Memorandum
Dr A,fuhrer, late Archeological Surveyor to the Government of the North Western Province and
Oudh
having ceased to belong to the Government service from the 28th October 1898, the Annual
Progress
Report of the Epigraphical Section of the Archeological Survey Circle, North Western Provinces
and
Oudh , for the year ending 30th June 1899, has has been prepared by Mr V.A.Smith , I.C.S.,
who points
numerous inaccuracies in Dr Fuhrer's Progress Report for the year 1897-98, and also in his
Monograph
on Buddha Sakyamuni's birth place in the Nepalese Tarai which was published as Volume XXVI
of the list
of volumes constituting the New Imperial Series of the Report of the Archeological Survey of
India. The
latter work has been withdrawn from circulation , and all copies remaining in the store destroyed
by order
of the Government of India.
