BROOKLINE HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Members of the Class of 2014, First, let me introduce myself. My name is John M. Ritchie, and Ill be your Headmaster for this coming year. Im actually not new to Brookline, having started my career here as an English teacher way back in 1974, and eventually becoming a Housemaster, which is the equivalent of a Deans position today. Now Im back, out of retirement, to serve for one year as BHS Headmaster while the school conducts a search for a permanent Headmaster. Replacing Dr. Bob, of course, is totally impossible, and it wouldnt even be worth trying to duplicate his energy, creativity, and style. I know many of you will really miss his presence and leadership in the school, and its also clear to me that hell miss you, and he wishes you the best. Even only having been here for a summer now, Ive been reminded of how much I loved Brookline High School when I worked here, and what a special place it is. It is hard to find schools where students are actually treated as partners in the educational process, not just subjects; and where decisions and policies are always based on what is best for students, not what is easiest for adults. What I always felt about Brooklineand what was true also in the place from which I retired, Lincoln-Sudburyis that by treating students with respect, trusting them, giving them appropriate amounts of freedom, they behave better, and contribute more to the overall school culture. Ive been delighted to see that BHS continues to be a place where students feel welcomed, challenged, and cared for.

If you are new to BHS, we invite you to a new student orientation on September 6th from 10:30am-Noon in the Martin Luther King Room. Our hope is that this orientation will help with your transition to our school. I really look forward to meeting you, and also look forward to a great year together. Diane Lande

I want to keep that tradition alive here, and that means reminding you that your part of the deal is to continue to act responsibly, always try to do the right thing, treat others, and the school, well. And if and when you make mistakes, which we all do, try to take ownership and work to make things better.
