The story is about a beautiful girl who lives with her mother in a village. The girl is lazy and does not like to help her mother. One day, when they go to the market, the girl asks her mother to walk behind her and tells others that her mother is her servant. When people keep asking who the woman behind her is, the girl keeps saying it is her servant. Unable to bear the pain, the mother prays for the girl to be punished. God answers her prayer and the girl's body slowly turns to stone until she is completely a stone crying statue.

The Crying Stone

In a small village, a girl lives with her mother. The girl is very beautiful. Everyday she puts
make-up and wears her best clothes. She doesnt like to help her mother work in a field. The
girl is very lazy.

One day, the mother asks the girl to accompany her to go to the market to buy some food.
At first the girl refuses, but the mother persuades her by saying they are going to buy new
clothes. The girl finally agrees. But she asks her mother to walk behind her. She doesnt
want to walk side by side with her mother. Although her mother is very sad, she agrees to
walk behind her daughter.

On the way to the market, everybody admires the girls beauty. They are also curious.
Behind the beautiful girl, there is an old woman with a simple dress. The girl and her mother
look very different!

Hello, pretty lady. Who is the woman behind you? asks them.

She is my servant, answers the girl.

The mother is very sad, but she doesnt say anything.

The girl and the mother meet other people. Again they ask who the woman behind the
beautiful girl. Again the girl answers that her mother is her servant. She always says that her
mother is her servant every time they meet people.

At last, the mother cannot hold the pain anymore. She prays to God to punish her daughter.
God answers her prayer. Slowly, the girls leg turns into stone. The process continues to the
upper part of the girls body. The girl is very panicky.

Mother, please forgive me! she cries and ask her mother to forgive her.

But its too late. Her whole body finally becomes a big stone. Until now people still can see
tears falling down the stone. People then call it the crying stone or batu menangis.

The Crying Stone adalah sebuah cerita pendek dari Kalimantan, Indonesia. Cerita ini
bertema tentang seorang anak gadis yang durhaka terhadap Ibunya. Alur yang terdapat dalam
cerita ini adalah alur maju, karena menceritakan sang gadis yang awalnya manusia lalu dikutuk
menjadi batu. Konflik utama dalam cerita ini adalah sang gadis yang tidak hormat dan
menghargai Ibunya sendiri, klimaksnya ketika sang Ibu sudah tak bisa menahan rasa sakit
hatinya sehingga mengutuk sang gadis menjadi batu, penyelesaian cerita ketika sang gadis
mulai menangis meminta ampun dari sang Ibu saat seluruh tubuhnya perlahan berubah menjadi
batu, ia terus menangis bahkan sampai sudah berubah menjadi batu seutuhnya.
Sudut pandang dalam cerita ini adalah orang ketiga serba tahu. Tokoh sang Gadis
memiliki watak yang sombong, pemalas, manja, dan durhaka. Tokoh sang Ibu memiliki watak
baik, sabar, pekerja keras. Latar tempat dalam cerita ini adalah di rumah, di pasar, dan di Desa.
Amanat cerita ini adalah jangan pernah menyakiti hati kedua orang tua, terutama Ibu
karena doa seorang Ibu selalu dijabah Tuhan. Dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa Setiap ucapan
orang tua adalah doa. Kita tidak boleh berlaku tidak sopan dan tidak hormat kepada Orang Tua,
dan segera minta maaf jika telah menyakiti hati orang tua sebelum terlambat.
