Stem Cell Therapy and Bone Marrow Transplants

Stem cell therapy promotes regeneration by growing stem cells that can replace damaged tissues and organs. The most common use is bone marrow transplantation, where stem cells from bone marrow are transfused to replace those destroyed by chemotherapy. There are several types of stem cell donors for transplantation, including siblings, parents, identical twins, and a patient's own cells collected prior to treatment. The transfused stem cells engraft in the bone marrow and begin producing new blood cells, helping thousands suffering from blood cancers to recover. However, there are risks of immune rejection that require long-term immune suppression drugs to prevent the transplanted cells from being attacked.

Stem cell therapy, other name (Regenerative Medicine), it promotes the regenerative

response and replace virtually any tissue or organ that is injured or damaged. The researchers
grow stem cell in a laboratory ,these stem cells such as heart muscle cell, blood cell or nerve
cells. And the most common use stem cell therapy is the bone marrow transplant. Blood-forming
cells in the bone marrow were the first stem cells to be identified and were the first to be used.
This life-saving therapy has helped thousands of people worldwide who had been suffering from
the blood cancers such leukemia and lymphoma. And also, will be useful in person with
autoimmune disease.
The bone marrow transplantation is a procedure that replace stem cell that have been
destroyed by high dose of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Because these treatments are
damaging to bone marrow cell, without the replacement of blood-forming stem cell function
through transplantation the client would die of infection or hemorrhage.
There are types of donor stem cell namely, allogeneic; the stem cell donor is usually
siblings, parents with similar tissue type. Syngeneic, the stem cells is from an identical twin.
Autologous, the most common stem cell type, the client receives his/her own stem cells. During
the transplantation, stem cells are administered through the clients central line in a manner
similar to blood transfusion.
When the stem cell therapy is done, there is a risk of immune rejection from stem cell
because transplanted stem cells, like any transplanted organ, can be recognized by the immune
system as foreign and then rejected. In organ transplants such as liver, kidney, or heart, people
must be on immune suppressive drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent the immune system
from recognizing that organ as foreign and destroying it. Lastly the stage of engraftment were the
transfused stem cells move to the bone marrow forming site of the bone and then the white blood
cell, erythrocyte and platelet count begin to rise. The moment when engraftment occur, the
person is now on the recovering stage.
