THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
ABSTRACT
This research paper was written to teach students awareness about different genocides
around the world. Today, genocides are not being taught as much, so students are not as aware of
their history. Every person should know at least one genocide that happened in the past. The past
is such a precious thing. Societies today should be take advantage of the opportunity to learn
from it. But, by having the knowledge of what happened in the past helps shape a better future.
The writer chose three genocides to focus on, which are the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide,
and the Rwandan Genocide. Each genocide has a different factor that plays a role in why it
started and why the victims were targeted. The factors that define a genocide are political,
economical, and social factors. These factors will be explained and analyzed throughout this
paper to prove that most to every genocide includes one of these factors, even though it may
influence each event differently. This paper is written so that anyone could read it and understand
the main parts each genocide.
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
The Source of Genocide: What is the source of Genocide and how are the victims targeted?
INTRODUCTION
History is important to know. No one should dwell in the past, but they should at least
know it. History contains momentous events that formed the world as it is today. There are
astonishingly significant events that happened, but there are also horrific events in history. One
of the main horrific events is genocides. Genocide occurs due to political, economic, and social
factors. Victims seem to be targeted because of their ethnicity, religion, or socio economic
standings. Genocides are not fun to learn, but everyone should learn about each genocide.
Genocide is defined as the deliberate killing of people who belong to a particular racial,
political, or cultural group (Genocide. (n.d.)). This paper is going to focus more on certain past
genocides. Those genocides are the Holocaust, the Genocide of Armenia, and Rwanda. Each of
these genocides occurred in different parts of the world. Their specific causes differ. The
Holocaust was a major genocide during War World II. This was perpetrated by a German group,
called the Nazis. The Ottoman Empire is responsible for the Armenian Genocide in the early
1900s. The Rwandan Genocide happened in the late 1900s, in Africa. Though out this paper, it
will show the global perspective of the different genocides that happened.
Each genocide holds a legacy that will hopefully live forever. Today people are not so
aware of what happened in the past. In schools, many students are not learning in depth about
genocides as making them less aware. History is taught for a reason. It is essential to learn about
the past is so that people do not make the same mistakes. The main reason why these genocides
are especially important to learn about is that a part of their legacy is dying off. That legacy is the
survivors. After the genocide, the survivors were not open about the past, it terrified them. It took
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
many years to finally open up to the public about their personal stories. In a few years, who
knows how many will be left. This is why genocides are different than any other piece of history.
Genocides affected others in a way that cannot be explained.
LIMITATIONS OF STUDY
In this paper there were many limitations, but the main restraints were the geographic
locations and the time constraints. The Author of this paper intends to find stories of people who
were actually involved or witnessed these horrific events. Also, to conduct surveys on the
awareness of genocides, research on this topic from different sources, and find oral histories,
such as interviews. In contrast, the writer does not intend to write this paper with much bias,
since it is a research paper.
One of the main limitations of this paper is the geographic location. This paper is based
on three specific genocides in different areas of the world. So, it would be difficult to travel to
each place. By not being able to actually visit these places, it makes it so that the writer will not
be able to get a hands-on feel for the location of study. Visiting a different country makes people
more culturally aware.
Another limitation of this paper was time. Since this paper is about different genocides, it
makes it difficult to actually know what it would feel like to live in the time period the genocides
occurred. Every time period comes with different mindsets and morals of people. In writing this
paper, one of the time restraints of this paper was the due dates. The due date limits the amount
of time to research this topic. Then there are surveys to find original research on the awareness of
genocides, WHICH take time to get feed back. Another time restraint is trying to find survivors,
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
witnesses, and historians to give their input on this topic for the paper. The hardest part is the
survivors stories, because some are still not open with their history.
METHODOLOGY
The writer of this research paper employed qualitative research methods more than
quantitative research. The reason is because this paper is more about the history of the Holocaust,
Armenian Genocide, and Rwandan Genocide, and then connect the factors of each society to the
causes of most genocides. History can be changed to make an opinion, but it is not the truth. This
paper will be as truthful and correct as the sources will be. This is why the paper is qualitative
research.
The main focus of this paper is to bring awareness of this subject, and to prove that this
subject is not being taught about sufficiently. In order to prove that, the writer conducted original
research about her schools knowledge and awareness of genocides. The survey will be given out
to all students Tallwood High School, and will be anonymous. Hopefully, the diversity of
students at Tallwood High School will represent a good cross section. Overall, this survey will
provide statistics on the levels of awareness on genocide.
The data collected for research is offered by numerous data bases, provided by Virginia
Beach Public Schools. Also, genocide research centers, like the World without Genocide and
History. Com. Another main source the writer used primary sources related to genocide. For
instance, Hitlers memoir, Mein Kampf, of why the Jewish people should be exterminated in
order for Germany to gain power.
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
LITERATURE REVIEW
Adolf Hitlers first memoir was written directly about why Germany should be against
the Jewish people. His memoir was called Mein Kampf, which means the Struggle in English. As
a summary, he rants about why the Jewish people and others who are not pure German are the
reason why everything gets corrupted. He uses the Jews to explain why Germany lost most of
their wars, why their economy was corrupt, why they do not have a military, and more. In this
memoir, Hitler started to get many followers, because he was one of the only people who
actually knew what he wanted and had a plan. The only good quality about Hitler is that he is a
good public speaker, and he made that happen by writing numerous speeches, but this one was
the most famous.
The CIA World Factbook is a key data base for studying about the different factors about
countries all around the world. By using this source, it made it easier to find out the background
information about a country that a person would need to know. It includes information on the
type of government, ethnicities, and religions that the population held. In this paper, the CIA
World Factbook was used to find the background information for the countries involved in the
different genocides, like Armenia, Rwanda, and Germany.
The website History.com is a reliable source. This corporation is made to document most
to everything that happened in the past, from genocide to treaties. They pull the information from
original research, historians, and primary sources. The History organization is educational, and
used numerous schools. This source helped provide much of the information that was needed
about all the genocides in this research paper. The company, History, has a limited bias, when
recording the past. Their goal is to find the truth. They are straight to the point when teaching
history, so that the reader gets the knowledge that is needed.

THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
There isnt an actual source that will tell why the Hutu people chose the Tutsi to be
exterminated in their society. But, evidence suggests that the factors leading up to this genocide
was because they were the minority. That led to the conclusion that this genocide started because
of the ethnicity differences, between the Hutu and Tutsi.
There was a survey conducted as part of the research paper by the writer. The survey
contained three questions that asked students questions about their knowledge of genocide, and
which genocides they have learned about. The purpose of the survey was to provide statistics of
the levels of awareness on this subject. This survey was completed by students of Tallwood High
School, has a diverse student body. This diversity should provide valid statistical results.
DISSCUSSION
THE HOLOCAUST
Before the Germans started their invasions in September 1939 in Poland, there was the
Kristallnacht. The Kristallnacht translation is Night of Crystal or otherwise called The Night
of Broken Glass. This event took place on night of November ninth and tenth, in which German
troops and civilians broke glass windows in possession of the Jews. The Kristallnacht had taken
place in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Sudetenland (Kristallnacht. 2015). The Nazi
Party took Jewish people from their homes and put them in ghettoes. The definition of ghetto
is a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to liveor a quarter of a city in which
members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure
(Ghetto. (n.d.).).
After Poland, they captured France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, and
Denmark (The Holocaust. 2009). The Holocaust persecuted around 6 million Jews, and
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
furthermore the gypsies and homosexuals. Most of the mass killing camps, also know as
concentration camps, were built in the occupied area of Poland (The Holocaust. 2009). A popular
term during this time period was Anti-Semitism.
The group that carried out this genocide was the Nazi Regime. Nazi party stands for the
National Socialist German Workers' Party. The leader of the Nazi party was Adolf Hitler. He was
originally from Austria. When he moved to Germany from Austria, Hitler joined the army during
WWI. After Germanys defeat, he joined the Nazi party. He was later imprisoned for many years,
due to his participation in the Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler was against the Jews from the start. No
one is sure what the real reason why, there are rumors that his mothers doctor was Jewish and
didnt help her to his fullest potential. Another rumor was that he just used the Jews as an excuse
of why the Germans lost the war. Hitler was very ethnocentric, because his main belief is the
superiority of the pure Germans (The Holocaust. 2009). Adolf Hitlers first memoir was
written directly about why Germany should be against the Jewish people. This is an excerpt from
his memoir called Mein Kampf, which means the Struggle in English.
Was there any form of filth or profligacy, particularly in cultural life, without at least one
Jew involved in it? If you cut even cautiously into such an abscess, you found, like a
maggot in a rotting body, often dazzled by the sudden light - a kike! (Hitler, A. (n.d.).
Mein Kampf)
Because of this memoir, Hitler started to get many followers, because he was one of the only
people who actually knew what he what he wanted and had a plan. After World War I, Germany
was not in good economic or political shape at all. Their government, economy, and military was
completely gone, since they lost WWI. The Germans were easily persuaded at this time, because
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
of having a power drought. After their President passed away, Hitler anointed himself to become
ruler (The Holocaust. 2009).
As the Allied powers were winning the war, the genocide started to slow down. They
were winning back the countries that were under possession of the Nazi Party. On June 6th, 1944,
Allied powers won the war on D-day. When Hitler heard the news that the Germans lost on DDay, he fled into hiding. He committed suicide the next day, so that he would not have to face
punishment for what he had done to others. Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945 (The
Holocaust. 2009). It still took time to liberate all the victims of the genocide, but many of the
survivors, chose to migrate to different countries after being rescued. The Holocaust was one of
the most memorable genocides, because it was had the most deaths than any other genocide. It
will forever be remembered in history.
THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
Most people do not know much information about Armenia, since it is a small country.
Armenia is located in Southwestern Asia in between Turkey and Azerbaijan (Armenia 2015). As
of 2011, 97.9% of the population is Armenian, and the rest is either Yezidi or unknown. The
Yezidi are also known as Yazidi. They are an Islamic Kurdish speaking community that is a
minority in most countries they live in (Hafiz, Y. 2014). The most common religion in Armenia is
the Armenian Apostolic. The Armenian Apostolic is a form of Christianity in their community.
The form of government they have is the republic. This type of government consists of two
people that are elected as a representative and a leader (Armenian Genocide. 2013). They
officially got their own government shortly after the genocide had ended.
10
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
The Armenian genocide took place in Armenia by the Ottoman Empire, which today is
Turkey. The Ottoman Empire was Muslim in the Balkan region in the Middle East. Due to the
religious and ethnic factors the Armenian Genocide started. Armenia was the first nation to adopt
Christianity as their official religion, which caused numerous complications. These
complications were caused because of the different empires religions and ethnicities that were in
control of Armenia at different times. Back then, Armenia did not have an official government. It
was controlled by various empires throughout the years. The Persians, Greeks, Romans,
Byzantines, Arabs, and Mongols all controlled the region at different times in history (Armenian
Genocide. 2013). So, this shows that Armenia was not an independent country and could easily
be taken over.
During the 11th century, Armenia went through a switch of who was in control. The
Muslim Turks had been in control of Armenia for about one hundred years, until the Ottoman
Empire invaded. Even, before the Ottoman Empire took control, the Armenians were looked
down upon by the Muslim Turks, because of their political and ethnic differences. The Turks
were Muslim and the Native Armenians were Christian. These differences were destined to cause
conflicts. The genocide started small with the government going against the Christians through
taxes and political unfairness. Eventually, the Ottoman Empire started to have violent riots and
targeted the Armenians (Armenian).
When the Ottoman Empire started to decline in the 1800s, the Armenians and the Arabs
were still under their control. The Ottomans officially surrendered to the Allies in 1918, and the
leaders fled to Germany. The Ottoman Empire chose Germany out of all the other European
countries is because Germany made an agreement to not prosecute the Turks for what they have
done. Years later, there was a rumor about a group associated with the Armenian Nationalists that
11
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
created a plan to assassinate the leaders of the Genocide. No one is sure if the plan went through
(Staff, H. (2010).
The remnants of the Ottoman Empire, which today is the country of Turkey, has been
denying the genocide. Since the United States and Turkey are allies, the U.S. did not approve of
Turkeys denial. Later in 2010, the U.S. Congress held a panel to vote if the Armenian Genocide
should be recognized, and the outcome was that it should. The genocide was recorded to be
officially over in 1922 (Staff, H. (2010). 1.5 million Armenians were deported and massacred
during this genocide (Armenian Genocide. 2013). This genocide will be remembered.
THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE
Rwanda is a country located in Central Africa. It is found next to the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. The ethnicities have not changed over the years. The majority of the
population is Hutu, which is 84% of the population, and the rest is the minority which is the Tutsi
(C. (2015). Rwanda.). The official religion of Rwanda is Christianity. The most popular forms of
Christianity in Rwanda are the Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Their government today is
a republic, consisting of a president and another representative.
The Rwandan genocide is also known as the 1994 mass slaughter in Rwanda. This
genocide was performed by the Hutu people, and the victims were the Tutsi. This horrific event
started in April 1994 and lasted about one hundred days. It ended in mid-July, with the defeat of
the Hutu Power. The factors that led to this genocide were ethnic and social differences.
Before this genocide started, Rwanda had several difficulties within their country, due to
War World I. After that war, the other countries were power hungry and Rwanda was still using
their colonial system, which made it easier for others to take advantage of them. Before the Hutu
12
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
Revolution in 1959, the Belgians were in control. The Belgians treated the Tutsis with more
respect than the Hutus. This is one of the main reasons why the Hutus had a revolution, because
they disagreed with the way the Belgians treated the Hutus. When the revolution started,
thousands of the Tutsis fled, because they knew what would happen to them if they stayed. This
caused the Tutsis to become an even smaller race. The event of the Hutus taking over the
government and the country was the start of this genocide.
A word that would describe the Hutus is ethnocentric. The definition for the word
ethnocentric is having or based on the idea that your own group or culture is better or more
important than others (Ethnocentric. (n.d.).). Having that kind of mindset shows that the Hutus
targeted the Tutsi because they came from a different ancestry than their own. The violence of
the Hutu leaders created a political vacuum. (History.com, S. (2009)) They lusted for power,
and if something got in their way they would do anything. So, in order for them to have total
control, their plan was to get rid of any leader that was not a part of their group of extremists.
Around eight-hundred thousand traditional Tutsi were murdered during this time period.
They massacred so many people though violent riots, government outbursts, and various
broadcasts telling civilians to kill innocent people. (History.com, S. (2009)) There were two
major parties involved in this genocide. One was the Habyarimanas NRMD party and the other
was the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). The Habyarimanas NRMD party was the group that the
Hutu people created to perform this genocide. The Rwandan Patriotic Front was formed to end
the genocide and protect the Tutsis. After the genocide was in progress and killed several
innocent Tutsi people, the Rwandan Patriotic Front finally stepped in and defeated the Hutu
regime. (Rwandan Genocide. (n.d.).) The Hutu party that was in control fled to different
countries in Africa. The goal of the Rwandan Patriotic Front was to create a constitution that
13
THE SOURCE OF GENOCIDE
would make the government of Rwanda more politically fair to whomever is a resident in the
country. World without Genocide stated, According to the 1991 national census, the total
population of Rwanda was 7.7 million, with 90 percent of the population in the Hutu ethnic
group, 9 percent Tutsi, and 1 percent Twa (Rwandan Genocide. (n.d.)). The Twa are pare of the
pygmy people that live in different regions of Africa (Jaide, D. 2013). Pygmy is an ethnic group
that are most likely minorities where ever they live. This shows that after the genocide, the
population of the Tutsi still have not recovered from the genocide.
CONCLUSION
Most of these genocides were caused due to the shifts in power after World War I. Each
country either had political, economic, or social complications. Victims were either targeted,
because of their ethnicity, religion, or socio economic standings. The Holocaust was started
because the social and political standings of the country. The victims of the Holocaust were the
Jewish people and the not pure Germans, and they were selected because of their religions and
their ethnicities were different than the natives. In the Armenian Genocide, the source of it was
political and religious. The Armenians were targeted by the Ottomans for the difference in
theocracies. Lastly, the Rwandan Genocide started due to ethnicity differences. Overall, the
people who performed the genocides blamed their problems on the minorities in their societies.
No country wanted to take the responsibility for their problems.
