POTENTIAL APPRAISAL

The aim of performance and potential assessment is


to identify training and development needs,
provide guidance on possible directions in which
an individual’s career might go, and to indicate
who has a potential for promotion.
In making potential appraisal of managers, levels of
talent and ambition have to be clearly identified.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POTENTIAL APPRAISAL

To assess an individual in terms of the


highest level of work the individual will be able to
handle comfortably and successfully in future
without being over-stretched. To assist the
organization in discharging its responsibility of
selecting and developing managers for the future
to ensure continuous growth of the organization.

VITAL QUALITIES---which determine the potential of an


employee.

Analytical power
Creative imagination
Sense of reality
Capability of taking holistic view from a detached
position
Effective leadership
Analytical power---- this indicates the ability to

Breakdown or reformulate an apparently complicated


problems into workable units.
Continue analysis of the problem until all the aspects
have been thoroughly and critically examined.

Creative imagination:
This quality relates to the ability of an
individual to discern the various useful
possibilities and alternatives, which are inherent
in a problem area and are normally not obvious
to less perceptive observers.

Sense of real This quality is important because a


deficiency in the ability to interpret the reality of
the situation will impair the effectiveness of the
individual.
The extent to which an individual’s interpretation of
the information on which he has to take action
shows that he has taken full account of the
realities of the situation.
Holistic view from a detached position:.
This quality will make an individual----
To look at problems from a higher vantage point
with simultaneous attention to relevant details to
shape one’s work and act accordingly.

To place facts and problems within a broader


context by immediately detecting relevant
relationships.
Effective leadership:

This quality indicates manager’s ability to inspire


people. It consists effective communication,
directions and ability to motivate people.
