Grid Portrait Directions

1. Using a 6B pencil, draw a 1 by 1 grid on your

photograph. These lines need to be really DARK in
order to see them on the dark parts of your photo.
2. Using a 2H pencil, draw an identical 1 by 1
grid on your white paper. These lines need to be
really LIGHT because they will be erased in the
end.
3. Draw the outline or contour of all the facial
features including hair and clothing on your white
paper.
4. Start with the eyes and begin erasing the boxes,
start your shading from light to dark.
5. Move on to all other facial features, saving the
hair for last.
6. In the end you should have a complete replica of
your celebrity and all the tonal values will be the
same as on the photograph.
