Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species are known to produce metallo beta-lactamases (MBLs) that confer resistance to carbapenems. This doctoral thesis characterized the MBLs produced by P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species isolated from patients at a tertiary care hospital in India. Molecular techniques were used to identify the MBL genes in the bacterial isolates in order to understand the resistance mechanisms and inform treatment options.
