What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a revolutionary design framework that applies natures


patterns to human systems. It uses ecological principles to integrate
food and energy production, shelter, and community development.
Its aim is the creation of sustainable human settlements that are
harmoniously woven into the environment and that have the diversity,
stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.
Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaias Garden: A Guide to
Home-Scale Permaculture, the best-selling permaculture book in the
world for the past eight years. He has been an adjunct professor at
Portland State University, Scholar-in Residence at Pacic University,
and has taught over sixty 72-hour permaculture design courses.
