Importance of Intentions
The very first Hadīth in the authentic book of al-Bukharī is that,
Actions are dependent upon intentions [inna-ma a’mālu bin-niyyah].1
One receives reward for an action [‘amal] that is carried out to please Allāh Almighty. On the
other hand, if that same action is carried out for the purpose of ostentation [riya] it will engender
sin. Contrary to both of the positions above, if the action is performed without an intention, one
will not reap reward nor will he gain any sins, provided that the action itself is Mubah
[Permissible]. For example, if one does not make an intention before consuming something
Halāl [Lawful], like ice cream or dessert, one will not be rewarded nor will he be punished.
However, on the Day of Judgment, there will be accountability for the actions. The Authority
[Mukhtār] and Master [Mālik] of Both Worlds, Sayyidunā RasûlAllâh şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam has
declared that,
There is accountability in its Halāl [Lawful] and punishment [‘ażab] in its Haram
[Forbidden] [hala-luha hisabuw-wa harāmuha iqabun].2
