Factors and Multiples


A factor is a number multiplied by another number to find a
product. For example, 3 and 5 are factors of 15. The number 15
is a multiple of 5 and 3, because 3 5 15.
Use arrays to find all the factors of 6.

List the first ten multiples of 8.

Make an array with 6 squares.

Multiply 8 by the numbers 1 through 10.

List each product.

This array contains 2 rows of 3 squares
each. So 2 and 3 are both factors of 6.
Make a different array with 6 squares.

So, the first ten multiples of 8 are:


8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80.

An array with 1 row of 6 contains 6
squares. So 1 and 6 are both factors of 6.
So, the factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6.
