Phlebotomy and Patient Care
April 21st 2010
Whats your idea on venipucture and could this be for you?
Are you looking for a fun job that gets your adrenalin rushing? Phlebotomy is a
fun interesting job where you can work with people of all ages and in many different
areas. The options are endless, if you wanted something more calm and didn’t want to
deal with children then you could work on a blood mobile or in a plasma center. If you’re
interested in something faster paced and intense, working on the floor in a hospital on the
intensive care unit or in a pediatrics unit would be the best fit for you.
Phlebotomy and its opportunities
Most people, when they hear about phlebotomy they get nervous about going to
school for something like that. The main worry with this is that people fear they won’t
find a job in this field because it’s something you can work in without getting a degree
for. But the turnover rate for someone who goes to school for phlebotomy is almost 100
percent. Phlebotomy can be a very interesting job and can open up a door in the health
care field for advancement in not only phlebotomy but other careers as well.
Phlebotomists may advance to phlebotomy facilitator or supervisory positions as said by

Phlebotomy is a growing career and there are many different options for work placement
as well as very flexible hours. Phlebotomists work usually a twelve hour shift and work
from early in the morning to getting off later in the afternoon or work overnight shifts as
well as split shifts. The great thing about phlebotomy is its placement options, you can
work in numerous different areas and learn different things in each area For example you
can work in a hospital, a blood bank, a plasma center, a blood mobile, or you can work in

different units in a hospital depending on your comfort level. For me personally I would
find it very hard to draw blood from a child’s veins and so I would want to stay away
from pediatric units and maybe find a career in a blood mobile or plasma center.
Skills needed for a phlebotomist
When being a phlebotomist you need skills in organization and you need to be
able to perform the duties of a phlebotomist. The duties of a phlebotomist include, being
able to collect a blood specimen, process a urine sample, properly identify patients, label
correction tubes, being able to get blood from a finger poke and provide patient care as
well as doing this in as sterile environment. Other basic skills are spinning the blood in a
centrifuge and making sure they use the right collection tube for test needed. As a
phlebotomist you deal with a lot of cranky people, which is very understandable sense
most people are woken up at 4 in the morning to get there blood drawn, but you need to
be able to take constructive criticism and be able to control emotions while on the job.
Phlebotomy and its Advancements
Phlebotomy is a very interesting career and as a phlebotomist you have plenty of
room for advancement. You can get a position as supervisor over your department or after
working in a hospital for a year you can be placed on a blood mobile and in the long run
you could go as far as becoming supervisor of the blood mobile.
As far s phlebotomy goes I think it’s a great career for people to get into, it’s a
chance to get your feet wet in the health care field where you’re not spending a lot of
money to do so. Phlebotomy gives you a chance to work in the health care field and be
able to view other jobs at the hospital that could interest you.
