see you anymore I shoot. Darrell leaned up against the wall behind him, so you reveal your cowardice by hiding behind a woman? That's pretty lame, can't even show your face. the woman's fear

instantly disappeared. not quite hero. she pulled out two pistols she had been hiding behind her back. Darrell completely shocked jumped up floating he saw behind her was a stereo playing the voice, I see so you planned all this and thought you'd get away by playing the damsel in distress. Clever I must say. the woman smirked, well thank you, but you said thought I would get away, I know I am getting away. she began firing. Darrell began flying away hoping to dodge the bullets he disappeared, but as he flew he slowly became seen again and started falling unable to remain airborne. He fell victim to gravity and hit the ground hard. The woman approached him while he laid helpless, his hands began glowing, he picked them up to fire, but no projectiles left his body, he looked at his palms disbelievingly. aw is the poor hero all out of juice? What no lasers? Darrell simply looked up at her as she pointed the barrel straight at his eye. well let us end this so I can leave with my money. she slowly squeezed the trigger.*click*, she pulled it once more,*click* she pointed the other pistol at him,*click*, well that is wonderful, no bullets, how lucky for you, perhaps I shall let the cops handle you. she flipped the gun in her hand and crashed it against Darrell's skull. He fell to the ground motionless, barely conscious, as she ran out pretending to be a surviving hostage, as the cops moved in. They surrounded him weapons pointed he fired a single laser from his eyes, killing a single officer, as another used the stun gun on him. He blacked out. As he opened his eyes, he looked down to see he had been strapped into a hospital bed, completely immobilized. He looked at his arm to see an iv connected to strange blue liquid pumping into him. He tried to tug and remove this foreign fluid, when a voice warned him, i wouldn't do that if I were you, that medicine is the only thing keeping you alive right now. Darrell frantically looked for a body to match the voice, all he found was a pane of glass, he assumed the voice spoke to him from behind it. what are you talking about. he faintly spoke. The voice chuckled, I'm sure you noticed you powers weakened and you passed out. That is because your powers are draining your life force. Darrell lifted his head to speak to the glass directly, no I passed out because that crazy lady cracked my skull. the voice didn't change its solemn monotone voice, no that simply lowered you within inches of death, not to mention that final beam didn't help your health. soon the single iron door slowly opened revealing the very doctor he had escaped from. That is when all the pieces fit together for Darrell, I am at Genetiinnovations again, aren't I? the doctor smiled a sinister grin, yes my dear boy and you shall not be leaving on account of your health condition, you see, removal from this iv will give you roughly 10 minutes to live, it is the minimal dosage. We have created a more potent version that will give you a full 24 hours at a time. Darrell's mask had been damaged by his final blast at the bank, and the doctor could see the desperation in his eyes. The doctor grinned once more, we decided to let you live, if you cooperate. Darrell struggled in his restraints, give it to me please, I want to keep these powers and my life. I promise. the doctor nodded and released the restraints and refilled the strange blue goo. He motioned Darrell to follow. There was a large empty room with steel walls everywhere there was nothing in the room save for one box, a small chest. The doctor handed him the box, you see they are simple shots, you inject it into your arm, and you are set to go for another 24 hours. All we need is you to cooperate in our quest for global domination. Darrell furrowed his brows, and unwillingly agreed. The doctor maniacally laughed, very good, here have another 24 hours of life my friend. the doctor handed him an injection. in this box there is a good months worth. Darrell smiled, luckily his mask covered his evil smile, he injected the antidote into his arm. well thanks doc, I am feeling much better, in fact I'm feeling at the top of my game so, bye. he said as he vanished snatched the box and began flying away losing his iv. The doctor hit a panic button on the wall. Darrell flew faster than ever before firing blasts hotter and more brilliant than before, he melted walls with ease he escaped in a mere 5 minutes. He flew laughing uncontrollably as he landed at his old home. it should give me 48 hours if I add another shot. Darrell prepared his arm, but as the needle penetrated his skin, he noticed this felt different than before. He

began felling light headed he looked closely at the vials to see at his dismay that his life saving antidote had turned out to be colored water. He crushed the glass tube in his hand out of frustration. He yelled as tears began forming in his eyes. He flew with the little energy he had, and landed at the cemetery, he got down on one knee in exhaustion, he began breathing heavily, gasping for air. He looked at Katherine's grave stone, he began crying, i shall see you soon. suddenly his head ached intensely. He felt as if his eyes were being smashed by his own skull, his brain pounding against the sides of his head, his arms were limp. His eyes began glowing as he looked up at the sky, he began firing his lasers into the night sky causing a light bright enough to illuminate the whole town. He could not stop the beam, he had no control, his eyes began burning, he screamed in agony. Blood began flowing down his face, trickling down his cheeks. The beams began dying down, dimming, and eventually going out. He fell to his knees, he muttered one last thing, Katherine, I love you. he fell upon his chest laying in front of Katherine's grave stone. The color ruby red flowed down Darrell's face, coloring the ground Katherine laid buried under. Silence had covered the cemetery once more, serenity, peace. Darrell closed his eyes slowly, ending the flow of the ruby colored fluid. A small breeze flew past Darrell picking up a few leafs and brushing them away. The spectral ruby's crusade, had ended. End.
