Solvent scouring uses solvents like dry cleaning fluids to dissolve and remove natural oils, fats, waxes and other impurities from fabrics like cotton and fabrics with elastomeric fibers. It penetrates fabrics better than water due to the low surface tension of solvents. However, solvents are flammable and some are carcinogenic or damage the ozone layer, so solvent scouring poses explosion and health hazards and the solvents must be carefully recovered.
