Instructionsforan8strandRound/SquareBraid
This common braid is basically an 8strand expansion of the 4strand round braid.
Whenworkedwithoutacoreithasasquarecrosssection,butifworkedwithacore,itwill
conformsomewhattotheshapeofthecore,tendingtoberoundincrosssection.
Tobegin,holdfourstrandsineachhand.Bringtheoutsiderighthandstrandaroundbehind
theotherrighthandstrandsandthetwoinsidelefthandstrands.Thenbringitupthroughthe
middleofthelefthandstrands,andbackovertotherighthandasindicatedbytheblue
arrow.Keepittotheinsideoftheotherrighthandstrands.
Thesecondstepisbasicallythesameasthefirst,onlyreversed.Taketheoutsidelefthand
strandandbringitaroundbehindthebraidandupthroughthemiddleoftherighthand
strandsandbacktothelefthandasshownbythearrow.Keepittotheinsideoftheother
lefthandstrands.

Hereyoucanseebothstepshavebeendone.Thesetwostepsarerepeatedfortherestofthe
braid.
Hereyoucanseewhatashortlengthofthebraidlookslike.
There are numerous color patterns that can be done with this braid, and I have
included a few of them here. To make one of the patterns, simply arrange the different
coloredstrandsinthesamepositionsthattheyareinattheendsofthebraidsinthepictures.
Byhavingtwolightstrandsandtwodarkstrandsoneachside,withbothlightstrandstothe
outsideofbothdarkstrands,awidechevronpatternisproducedontwosidesofthebraid.

Thisshowswhattheothertwosidesofthepatternabovelooklike.
Byarrangingthestrandsinadarklightdarklightpattern,thebraidwillhavenarrow
chevronsonfoursides.Thechevronswillpointinoppositedirectionsonadjacentsides
Byhavingalllightstrandsononesideandalldarkstrandsontheother,thebraidwillhave
linearstripes.
