General Reflection
Since the beginning of the school year, I have, as a whole, changed dynamically. In
middle school and elementary school, I used to go through books so fast, finishing 3 a week. All
of those genres I read were either science fiction, fantasy, or horror. As I transitioned from HELA
9 to HELA 10, I found that the books weve read in the course have introduced me to a whole to
side of literacy I had never previously been interested in. Books this semester have introduced
me to more classic category style books with deeper context. For example, To Kill A
Mockingbird is comparatively easier to decipher than that of Catcher In the Rye. In addition to
improving as a reader, able to understand messages the author(s) want to convey easier, this
experience have helped me find out the type of literary preferences I prefer.
Another way I have matured as an English student is through my writing. Compared to
HELA 9, this year there was considerably more writing that needed to be done. I think this
particular aspect of the curriculum shaped me the most and really sharpened my skills in essay
writing. I used to have a vague idea of what I needed to write but unable to formulate it into a
fluent essay. Now, because of all the practice, my ideas have become increasingly organized and
just better overall. Another helpful writing takeaway from this class was learning how to write a
rhetorical precis. The organization and repetitive need of rhetorical prcises actually helped me
understand what it was I was writing about better. It also taught me how to get a point across
without using excessive filler words in a few sentences. Not only that, but I learned how to write
a good persuasive essay using the technique of ethos, logos, and pathos
Furthermore, aside from writing and reading, I have honed my speaking skills. Through
Socratic seminars, I have learned how to build off other peoples ideas, or my own, without
having to spend excessive time developing ideas. Hearing other peoples interpretations not only
helped share different perspectives, but it also helped me to think about connecting ideas to
synthesize new ones. Usually this doesnt happen with other types of learning because I am an
auditory learner. What makes semester two more academically successful for me than semester
one is the size of the Socratic groups. In Mrs. Grimaldis class, the circles were only separated
into groups of two, whereas in this class the class in is 4+ divisions. I think this really helped
with the communication between students and allowed a faster exchange of ideas. Although this
helped me a lot, I feel as though I could have been more involved and had quicker thinking
during discussions.
It is an understatement to say that I am excited and terrified for AP Lang next year.
However, despite the hype for this new difficult course, there is actually a lot I hope to learn
that I did not learn this year. I hope to begin deviating from the typical essay structure and begin
using different and more effective formats. I also want to be able to execute my timed writes
without blanking for the first forty minutes and then cramming all my words onto paper in the
last ten minutes. That included, I would love to work on anything involving oral reports to
improve on my public speaking, as it is something I plan to continue in the future. Not only do I
aspire to get a 5 on the AP test, I hope that my Language skills build profound to assist me for AP
Lit and the college course I will take senior year.
