tobecomeSenatorofIllinois.Douglaswontheelectionbasedonhispropopularsovereignty
stance,butalsodividedtheDemocraticPartyduetohisviewsonthe
DredScott
decision.
Despitetheloss,Lincolngainednationalfame
JohnBrown,believingthathewasfollowingGodsorders,ledaraidonafederalarsenalat
HarpersFerry,Virginia.Hewastryingtostartaslaverebellion,buthewascaptured(after2
days),triedfortreason,andhanged.

ImportantPeopleoftheCivilWar&Reconstruction
DuringtheFirstBattleofBullRun,ConfederateGeneralThomasJacksonfoughtsoheroically
andstoodhisgroundlikeastonewall.HelaterbecameknownasStonewallJackson.
PhilipBazaarandWilliamCarneyweregiventheMedalofHonorfortheirheroismandbravery
duringtheCivilWar.
JuliaWardHowewroteBattleHymnoftheRepublic,whichwassungbyUniontroopsduring
theCivilWar.
JohnWilkesBoothassassinatedAbrahamLincolnin1865.
HiramRhodesRevelswasthefirstAfricanAmericanelectedtotheU.S.Senate.

Reconstruction
