Sight Word Lesson

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching two sight words - "apple" and "is" - to a first grade student with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) goal of reading kindergarten sight words. The 20 minute lesson uses various activities including a video, tracing and coloring words, highlighting words in sentences, assembling word letters, and reading sentences to assess learning. The student was able to read both words easily and correctly read and match all sentences, showing they achieved the lesson objectives of reading the sight words and matching pictures to sentences. The teacher reflected on ways to further challenge the student, such as incorporating past sight words and creating original sentences.

Instructor: Jess Petty
Lesson Title: Site Words
Curriculum Area: Reading
Grade Level: 1st Grade
Date: October 5, 2015
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Standards Connection:
22.) Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
c. Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do,
does).
*IEP Goal: SG will read all kindergarten sight words.
Lesson Objective
The student will be able to read the sight words and match the picture to the sentence.
Evaluation of Learning
1. The student will read each sight word correctly 3 out of 4 times.
2. The student will match the picture to the correct sentence 3 out of 4 times.
Engagement:
The teacher will show a podcast she created to introduce the two words: apple and is. After the
video, the teacher will tell the student the sight words. Today we are going to learn to read the
words apple and is!
Lesson Design:
The teacher will show a picture of the word with the word written below it. The teacher will first
read the words to the student and show the picture. Then the student and the teacher will read the
words together. Okay friend, we are going to learn to read these words. The first word is apple.
Watch as I point and read: apple. Can you read apple with me? Apple. Awesome job! Now we
are going to learn our next work, is. Watch as I point and read, is. Can you read, is with me?
Is. Great job SG! The teacher will give the student a worksheet. It will have the words written in
bubble letterform and in regular type. The student will trace the words and then write them next
to it. After the student will color in the words and then write them next to it. Okay friend, I want
you to trace the words using a pencil or crayon. After you trace it I want you to write it on the

line next to the word. Then you will color in the words below. Then you will write the word next
to it on the line. The student will write the words. The teacher will give the student another
handout. The sheet will have many words on it. The student will have to highlight the sight
words learned. Okay friend, I have many words on this paper. I want you to use my special
highlighters and highlight our new words. Every time you see the word apple, I want you to use
this yellow highlighter. You can use this highlighter and find it. The students will find apple in
the list of words. Awesome job, SG! That was some great work! Now I want you to use this blue
highlighter to find our other word. Do you remember what our other word was? Is! Awesome
job! Use this blue highlighter to find is in this big group of words. The student will highlight the
word. Great job! That was some great highlighting! You are doing some great work! I have a few
sentences for you. I want you to try to read the words as best as you can. Focus on reading our
new words for today. Use the pictures to help you if you need. The student will read the
sentences. Great work friend! I have one final activity for you. I have all of the letters of the
word cut out. I need you to put them in the correct order and then glue it on the page. The
student will paste the letters in the correct order. Great job friend!
Closure, Review, and assess progress
The student will read the four sentences. Each sentence has a sight word in it. Each sentence has
a picture that matches as well. The student has to read the sentence and say the sight word
correctly and then match the picture to it. Okay, I have one last thing for you to do. I want you to
read these sentences. Then you will find the picture that goes with the sentence. I want you to try
your best and do good work. The student will complete the assessment.

Plans for Individual Learners

SG will be given this lesson individually. She will learn the materials in the resource
to minimize distractions.

Extensions:

If the student is able to quickly identify the words and learn them she will be
challenged to write her own sentences using the words.

Accommodations and Modifications:

The student will learn kindergarten sight words as a modification

The student will be allowed to color in the words to help her engage in lesson and
enjoy learning the new words.
The letters will be precut out for the student.

Reflection on Instructional Design:

The lesson went well. The student was able to read both of the words easily. She received a four
out of four on her assessment. She was able to read the words correctly and match the picture to
the sentence. The student self corrected with some of the words but was able to get the correct
word without prompting. To introduce the lesson I used a video that I created to introduce the
sight words. The student seemed to be engaged with the video. She repeated the phrases that
were said in the video and enjoyed the pictures. The video was a helpful way to introduce the
words and get the student curious about the lesson. The student was able to learn the words with
ease. I should have extended the lesson more to stretch her brain and challenge her. I could have
integrated more of her past sight words. We could have created sentences together using the
words she knows and wrote them out together. I could have also cut word pieces out for her to
arrange into sentences including her old sight words and the new ones learned today. This
activity would have challenged the student more and brought her learning to a higher level. As I
teach I need to be aware of how I am providing positive feedback to the students. I am good
about being positive but I need to be more specific with the student on what I am excited about
and why she is doing a great job. I needed to tell her that she did a great job paying attention and
sitting up correctly. I should have also mentioned that she did a great job of doing her best work
in every assignment. These praises would help the student see the value in good behavior. It will
also encourage her to always act properly and do her best work in every assignment. I need to
identify the good behaviors specifically and quickly to help the student to learn to be a good
worker all of the time. Overall the lesson went well. The student was able to learn the new sight
words. She enjoyed all of the different activities. She liked coloring the words and gluing the
letters on the paper. These are activities she does frequently with Mrs. Huber in her classroom.
She was able to stay engaged throughout the whole time and did great work.
