We were told to make 4 different interviews and we used different types of
formats which we learnt how to do by watching a number of professionals
doing interviews because it allow to understand what approach they have
when doing an interview and the right questions to ask when doing this
interview and we also had a number of different topics. As well as the
production side we also had to do post and pre-production, the post
production was all the arrangements that were made before we done our
filming, these were things like; what location we are going shot, who we
are going to shoot and we had to get a number of other things sorted
before we done our production, and the pre-production was when we
finished and the editing and anything else we need to do at the end of our
production.
Binge drinking-Documentary
Me and dayo
Pre-Production process
Our first interview was based on binge drinking we started off by looking
what type of format we were going to present it in we looked at news
shows, documentary and chat show, after watching interviews which
related to these formats we made a presentation which we had to share to
the bbc to explain why we want to do these interviews and they listened
and picked which one they liked best.
Once they picked documentary we done more research on the shows we
watched which were; cherry goes drinking, ready steady drink and others
these were all very good for us to help plan because they were all about
binge drinkers as well.
So once we had the idea we had to find people we thought would be
relevant to binge drinking and because we have a younger target
audience we decided to make a documentary talking about the increase of
binge drinking in university, so we decided to email a number of people
who we know that will be interested in doing this as well as being
interested we needed to make it relevant so we also needed to make sure
those we asked had some sort of experience either being a binge drinker
or witnessing someone who is a binge drinker from this we got a number
of people who were interested but because of the title of our show we
wanted to have some interview in a university so as well as emailing a
number of people we also emailed a number of interviews. Because it was
a documentary we wanted some facts as well because most people that
we were in opinions so we lastly emailed a number of doctors and nurses.
From all these emails we got a number of responses either saying yes
they could or no with a reason explaining why so the information we got
was; 4 people to interview, we got ravensbourne university to allow us to
use their campus as long as we do it after teaching times as well as Christ
the king st marys but unfortunately we were unable to get any doctors or
nurses because of their busy schedule.
Once we had all the people we need to interview and knew where these
were going to be set we were able to make a storyboard about how we are
going to set it and a script of the questions we are going to say so we can
give it to our interviewees this is an approach we are going to do to help
make the ready for the question and to make sure that none of the
questions will offend them, this is something that a number of interviews
that I have watch do but those that dont have asked question which have
offended the interviewee and that is something I wouldnt like to do to
mine.
We then looked at a number of different interviewers and there style of
interviewing and dressing style because we were doing a documentary I
look at Ross Kemp, cherry and others they both dressed casual not as if
they were doing a news show so I know this was something that I was
going to do as well, and there interviews approach were very calm this
was because they didnt want annoy there interviewees but when I done
my interview practice earlier they said that I was to laid back and the
question were quiet slow, so after watching this I knew being laid back
was a good approach but I know I was going to have more urgency when
asking question because as well as the audience switching of my
interviewee will also switch off.
So our pre-production was very good and we had a chance to make a
good interview because we followed the convention to make a good
interview.
When we as this was our first interview I think we handled the preproduction part of the work well but the overall shooting of the interviews
had a lot of thing which I feel could have been improved I think that, the
overall camera angles we used were very good and the cut we used for
the intro as we were walking up we got the idea for this in a number of
documentary and the cuts we used for this was also very good and
worked well, but we have certain things we could change this wasnt to do
with the overall look of the show but it was mostly to do with the
interviews we done we done 4 interviews and we had 1 interview which
was successful this was because we didnt interview people who were
effected by binge drinking but instead we interviewed people who had
witnessed someone binge drinking, this wasnt good because they didnt
know what they were talking about and wasnt comfortable answer the
question as well as this they had no emotions when they were telling the
stories of the binge drinkers but the final interview was very good because
she was somebody know who had experience with binge drinking so we
know that when we were going to do it again we know what we need to
add
Post Production feedback
Once we had finished our shooting and showed it to our class and teacher
we had got feedback they said Poor sound and editing. Good use of
initiative to good off site and interview well done however, you need to
choose your interview wisely so you have someone good to talk to, this
will help you give a better interview. Ladi need to see more of your
interview techniques. Progressing from point to point, building bridges,
more of your personality. Dont interrupt your interviewee with health
info. Watch your body language looks confident and relaxed.
Target Audience
Our target audience was the same as bbc 3 which is 16-34 this was
something we done well aiming at the target audience we done this by
using people who are in that target audience and we also went to a
university because they will be able to relate to the people we used.
I already had an understanding of what they would like in the show
however, I needed to find more opinions to make my show have
individuality and also relatable to my young viewers needs. Also the
feelings I gained from watching this documentary which made me think
'drink responsibly when I'm out with my friends'. I would like viewers to
feel this, watching how much they drink once they see other people who
don't have perfect health
Comparison to other presenters/shows
Ross Kemp because it was a relaxed approached which he does and it
wasnt like a number of other interviews which you could see was are
being scripted but our wasnt you can tell by how we were building
bridges, another reason I would compare myself with him is his welcoming
approach that no matter who he is talking to they feel comfortable to talk
to him and I think that was the same with me.
Ched Evans -News show
Me and Ik and Richard
Post Production Feedback
Once we had finished our shoot we had got feedback from our teacher
and class mates they said that we had structured it as a news show and
we had a good approach to the interview our overall show was good. The
feedback I got was This was a creative well planned interview with good
interviewees well done. Ladi watch your body language, face your
interviewee and increase eye contact. Is that going over the top dont
use leading questions. Good use of questioning, slightly combatitive
which works in this context. Body language is not as confident as the
questioning. Discussion at the end breaks conventions newsreaders
shouldnt have an opinion.
Pre-Production Process
When creating this interview we had to start off with doing our research
into what we wanted to do with a news show format so we looked into the
what topics were interesting at this point in time we also need to think of
the topic our target audience would be most interested in watching so
once we had done our research into which topics were most interesting to
us we decided to pick 3 and we made a face book statues asking which
one will interest our target audience most. After they had picked Ched
Evans was the topic they were most interested in, so we started of my
looking into the case with more detail before we had to tell our client our
idea which they approved.
Because Ched Evans was found guilty we know that we couldnt defend
him when we were doing this, this was a very careful topic so we needed
plan the interview a lot. We started off by getting a question which will be
the topic of the show which was should Ched Evans be allowed to
continue playing football? we choose this question because we didnt
want to talk about the topic of rape, so we know that we had to get people
to interview who had a football knowledge and understands that
footballers are a role model so I knew a number of people who play
football semi pro and professional so I got in contact with them. But while I
was waiting for their reply I decided to look into different types of news
reporters to see how news reporters approach a news interview and what
type of questions they ask, I looked at 3 very different interviewers but
they are similar in certain ways; Jeremy Paxman, Jon Snow and Dermot
Murnaghan. I looked at Jeremy Paxman because he has a relaxed
approached but he is a very combabtive interviewer he is very honest and
straight to the point as well as being able to play very serious topics
without offending people he is also very good at getting the answer from
people even if they try to answer it in a certain way he will get the answer
he wants to hear. Even though I said that Jeremy Paxman is a combabtive
approach Dermot Murnaghan is more combabtive he is also more straight
to the point, when he is interviewing he doesnt wait for his interviewee to
give there reply instead he waits until they say something and he will cut
them off if he disagrees with what they are saying and the last interviewer
I looked at was Jon Snow unlike the other 2 he is the least combabtive he
has a very relaxed approach but this is still a very good approach because
it allows the interviewee to feel relaxed and want to answer the question.
So once this had been done I was able to get my questions and think of
what type will get the best of watch. Once this was done I needed to
know where I was going to host the interviews I decided to do this in
Christ the kings green room this is because most news show interviews
are held in a green room so I wanted to structure it there, then I needed to
make sure who I was interview and arrange a date in which he is free to
interview after interviewing a number of professionals who were not
available because of their busy schedules or they were not around
because of where they play football so I had to do Clifford who is a semi
pro footballer. So now that everything was sorted I was able to start
interviewing them.
Target Audience
Our target audience was a number of people because we are doing a
news show where a number of people watch it but our main target
audience was the same audience as the bbc 3, but because it was a
football case we wanted a number of young footballers to watch this
because it shows that if you do something like this it show the effect it has
on your career and how people will be against you it also shows that
footballers get sanctions like anyone else, but because this was such a
popular talking point on social media we thought that our target audience
was interested in this topic and wanted to know because they all have
different opinions.
Young people like to watch things which relate to them and also things
they can understand, if we create this with a feel which young male and
females feel involved with what is going on with Ched Evans this will give
us more of an insight of their opinions if he should be given a second
chance.
Comparison to other presenters/shows
Channel 4, Jeremy Pacman, the reason I picked him is because I feel that
he is the best presenter when it comes to asking the question which
people want to know and I think he is quiet combatitive, the reason I will
compare him to me is even though he is more relaxed when he is doing a
interview we have a same approach with the question techniques and this
works well when doing a news show, we both used there answer to build
bridges but we done it in a way which the interviewee had to know
enough about the topic to be able to back themselves up. Another thing
we done similar was to allow the interviewee to feel relaxed at the start by
asking them questions like how are you? this is because it allows the
interviewee to be relaxed and get ready to harder question to make the
overall interview flow more.
Relationship -Chat show
Me and Hobie and Bradley
Post Production Feedback
Once we had finished our shoot we had got feedback from our teacher
and class mates our teacher said Sound issues play back on set so you
can test out sound issues. Setting looks like job interview, dont sit so
far from the people you are interviewing. Use multi camera set up. The
VT feels stuck on you should reference it in your interview and relate it to
what youre talking about. Also the VT is so longer. All three good use of
eye contact, good progressing from point to point. Interview much too
long, keep it short and relevant to target audience. No outro, just ends.
Pre-Production Process
After hearing a number of people talking about relationship and seeing
them get into them we were told that we showed do an interviewed based
on relationships this was something which is something which different
people have opinions on this so me and my group wanted to do it like a
gossip show/ chat show this is something we got the idea from show like
loose women we looked at this show because we wanted to have the
same layout this is because its a calm approach and its as if they are
having a casual conversation this will also allow the interviewee to feel
relaxed and want to talk. Then we looked at people we could invite to
interview we wanted a number of people male and female and
relationship and not, this is because we want a number of different
peoples point of views when we are doing this when we emailed them we
couldnt get a number of people to do it because of their busy schedule so
we had to change the script because we could only get Lanre and Chico to
do what we needed, so instead of us having a number of different
interviews we would only have two.
Then we needed to think of the best place we could host this interview to
make it look like a chat show we decide to use a class room because of
the amount of room they have and the table we are going to use we will
make it look like a group discussion.
So we done our filming and wanted to get everybody in the shot so we
used a long shot this was good to get everybody in the shot and we felt at
the time that it was good because the lighting was good and when
originally recording the sounding of it was very good because everyone
could be heard. Because we gave them a copy of the script they were
already prepared for the question this allowed it to flow, but we should
have changed the camera shoot and used a single camera technique this
is because this camera angle gets tedious and my audience will lose
interest. Another thing we done well was the shorts clips we used, we
done this because we know that we need to have breaks to keep the
audience interacted and by adding clips will do so and because we used
them based on relationships they were relevant.
Another thing that I wanted to do was by adding more interviews because
one interview didnt allow us to express a number of views so next time
we do this we will be making more than one interview and well interview
people of different gender this is because I want a balanced argument this
is something a number of chats shows do by introducing a number of
people in their shows, this is good because we only had one long interview
instead of a number of shorter ones this is to keep the audience more
interactive.
Target Audience
Recently the discussion of young people in relationship has increased and
because of the channel we put it on it was aimed at a young people age
16-34, we helped to involve our target audience by having viewers who
are a young audience and tell help express there feeling why this is good
because other people in the age group will be feeling the same.
I think that naturally, when comparing the topic to the other topics I have
previously done, the topic naturally can attract our given audience more
because it is a subject, people in our target market tend to either be in,
getting into or conflict in their lives are mainly about this, so I think that
the topic itself can grab the audiences attentions and I think that the
questions we focused on also had a sense of being able to grab our
audiences and maintain some however, as mentioned before, the
interview did run longer than expected because of the engaging
atmosphere and the constant questions and answers back and forth with
in turn seems dragged on for people in our target market; as mentioned
before, a typical person in this age range has an average attention span of
4 minutes before losing interest or and turning off. I also think that if we
was to hype up the topic the way BBC three do in regards of their own
programs, quick snappy shots and scenes , we could have made this
production even better.
Comparison to other presenters/shows
Loose women, the reason Ive picked this is because our show is similar to
loose women because it was a chat I also think that our show has the
same approach when coming into the interview and the format we used
we also had a welcoming approach which was good because it helped us
have a comfortable to talk and not hold anything back.
