An Introduction to

Jacob Johnston
My wife, Kim, and I live with our two-year-
old son in Hazlehurst, GA. I grew up here, but
my wife was born in Cleveland, OH, and grew
up near Pittsburgh, PA, and Marietta, GA. I
met Kim while attending Berry College in
northwest Georgia and lived and worked in
that area around Rome between 1998 and
2004. My wife and I moved back to my
hometown to be closer to my family when
we wanted to start a family.

I started my career as a journalist and editor

and worked for two years as a copy editor for
the Rome News-Tribune before entering the
TAPP program to earn my teaching
certificate. I worked my first two years as a
teacher in the alternative school in Rome. I guess you could call that a baptism by fire in that I
was working exclusively with children who were expelled from the regular schools or just
coming out of lock up. I taught 7th through 12th grades and often taught 9th through 12th grades
in the same room at the same time. After moving back home, I’m working in a much more
normal environment teaching 10th grade literature and remedial reading and writing courses. I
also coach tennis in the spring.

I started with the instructional technology program so that I could work as a media specialist.
My preferred area is to remain at the high school level, but I would be willing to work with
younger students. I just have very little experience with students younger than 14 years old.

Outside of school, I love backpacking. My photo is of me at Hidden Pond in the middle of the
Juniper Prairie Wilderness Area in the Ocala National Forest in Florida on New Year’s Day this
year. This summer I hiked 14 miles in a day in Death Canyon in Grand Teton National Park and
finished my first multi-night hiking trip, a three day, thirty mile hike around the Cohutta
Wilderness Area in north Georgia. I also play tennis and have played in several level 3.0 and 3.5
USTA tournaments this year. I also take any excuse to get in my car and drive that I can. I even
bought my car (a Prius) knowing that I needed maximum gas mileage to afford my habit. This
addiction leads me to think things like packing a two-year-old into a car and driving to Wyoming
from Georgia is a good idea.
