First Man in Space

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into outer space, completing one orbit of Earth in 108 minutes aboard Vostok 1. Gagarin, the son of peasants from the Soviet Union, was selected to represent his nation on this historic first mission. After separating from Vostok 1's service module, Gagarin ejected from his capsule at 7,000 meters and parachuted to a landing near the village of Uzmoriye, completing the first manned spaceflight.
