The Catcher in the Rye Group Project

As we conclude our study of the novel, you will be assessed as a group of 3-4 people.
Should you desire to work on your own, you can instead write a Macro Essay on the
prompt below. All projects will be due on _____________________________________. You will
receive a test grade for your efforts.
Micro Essay Prompt: Explain how Holdens intense anxieties hold him back. This must
be typed.
GROUP PROJECTS (All students will need to be involved and complete an exit assignment
detailing their involvement in the project).
Create Visual Representations of 3-4 Characters Each visual representation must
be accompanied by at least a single paragraph explaining the artistic choices made. The
paragraph must also include textual evidence from the novel that supports artistic
choices.
Create a PowerPoint Presentation of 3-4 New England Boarding Schools The
presentation must include at least three slides on each school and cover the following
points at a minimum:
What is student life like?
What attracts students to this school?
What are the admissions requirements?
What are the racial, socio-economic, and gender demographics of the school?
What is the cost of attendance?
Ensure your slides include interesting visuals (photos, video clips, etc.)
Write, Cast, and Film a Scene from the Novel Select a scene and film it. This is the
most tech-heavy option, and you must realize that Mr. Gaffney is not particularly techsavy. Ensure that at least one person in your group has knowledge of filming and editing
software.
The Tool of a Madmen PowerPoint Presentation Write a research project covering
the following: John Hinckley, who attempted an assassination of President Ronald Reagan
in 1981, and Mark David Chapman, who murdered John Lennon in 1980, both brought
The Catcher in the Rye into the national spotlight. Hinckley told the court that his
defense could be found in the novels pages, while Chapman had asked Lennon to sign
his copy of the book earlier in the same day he killed him. Find what you can about both
of these instances how was The Catcher in the Rye involved in each? Are there other
murderers who identify with the novel? Analyze Holdens criminal potential based on
sound criminal psychology that you researched. Each student should create at least
three slides.
The Soundtrack Make a ten song mixed CD for Holden Caulfield, the movie. This could
be in the past or present. In the liner notes (or in a letter to Holden), explain why you
are including each of the ten songs on the mixed tape. Each song should have a
paragraph of an in-depth analysis/explication/description that explains its connection to
the novel, using evidence such as: themes, symbols, motifs, and situations that Holden
and the novel explore. You should use text based evidence (TBE quotes from the

novel). You must also design a cover for your CD. You pick and choose which elements
of the music to connect to the novel. Be artistic. The final product should look like
something you would buy in a store.
