Part Five
Ms. Megs Classroom Management Plan
Fall 2015-Spring 2016
Classroom Rules
# 1 Come to Class Prepared to Learn
a. Have a writing utensil, paper, book, completed homework and an open mind
# 2 Be Respectful of Our Time
# 3 Safety is a Priority
# 4 Honesty is the Best Policy
How I Teach
I am big proponent of engaging students minds and bodies in the process of learning.
We do lots of activities that require students to interact with me and with each other in an
effort to learn about biology on a relatable level. Hence, Rule #1 requires an open mind.
Students who choose not to participate are depriving themselves and their classmates of a
complete learning experience. I do not tolerate negativity, exclusion, or non-constructive
criticism. If a student cannot be supportive of the learning environment then he/she will
be asked to leave in order to preserve a safe and open environment for the rest of the
students.
Electronic Devices
Cell phones will be on silent and placed on the desk face down in front of the student at
the beginning of class. Other electronic devices such as iPods, tablets, laptops, and
gaming systems will remain in the students backpack unless they ask permission to use
them during in-class study hours.
Food and Drink
Food and drink are allowed in the classroom except for on lab days. On these days any
food or drink needs to remain in the students backpacks.
Allergies and Dietary Restrictions
If administration allows, some activities (including labs) will involve food. Please notify
me of any allergies your child may have to ensure their safety while in my class.
Leaving Class
If a student needs to leave the classroom for any reason, they will ask permission with a
hand raise or they will approach me to ask permission depending on the situation. I will
rarely if ever allow bathroom or drink breaks during instructional time. Students are
expected to take care of physical needs in between classes.
Incentives and Rewards
An increase of knowledge should be its own reward. That being said, students may
receive extra credit for additional academic work done outside of class. These
opportunities will be few and at my discretion. Extra credit will not be offered in the
last two weeks of class so please dont ask.
Tardies and Absences
If a student enters class without a note 5 minutes or more after the bell rings then it will
be counted as a tardy.
Students who are absent are responsible for getting the relevant notes and information
from their peers. I will not be providing copies of the notes.
Students are also responsible for the homework or in class work that they missed due to
absence. Extra copies of relevant worksheets, labs, etc. will be in a labeled box at the
back of the room.
Students with excused absences will get 2 school days to complete the work before it is
considered late. For example, if student missed class on Monday then the work from
that class will be due at the beginning of class on Thursday. If student missed class on
Thursday their work will be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday.
Work for students with unexcused absences will be due the following school day at the
beginning of class.
Points will not be deducted from a students final score due to absences but students
will have a better learning experience and will be more successful on tests and
assignments if they attend class.
If a student needs to be absent for an extended period of time, they and their parents need
to make arrangements with me to get their work completed.
Consequences
Student who do not Come to Class Prepared to Learn will have 5 points deducted from
their in-class assignment.
Students who are not Respectful of Our Time will be given 2 warnings and then they
will be asked to step out into the hallway and complete their work there. If they are still
being disruptive then they will be asked to go to the office.
Students who are not respecting the Safety of themselves or others will be asked to leave
and head to the office without a warning.
Students who are not Honest in their dealings with me and/or their fellow students will
be given a zero on the assignment in question and will be reported to administration.
Depending on the severity, the student may receive an automatic failing grade in the class
and further punishment from administration such as suspension or expulsion.
The Back-up Plan
In the event of a students noncompliance with the above policies and especially in
situations where I or my students are in physical danger, I reserve the right to contact the
principal and higher authorities and allow them to take whatever measures are necessary
in order to preserve a wholesome and safe environment.
I also reserve the right to refer students to the school counselor in the event that I am
witness or privy to information that I feel warrants special attention.
