Tell the students the learning objectives of this activity.
Say, "Today we are going to represent our culture and values
to the class. We will represent an object that is meaningful to
our beliefs and culture.

Video activity:
Ask learners to think and jot down words or important
features that describe their cultures and beliefs.
Students are encouraged to recall or reflect some important
structures about their own cultures and backgrounds to
share it with the class
Allow the students to share what they have written down
with other students to stimulate similar recollection and to
share their experience.
Tell students that they are going to watch a short video of 15
minutes about five people that have immigrated to Canada a
few years ago.
Hand the students questionnaires handout about the video
to allow the students learn some new vocabulary in English
from the video.
The goal of this activity is to activate prior knowledge and
allow the students experience other cultures in Canada to
prepare them to speak about their own cultures.

Show the students the video. The video demonstrates how
people express themselves and talk about the most valuable
thing for them in their country and culture.

Have the learners take the time to think about something
that could be similar or different from their culture.
Allow the students to link what they know to the video they
have just seen.
Allow students to reflect on what they saw through the
questionnaires about the video.
As a large group, call on students to answer questions
voluntarily.

Tell the students what the objects are. How and why they
were used back home. Why these objects were kept and how
people have used them back home. Why these objects are
important. What is the representation of these items?

Explain: We use the Present Perfect Tense to talk about an
action which started in the past but has a connection to the
present .
Examples:
This item has been used for centuries in my country.
We have used this item as a smoking cigar kit.
This item represent my culture because people have used
this in the kitchen.
How long have you been in Canada?
Explain that the present perfect is used most of the time
with: already, for, since, for many years, for centuries, etc.
List on the board some of the main verbs that the students
need to use in order to express themselves.

Example Image 1: (Argileh): an oriental tobacco pipe with a
long flexible tube. People have used it for centuries to smoke
it like a cigarette.
Example 2: A mortar and pestle): People have used these is
a device since ancient times to prepare ingredients or
substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste
or powder. The mortar is a bowl, typically made of hard
wood, ceramic or stone. The pestle is a heavy club-shaped
object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding.

listen carefully to

Explain to the students that now it is their turn to explain
and share their ideas in groups of five.
Explain to the students that each student takes his item and
shows it to the class by explaining why this object is valuable
to them in their culture.
Students will take turns and rotate by talking about their own
objects and its links to their culture and family history in
their groups. Each student needs to explain since when, what
is the object, why and how has each object been used in
their countries.
Divide groups into groups of five.
Each student will have about 2-5 minutes to describe his/her
object to their group.
As a large group, ask all learners to place their objects on the
table of the center of the class.
Students are encouraged to go around and see all the
objects.
As the objects are placed on the table, learners are
encouraged to ask questions to each other or add comments
on others' stories.

Wrap up
Hand a present perfect worksheet to the students and allow
them to work in pairs.
Students must complete the handouts by conjugating the
verb in the correct form.
Example present perfect worksheet:
1.Alice and Tim ___________________ (know) each other for
long time.
2. Alice _______________ (work) with Tim in the same company
for many years.
Wrap up the session by reviewing and correcting the handout
with the students.
Optional: Hand out the students additional extra exercises to
practice at home and reflect on what they have learned in
class. The following day the teacher will go over the
worksheet and correct it with the students.
