Smart Card Basics for Tech Enthusiasts

Smart card is a small plastic card with an embedded integrated circuit chip that provides computational capability and memory storage. There are two types of smart cards: contact smart cards that require insertion into a card reader, and contactless smart cards that interact with readers through close proximity. Smart cards can be used for applications like identity verification, payments, and network access through authentication with a connected reader.

Smart card

Smart card is a small plastic intelligent token card embedded with an IC chip that makes it smart
Smart Cards provide computational capability along with memory capacity.

Smart Cards can be used with a Smart-Card Reader attachment to a personal computer to
authenticate
In 1968 German inventors patent combination of plastic cards with micro chips.

Based on the way the smart card interacts with the Reader, smart cards are of two types:

Contact Smart Cards: These require insertion into the Card reader.
Contact less Smart Cards: These require close proximity of the reader.

Contact Smart Cards

 the contact smart card consists of small contact plate on the face, which is ½’’ in
Diameter.
 The transmission of data takes place when this contact plate comes in contact with the
connector of the reader.
Contact less Smart Cards
 This card consists of an IC Chip and an antenna coil embedded into it.
 These cards are mainly used when transactions must be processed quickly
A Smart card is a portable devices that contains some non-volatile memory and a microprocessor.

• A microprocessor capable of securely storing and processing information.

• Useful for hundreds of applications

– Debit, credit, sim

– Identity, memory

This card contains some kind of an encrypted key that is compared to a secret key contained on the
user’s processor

Memory in smart card

ROM

EEPROM

RAM

data stored in EEPROM is persistent, and is kept when power is lost

data stored in RAM is transient, and is lost as soon as power is lost

Applications of Smart Cards

• IDENTIFICATION
• NETWORK ACCESS
• NETWORK SECURITY
• ELECTRONIC PURSES
• TELE COMMUNICATION
• SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

Micro controller

A microcontroller is a single-chip computer. It has internal RAM, ROM, timers, counters, interrupt
circuitry, I/O ports, analog comparators, serial USARTs, analog to digital converters, watchdog timers,
and a RISC architecture. When you are using a microprocessor, you cannot program it alone. You need
other components, like RAM, ROM, timers, etc. For programming, you should know its architecture
thoroughly: You must read the datasheet for your microcontroller
