The Continuing Significance of Race: An American Dilemma

Racism and discrimination against African Americans have been issues in America since its founding, as the country struggled to address these problems during slavery, segregation, and modern legal and systemic racism. While some progress has been made over the past 300 years, America's democratic foundations remain cracked by racism against African Americans, women, and minorities. As a result, many facets of oppression still exist and are prevalent in 21st century American society, demonstrating why race continues to be a significant issue.

The Continuing Significance of Race: An American Dilemma

Extract :
The history of America has been closely pegged with racism and discrimination against
African Americans, its an issue the founding fathers struggled to address in the early
stage of the great nation and as a result it has continued to haunt our society during
slavery, Jim Crows segregation, and modern day legalized and systematic racism.
Since the inception of America, the house of democracy has been plagued with cracks
of racism and discrimination against African Americans, women and other minority
groups. During the last 300 years we have made little attempts to fix these cracks and
as a result, we have struggled with defective a foundation. Yet in the 21st century there
are still many facets of oppression that exits and are prevalent in American society.
Thus, here lies the problem of why race still matters in America.
Stephen Balkaran, African American Studies Instructor. Quinnipiac University.
