TIC CES-116A ADF SIGNAL SIMULATOR or FEATURES: ‘Accurate Bearings at All Angles © No Screen Room Required Double RF Shielding ‘© Adapters for ALL Makes of ADF Portable — Light Weight Meets Relevant FAA Specs Fixed Sense Antenna Adapters (No Adjustments) \ccepted by Receiver Manufacturers Accepted by Airlines for 13 Years \ccepted by Air Frame Manufacturers Calibrated Field Strengths eeeeee DESCRIPTION: In order to check the bearing accuracy and loop set tivity of an Avionics ADF receiver, itis necessary to have an RF field of known magnitude and ditection, The only satis- factory method in the past was to sot up a radiating transmis- sion line in a large shielded room (approximately 9" x 12'x 12'), Various attempts were made in the past to make considerably. smaller enclosures that could be used on a test bench, but most of these were satisfactory only for O° beatings, and then. only where there were no nearby powerful broadcast stations. The TIC CES-116A ADF Simulator has been designed to climinate the shortcomings of previous designs. By using @ large internal circular drum (Fig. 1) instead of a rectangular box, it has been possible to provide a uniform field which does not change as the exciting antenna is rotated. In addition, ficld rotation is linearly related to antenna rotation allowing a calibrated dial to be supplied for bearing accuracy checks. All units are factory checked around the compass. Most simulators in the past have used a eapacity-divider to provide sense antenna voltage. The calibration of these SPECIFICATIONS ROOM FACTOR: 5 (An input to the CES-116A of 5000 microvolts will provide an internal field of 1000 mierovolts/meter.) SENSE ANTENNA OUTPUT (FRONT PANEL): hhe = I meter, Zo = 50 Ohms SENSE ANTENNA OUTPUT (TO RECEIVER): he = 0.1 LO meter. AU provided in sense antenna matching box designed for each receive nator and dummy antenna BEARING CALIBRATION: Every ¥° over 360° range INPUT IMPEDANCE: 50 Ohms FREQUENCY RANGE: 100 ke - 3 me ACCESSORIES SUPPLIED: 1 - 4 ft. BNC/BNC double shielded coax cable (Sig, Gen/CES-116A) dividers could only be set up and checked by substitution measurements, or from a calibration chart (of doubtful accu- racy). In the TIC CES-116A, two precision resistive dividers are used. One, in the simulator, provides a signal equivalent to that picked up by a sense antenna of 1 meter equivalent height while the other, in a sense antenna matching box at the end of ‘terminated cable, is designed for the effective height specified by the manufacturer of the receiver. This box also contains tiie Standard Dummy Antenna specified by the receiver manv- facturer. A short, permanently attached cable comes out of the box and is provided with the proper connector for the patticular receiver. Mounting plate and matching boxes are available from the factory for all old and new ADF receivers, fr they may be easily made in the field. Double RF shielding (box within 2 box) construction has been employed in the TIC CES-116A to allow operation even in proximity to powerful broadcast stations. In general, the limitation will be found to be pick-up in the shielded cables connecting to the receiver. 1-4 ft.
