Isotonic Solution

An isotonic solution has the same salt concentration as normal cells and blood. It will not cause cells to swell or shrink when absorbed. An isotonic beverage can replace fluids and minerals lost during physical activity. Common isotonic solutions used in treatment are normal saline and lactated ringers, which have osmolalities close to extracellular fluids and serum. They remain in the intravascular compartment without causing fluid flow in or out of cells.

Isotonic Solution

A solution that has the same salt concentration as the normal cells of the body and the blood. As opposed to a
hypertonic solution or a hypotonic solution. An isotonic beverage may be drunk to replace the fluid and
minerals which the body uses during physical activity.

TREATMENT: SOLUTIONS:
• Intravascular dehydration(running, labor, • NORMAL SALINE(0.9% NS)
fever, ect.) • LACTATED RINGERS(LR)
• Can be helpful in hypotensive or • D5W (SOME SOURCES CLASSIFY AS
hypovolemic patients. HYPOTONIC)

CONSIDERATIONS: DESCRIPTION:
*AVOID D5W in clients at risk for Increase • Have an osmolality close to extracellular
Intracranial Pressure fluids (275-295)
* There is a risk of fluid overloading, especially • Close to the same osmolarity as serum.
in patients with CHF and hypertension. • Do not cause RBC to swell or shrink
• They stay inside the intravascular
compartment, thus expanding it.

Remember that fluid flows from an area of lower concentration of molecules to an area of high concentration of
molecules (osmosis) to achieve equilibrium (fluid balance). In this example, there is no fluid flow into or out of
the intravascular space.
