This year, patients in Rockford hospitals over the holidays will benefit from the results of a 26-year-old Grayslake
woman¶s six-year-old random act of kindness.
It was around Christmastime six years ago that Lyzzie Elliott, who has glaucoma and heart and kidney problems
related to high blood pressure for which doctors can¶t pinpoint a cause, met a girl with leukemia at Children¶s
Memorial Hospital in Chicago and gave her a tree ornament. In return, Elliott got a smile and a hug that she hasn¶t
forgotten.
³Every year, in our family, Santa ² quote, unquote ² always brought us a Christmas ornament,´ Elliott said. ³When I
saw this little girl, who had no family, scared and all alone I gave her my ornament. To see someone in so much pain
just smile for a minute, it changes your whole life and you never forget that person. We¶re still good friends today.´
That was the start of HOPE Ornaments, a project in which Elliott, her mom and a couple of friends deliver ornaments
to hospital patients during the holidays. This year, Elliott plans to deliver at least 5,000 ornaments in 39 Illinois
hospitals between Monday, Dec. 13, and Christmas Eve.
She said all three Rockford hospitals are scheduled to receive ornaments during the week of Christmas Eve, but
no specific date is set yet.
Elliott receives donations of ornaments for the project from around the country as well as Spain, Australia and
Norway but said some schools also make and donate ornaments. She accepts donations of ornaments through most of
the month of December, so there would still be time to make ornaments and donate.
Since some hospitals have restrictions that would prohibit glass or glitter, it probably would be a good idea to contact
Elliott at or
  before undertaking any big project.
Ornaments can be shipped to her at 562 Second St., Grayslake, IL 60030.
