GENERAL IN FORMA TION

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The TG3000 Gyrocompass, shown in Fig. 1.1 is the subject of

this manual. The TG3000 is compact, easy to install, maintain, operate,
and provides an accurate heading under the severe operating conditions en-
countered by sea-going vessels. The compass can be read directly or
heading data can be transmitted to Repeater Compasses located at different
parts of the ship.

This Gyrocompass will maintain high accuracy for long periods

if properly operated and maintained as explained herein.

Periodically, component parts must be repaired or replaced

due to wear and normal usage. In Such instances, follow the instructions
described in this manual. Should any difficulty arise concerning repairs
or adjustment of the Gyrocompass balancing and related functions, please
contact our field service engineers in your area to make the necessary
repairs and adjustments. When anticipating such problems, please report
your findings in detail to our field engineers, giving sufficient lead time to
save time and avoiding unnecessary expense. Keeping an operation/trouble
log for the Gyrocompass is recommended for effective operation and speedy
repairs.

1.2 DESIGN FEATURES

The TG3000 Gyrocompass employs a controlled gyroscope which

in combination with the effects of the earth's rotation and gravity, seeks and
continuously aligns itself with the meridian, pointing to true north.

A servo Follow-Up System is provided in the azimuth axis to

keep the Phantom support Element aligned with the Gyro Sensitive Element
as the vessel turns; it also drives the Compass Card and the Non-Contact
Step Transmitter for the Compass Repeaters. The Compass Card is visible
for direct reading for direct steering purpose. In addition the Horizontal
Follow-Up System is provided in the horizontal axis to keep the Gyro
Container aligned with the Gyrosphere.

1.3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The TG3000 Gyrocompass consists of two major assemblies:

The Master Compass and the Transmission Unit

1. 3.1 MASTER COMPASS

The Master Compass consists of two parts, as shown in Fig.

1.1. The compass unit which contains a controlled gyroscope, uses the
earth's rotation and gravitational effects to seek and align itself with the
meridian to point to true north. The other unit, an inverter, provides the
power necessary for the operation of the compass unit and mounts the
compass operating controls.

1.3.2 TRANSMISSION UNIT

The Transm ission Unit as shown in Fig. 1.1 is mounted on

the bulkhead and contains of the power circuits necessary to operate the
Master Compass, an alarm, power transfer circuit, and transmission
circuits to distribute the Master Compass heading data to the Repeater
Compasses. Other navigational aids such as radar, radio direction-
finder and automatic pilot also may receive this heading data. The trans-
mission circuits can serve as many as eight Repeater Compasses (Each
circuit include separate fuse and terminal block for each repeater).

There are two types of Transmission Units: PT-4 for a three

phase AC ship's power supply and PT-7 for a single phase AC ship's power
supply.

1.3.3 REPEATER COMPASS

A Sig:lal issued from the Transmission Unit may be used to

Repeater the Ships Heading wherever desired on the Ship.

With this System as many as 8 of these Repeater Compasses

may be connected to the Transmission Unit, any of which will faithfully
indicate the Ships Heading specified by the Master Compass.

1.4 DETAILED DESCRIPTION

1.4.1 MASTER COMPASS

The Master Compass consists of the compass and inverter

units (refer to Fig. 7.1).

1.4.1.1 COMPASS UNIT

The compass unit is the heart of the Gyrocompass system.

Everything in this unit has been manufactured from carefully-selected
materials into a precision, high-quality instrument. Knowledge of the
construction, operation and maintenance of the Master Compass is the
best means of assuring peak accuracy and reliability.

(1 ) Gyrosphere

The gyrosphere as shown in Fig. 7.2, is the north - seeking

part of the compass and is 108mm in diameter. The sphere is designed
and then adjusted so that its gravity is greater than its buoyancy when
immersed in silicon fluid and its center of buoyancy also coincides with its
center of gravity. Air is evacuated from the sphere and it is then partially
filled with helium which functions to dissipate motor winding heat.

The gyro wheel as shown in Fig. 7.2, is 98mm in diameter

and 30mm in thickness and is designed to operate at approximately 12,000
r.p.m. The wheel rotates on ball bearings installed between the rotor and
the stator shaft. The stator leads are routed through the stator shaft.
The gyro motor is a squirrel-cage induction motor with 3-phase windings.
The single phase Inverter power is converted within the sphere, using
capacitors to obtain the reqUired 3-phase currents.

The sphere enclosing the gyromotor consists of a frame and

two hemispherical shells. A two-conductor, metal to glass, lead-in
connector is located on the frame for the sphere power leads.

The sphere is suspended in a container by two suspension

wires which are fixed at two points in the upper position slightly above the
center of gravity.

 (2 ) Suspension Wire

The gyrosphere is suspended with suspension wires from the

upper end of the sensitive element. The suspension wires as shown in Fig.
7.3, not only support the gyrosphere but also serve as leads to feed power
to the gyro motor, and therefore each connection point is insulated.

(3 ) Sensitive Element

The sensitive element as shown in Fig. 7.4, consists of an

upper and a lower housing. This sensitive element is filled with high viscosity
silicon liquid used to partially float and damp the gyrosphere. A sintered
metal alloy plate is fitted with a regulating cap at its top to compensate
for the expanding liquid due to changes in the temperature. A tangent screw
mechanism is set at the suspension wire mounting sections to adjust the
twist of the suspension wires.

A viscous damping device is mounted at the bottom of the

lower housing, which is used to reduce errors due to the ship's rolling and
pitching. This device is de signed to control the clearance between the
gyrosphere and the hemisphere. Turning an adjusting screw raises or
lowers the hemisphere reducing the error caused by the ship's motion. It is
normally set for optimum performance at the time of m·anufacture .

A sensitive level located on the upper housingindicates the

tilt of the wheel. The graduation of the level corresponds to two minutes of
arc.

The sensitive element assembly is supported by the mounting

ring which pivots about a horizontal axis in the horizontal ring. An advantage
of this design is that the complete sensitive element may be easily removed
and replaced when servicing is required.

(4) Pickoff

The pick-off is a novel electrical device able to detect three

electrical signals; gyro tilt, azimuth follow-up system error and horizontal
follow-up system error.

The primary coils of the follow-up pickoff as shown in Fig.

7.4 are located on the north and south sides of the gyrosphere, and
the secondary coils are attached on the upper hOUSing of the sensitive element
just opposite the primary coils.

(5) Horizontal Ring

The mounting ring as shown in Fig. 7.5, to which the sensitive

element is mounted, is pivoted in the horizontal ring and the horizontal
ring is pivoted in the phantom yoke.

The horizontal servo mechanism as shown in Fig. 7.5, is

mounted on the west side of the horizontal ring to allow the sensitive element
to follow-up the gyrosphere about the horizontal axis. The amplifier for
this follow-up system is also located on the horizontal ring.

(6) Phantom Yoke

The phantom yoke as shown in Fig. 7.1, supports the

horizontal ring and sensitive element. A slip ring assembly mounted on
top of this yoke, is used to feed power and servo signals between the
moveable phantom yoke and the support plate.

The compass card is attached to the top of the shaft connected

to the yoke.

Also attached to the top of the phantom yoke is the azimuth gear
which is driven by the azimuth servo motor and gear train to maintain the
phantom yoke in alignment with the gyrosphere.

The phantom yoke moves within the support frame on two

precision ball bearings.

(7) Support Plate

A support plate as shown in Fig. 7.1, supports the phantom

yoke and serves as a mounting bracket for the azimuth follow-up amplifier,
gearing and azimuth servo motor, brush ass 'y, inductive heading transmitter,
illumination lamp and the lubber line assembly. The support plate assembly
is completely suspended by a unique shock and vibration system. This
system has been designed so that it effectively protects and isolates the
support plate assembly (Including suspended gyrosphere) from the
dynamic effects of ship's motion. It guarantees that the gyrocompass
will function properly under the adverse sea conditions often encountered
by ships at sea.

(8) Binnacle

The binnacle as shown in Fig. 7.1 houses the complete unit

and consists of a base and cover. The cover has a glass 200mm in dia-
meter through which the card is observed. Night usage is enhanced by
indirect lightingwhich can be dimmered at will.

1.4.1.2 INVERTER UNIT

The inverter unit as shown in Fig. 7.6, contains an inverter

circuit, starting sequence circuit and a switch panel.

(1) Inverter Circuit

The inverter circuit as shown in Fig. 7.6 is of the switching

regulator type. The input for this circuit is 24V DC, 4A while the
output is llOV AC, 1<6, 400Hz.

The inverter circuit design features excellent voltage and

frequency stability.

(2) Starting Sequence Circuit

The starting sequence circuit as shown in Fig. 7.6, starts

the gyrocompass.

When the main switch is set to "SLEW" position, the azimuth

follow-up systems can slew 4 minutes after the DC brake acts on the
gyro motor. If set to "RUN" position, the rotor immediately starts.
However, the two follow-up systems are unable to run for 2 minutes after
the wheel starts.

(3 ) Switch Panel

The switch panel as shown in Fig. 7.6, has a mode switch,

a dimmer and a slew switch. The mode switch has the following positions:
"SLEW", "OFF" and "RUN". The SLEW position slews the compass to
the ship's heading before the gyro wheel is energized. The RUN position
operates the compass. The dimmer adjusts the amount of light illuminating
the compass card.

1.4 .2 TRANSMISSION UNIT

The transmi ssion unit contains a power circuit, a transmission

circuit and an alarm and power transfer circuit.

Mounted on the front panel are:

A. The main power switch

A battery running indicator lamp. (In the alarm and transfer
circuit)

The interconnecting cable from the Master Compass must be

connected to the receptacle at the bottom of the unit.

The input voltage from the ship's supply is matched to the

primary of the input power transformer by connecting terminal links
between the binding posts as required. The unit permits the use of either
35- or 70-volt DC step repeaters.

1.5 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

1.5.1 NORTH SEEKING ACTION AND DAMPING ACTION

The principles of gyrocompass can be understood by reading

the classical dynamics. Therefore, to avoid going into the details of
mathematical formulations, we will continue our discussions on the assump-
tion that the users are well aware of the mechanical characteristics of
the gyroscope. The GYROSCOPE is defined as an object having a certain
mass and expanse that rotate s around a fixed point. Ordinarily, you may
consider it as a flywheel rotating with high speed. When possessing 3
axial freedom of movements, it is known as a free gyroscope. Hereafter,
we may sometimes call it a gyro rather than a gyroscope. The 3 axial
freedom of movements implies that the gyroscope can freely rotate around
3 given axe s (A, Band C in Fig. 1.5.1).

 (1) The spin axis of the gyroscope will continue to point to the
same direction as long as no torque applied from outside.

(2) When adding any outside torque, the spin axis will start
rotating at an angle 90 apart from the direction of the force
0

being added.

(As can be seen in Fig. 1. 5.2, if force F is added to the spin

axis, the torque will occur at the direction indicated by the arrow and the
gyroscope will rotate in a manner that the spin direction coincides with
the direction of the torque). The first characteristic of the gyroscope is
known as GYROSCOPIC RIGIDITY (or gyroscopic inertia) and the second
one is called GYROSCOPIC PRECESSION. Now, we will show how gyro-
scopes function as the compass.

 As shown in Fig. 1.5.3, assume that the spin axis of the
free gyroscope is set almost horizontally at position A of the north latitude
by the meridian of that position. Now, assume that after a certain period
of time, the position A moves to B due to the rotation of the earth. As a
result, the spin axis of the free gyroscope, will point to a different direc-
tion due to the effect of Gyroscopic Rigidity as shown in the figure. This
means that it will point to a direction apart from the meridian of that posi-
tion. Now, to let the spin axis constantly point to the north, you are to
rotate it to the direction of the rotation of the earth by a ratio that is
proportional to the ratio of the earth's rotation for that particular position.
Now, to rotate the spin axis, you are to use the Precession of the gyro-
scope.

To apply Precession to the spin axis while maintaining it to

a horizontal position, apply force to the spin axis as shown in Fig. 1.5.2.
As the turning rate of Precession is proportional to the applied force, you
can maintain the spin axis on the meridian surface by selecting an appropri-
ate force.

(The turning rate of the earth's rotation for a certain position

on earth is explained as below. In position A in Fig. 1.5.4, if you assume
n as the turning rate of earth's axial direction, the vertical directional
component for that particular pOSition can be expressed as n sin A (where,
A represents latitude). Here, as the spin axis is in a horizontal position,
be sure to express the turning rate of Precession at the horizontal surface
by n sin A .)

 Now, let us discuss about the precession causing structure.
As details of this structure have been described in Chapter 2, therefore,
we will only briefly discuss about the structure in the container before
proceeding to the functions of Precession.

Fig. 1.5.5 illustrates the principles of gyroscopic operation

as the container is viewed from the east side which contains a gyro rotating
in a high speed. The gyrosphere is suspended in the containe r by a sus-
pension wire from the upper end of the container. The lower end of the
suspension wire is connected to the gyrosphere at a position higher than
its center of gravity looking like a pendulum in the container. The container
is then filled with highly viscous fluid to minimize the movements of the
pendulum. Now, the horizontal, azimuth and tilt (distance) pick-off devices
are installed at the crossing of the extensions for the gyrosphere and

container spin axes which are used, respectively, to convert the relative
angular displacements around the vertical axes of the gyrosphere and
container into electrical signals, to detect the relative angular displace-
ments around the vertical axes and to find out the relative displacements of
the spin axial direction of the- gyrosphere corresponding to the container.

Now, the outputs of the horizontal and azimuth pick-off devices

are amplified and added to the horizontal servo and azimuth servo motors
respectively to maintain the angular displacements around the horizontal
and vertical axes of both container and gyrosphere to zero. Then, the tilt
pick-off output is added to the azimuth follow-up system this is the suspen-
sion wire is twisted, and this creates a torque about the vertical axis.
Namely, this is a damping torque to suppress the effects of oscillation of
the gyro about the meridian.

In such a structure, Fig. 1.5.5 shows that the north end A

ascends only by e angle corresponding to the horizontal plane H-H',
whereas B represents a position on the gyrosphere separated from position
A by 180 0
In the same figure, positions A' and B' on the container are
•

always kept on a straight line with points A and B on the gyroscope by using
the functions of horizontal servo system and like the gyro, the container tilts
only by e angle corresponding to the horizontal surface H-H'. At this
point, the suspension wire corresponds to the vertical line and the gravita-
tional force acts on the gyro generating torque around the horizontal axis
and precession around the vertical axis. In this manner, the north seeking
operation is carried out.

Now, let us explain this north seeking operation by means of

an example. Place the gyrocompass on the equator, set the spin axis
horizontally and the north end to the east. Then view this gyro from the
south side. (Fig. 1.5.6)

In this position, no torque can be added to the gyro as the

spin axis is set horizontally and the north end faces the east. Therefore,
the gyro will continue to maintain this direction. However, after the
elapse of a certain period of time, the axle of the gyro will tilt due to the
earth's rotation as shown in B even though the direction of the spin axle
is maintained as it is. However, as the spin axle is tilted, the container
will also be tilted to the same degree by the function of the horizontal servo
system. Now, as the suspension wire coincides with the vertical line, the
gravitational force acts to generate torque around the horizontal axis
starting the precession. As the gyro applies precession in a manner that
the spin axle direction coincides with the torque direction, the spin axle
gradually starts to face the north. This tendency is shown in C and D in
Fig. 1.5.6.

However, as the gyro arrives at position D (that is, when the

spin axle faces the north), the spin axle is tilted (refer to the above figure).
As has been described before, when positioning the gyro on the equator,
see that the spin axle is assigned to a horizontal position as it faces the
north. However, at this point, the tilted status of the spin axis means that
the precession of the gyro is still effective. When projecting on the screen,
the spin axle of the gyro is actually found to form an expanded ellipse on
the meridian surface as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.5.7.

The spin axle performs this elliptic motion in the direction of east to west.
Now, if you can damp this movement as shown by the solid line, you can
probably use this as a compass. As one way of damping, you can consider
applying torque to the gyroscope in a manner that the tilt of the spin axle
actually decreases as it attempts to increase. This tendency of damping
is shown in Fig. 1.5.8. In this diagram, the outermost ellipse indicate s
a locus of the north end for the undamped gyro started at position a.

Now, the following ellipse s indicate the relevent gyro loci at

positions b (assume that Ob is equal to 2/3 of Oa), c, d and e (assume that
oel Ob = Od /Oc = Oe /Od = 2/3). Further, assume that as the gyro (activated
at point a) approaches the meridian surface, the tilt angle of the relevant
spin axle is to be decreased by 1/3. As this is done, the torque moves at
first to b, then to c, d and e. Finally, it will settle on the meridian surface.
However, in actual circumstances, this type of stage by stage approach is
not practiced, where the torque is applied in a manner that it always acts
to decrease the target tilt angle in proportion to the pertinent angle.

Now, this torque can be obtained by using the tilt pick-off

device as mentioned before. To explain this, let us refer back to Fig. 1.5.5.
If you assume ~ as the distance of spin axis directions between the gyro-
sphere center Oland container center 02 and the suspension wire length
as a, the foillwing equation will hold good between ~ , a and the gyrosphere
tilt angle e .

 Now, instead of detecting the gyrosphere tilt angle e directly
from this equation, if you detect the distance 1; between 0, and 02 , you
can obtain the spin axis tilt angle e .

Now, add the tilt pick off device output corresponding to the
gyrosphere tilt angle e to that of the azimuth pick off device and create
a follow-up error in the azimuth follow up system, then twist the suspen-
sion wire to apply vertical axial torque to the gyrosphere. This torque will
now become nearly proportional to the gyrosphere tilt angle. That means
that if the above tilt increases, the torque also increases and if it decreases,
the torque also decreases. If the gyrosphere is horizontal, the torque
becomes zero. At this point, the gyrosphere uses this torque to cause
precession in the decreasing direction of the tilt. Even when the tilt direc-
tion of the gyrosphere reverses itself, the direction of the torque /precession
is just reversed, acting to damp the oscillation of the gyro. This does not
have any affect whatsoever in decreasing the tilt of the spin axis. As a
result, the size of the gyro is not affected by its starting position, although
the north end is continuously suppressed. That means that, while being
damped gradually, the gyro continues the elliptic motion until it comes to
a halt by pointing to the north. Even when halting by pointing to the north,
the gyro must cause precession in proportion to the turning rate of the
earth's motion if it fails to halt on the equator. That means that the gyro
must cause precession simultaneously around the azimuth axis (Fig. 1.5.7
Left to right dire ction) and horizontal axis (Fig. 1. 5.7 Top to bottom direc-
tion) in proportion to the rotation of the earth. However, it must slightly
raise the north end corresponding to the azimuth axis and apply precession
in proportion to the vertical component Sl sin A of earth's rotation to
attain the intended result. On the other hand, this spin axial tilt is detected
by the tilt pick-off device that provides the damping effect. Then, the down-
ward precession is applied to the north end by means of twisting the sus-
pension wire, and soon the gyro fails to stand still in the true north direction
corresponding to the earth. This downward precession raises the north
end to some extent to counterbalance the vertical component of earth's
rotation, and deflect it to a certain angle around the azimuth axis so that
it attains an equilibrium status and declines according to the component
force of the horizontal component of earth's rotation. The deflection pro-
vided for the up-down directional equilibrium is proportional to the regular-
ity of latitude which was, hitherto, known as the latitude error of the
compass. As it represents a theoretical error, you can correct the azimuth
signal transmitted from the gyrosphere at locations other than the gyro-
sphere. However, even if the spin axis tilts as the gyro comes to a halt
by pointing to the north, it fails to cause any torque around the vertical
axis if you adjust the output of the tilt pick-off device to zero. That means
that no errors are generated. This concept which is known as "KA filter",
is entered, as shown in the block diagram in Fig. 1.5.9, before the output
signal of the tilt pick-off device is added to the azimuth follow-up signal.

 The tline constant of this filter is over 30 minutes. It functions
only as a proportional amplifier against the tilt signal during the north
seeking movements of the gyro or when it fluctuates at a cycle faster than
this. On the other hand, as the gyro approaches the setting point, the
output value for the filter begins to fall becoming zero as the gyro finally
stops. This acts to stop the generation of torque around the vertical axis
halting the error generation process. Therefore, this KA filter can be
termed as an automatic latitude error correcting unit of the gyrocompass.

1.5.2 SPEED ERROR

In this section, we will discuss about speed errors which one

cannot avoid when installing the gyrocompass on the vessel. As we have
discussed so far, the rotation of earth is indispensable for the north seeking
characteristics of the gyrocompass. In this process, we are to ensure that
the spin axis of the gyro coincides with the NS directional component of
earth's rotation. As shown in Fig. 1.5.10, the above NS component at
latitude position Ie in the northern hemisphere is expressed as Q cos Ie •
Now, suppose that a vessel, with this gyrocompass on board, is running in
the NS direction at a speed u. At this point, a turning rate of V /R (R: radius
of the earth) is added to the gyrocompass as shown in Fig. 1.5.11. How-
ever, if you leave the course of the vessel free without setting it to N
direction and then divide it in the directions of NS and EW, the NS component
becomes u cos e as shown in Fig. 1.5.12. Now, the turning rate added
to the gyrocompass due to this divided speed can be expressed as 1.) cos
e /R. As can be seen in Fig. 1.5.11, the direction of this turning rate
heads vertically upward which, in fact, represents the W direction. How-
ever, as the spin axis of the gyro tends to coincide with the combined direc-
tion of this apparent turning rate and the actual turning rate of earth's
rotation, errors are generated in reading the gyrocompass which can be
expressed by the following equation. From Fig. 1.5.12, this can be ex-

this error later on. Thus the error is determined in accordance with the

1 .5.3 FOLLOW-UP SYSTEM

The follow-up system can be categorized into two parts,

according to its function: horizontal follow-up system, and azimuth follow-
up system (refer Fig. 1.5.14). Parts and circuits applied to these system
feature high quality and reliability which was obtained over a long period
of application.

1.5.3.1 HORIZONTAL FOLLOW-UP SYSTEM

The horizontal follow-up system is a device which follows-up

the vessel in relation to the motion of the sensitive element which rotates
around the horizontal axis. As shown in the horizontal servo system block
diagram Fig. 1.5.15, horizontal follow-up error signals are input into this
system by the pick-off, and amplified and reformed into a shape suitable
for further processing by the pre-amp.

These signals are then demodulated into a direct current signal

through the switching circuit consisting of FET (field effect transistors),
and input into the servo compensation amplifier in the next step.

In this servo compensation amplifier, in order to stabilize

the servo loop of the follow-up system, a signal phase is compensated by
a single Ie, passes through the switching circuit, whereby it is converted
into an AC signal, passes through the gain adjustment variable resistor
(R14), passes through the servo amplifier consisting of a single IC and two
transistors, and then activates the servo motor, thus following-up the
vessel to the sensitive element. In this system since the follow-up error
and the direction error of the gyro are closely related, each circuit consists
of parts which have few drifts and off-sets.

The system generates the ±15V amp. power from 400Hz 1l0V
power supplied from the inverter circuit.

1.5.3.2 AZIMUTH FOLLOW-UP SYSTEM

The azimuth follow-up system is the system which provides

the gyro with north-seeking and damping torque, in addition to following-up
the follow-up ring by inputting the azimuth error signal and the gyro tilt
signal, which are generated from the pick-off in relation to the movement
of the gyrosphere around the vertical axis.

A s shown in the vertical servo system block diagram Fig.

1.5.9, the signals generated from the azimuth and tilt pick-offs are ampli-
fied and reformed by separate pre-amplifiers. For the tilt signal system,
the pre-amplifier is provided with the gain adjustment function to adjust the
damping of the gyro. The output of the pre-amplifier will be converted into
direct current by the full-wave demodulator for azimuth channel (,pcH), and
by the halfwave demodulator for the tilt channel (XcH) respectively. For the
tilt channel, this is possible because of the filtering provided in the later
stage. The tilt signal converted into direct current is supplied to the am-
plifier, which has a differential constant of 2000 seconds, and a filter con-
stant of 470 seconds. The differential circuit elminates any steady state

output and therefore does not produce latitude error. This filter is so
designed that it does not respond to swift disturbances.

The shaped tilt output is added to the azimuth signal system as

the damping torque signal of the gyro. The adding circuit, which conducts
the above operation, is provided with a compensation circuit to stabilize
the system, including the servo motor which act s as load.

The output of the adding amplifier is converted into an alter-

nating current by the modulator, passes through the gain adjustment
variable resistor (R.62), and is fed to the power amplifier to drive the servo
motor. The power amplifier to drive the servo motor uses hybrid IC and
has enough capacity.

1.5.4 INVERTER CIRCUIT

An outline of the inverter. Let us assume that switches Sl

and S2 as shown in Fig. 1.5.16, open and close reciprocally. A s shown
in Fig. 1.5.17, during the time interval between to to t1, switch Sl closes
and S2 opens, during tl to t2, Sl opens and S2 closes, and this operation
is repeated. During the time interval between to and t1 voltage Vl is input
to the upper-half of the primary coil of the transformer in the direction
illustrated. During t 1 and t2, voltage V2 is input to the lower-half of the
primary coil in the direction illustrated. On the other hand, when this
operation is repeated, the voltage which reverses its polarity alternately
appears on the secondary coil of the transformer as shown in Fig .. 1.5.17.
The frequency of the voltage that appears on the secondary coil is defined
by the switching frequency. In this inverter the transistor undertakes the
switching operation condu cted by switch Sl and S2 in Fig. 1.5.16. Fig.
1.5.18 is an outline of the inverter. The difference between Fig. 1.5.16
and 1.5.18 is that the switches are replaced by transistors.

In Fig. 1.5.18, the pulse transmitting circuit, which supplies

a pulse to A3 J:s omitted, but at terminal CK of A3 a pulse of 800Hz is fed.
Output Q and Q of A3 gain a voltage of 5V and OV alternately in ~sponse
to the input pulse and repeat this voltage change. Output Q and Q comple-
ment each other.

When output Q is at 5V and Q is at OV, the base current of

transistor Q3 flows through 5V-R.16 -CR7 -Q.3 base -Q3 emitter
8 terminal. Since Q3 is conducting, a current flows in the direction as
illustrated. Since a minor voltage drop occurs between the collector and
emitter of the transistor, power voltage E is fully applied to A-C. If A3
is given a pulse, output Q and Q are reversed: that is, Q is at OV and Q is

at 5V. As a result, the base current flows through 5V -R17 -CRB-
Q2 base - Q2 emitter - 8 terminal. Now Q2 is conducting so a current
flows from C to B and the power voltage is fed to B-C.

 In this way, depending on the pulse fed to the CK terminal
of A 3, a current reciprocally flows through the base of transistor Q2 and
Q3. The transistor repeats on and off operations, thus inducing a square
wave voltage on the secondary coil of the transformer.

The 800Hz pulse supplied to the CK terminal of A3 is generated

by the OScillating circuit consisting of an IC, and is unaffected by the load
and the temperature variation etc. A 15V D. C. power supply to the inverter
circuit is stabilized by the switching circuit. By merit of this system,
high efficiency and a stable supply are guaranteed.

1.5.5 SEQUENCE CIRCUIT

The TG3000 gyro compass is provided with a special sequence

circuit which is so designed as to obtain a short settling time.

There are two methods to operate the main gyro compass:

One is the fast settling method (see Section 3. Operation). This method
with the mode switch in SLEN POSITION enables the gyro compass to be
used about two hours after its turn on. The second method with the switch
in RUN POSI'ION, permits compass operation four hours after its turn on.

(a) RUN Position

A s shown in sequence circuit block diagram Fig. 1.5.19, when

the operation switch for the gyro is set in the "RUN" position, the run
timer circuit is biased, and relay Kl is energized for about two minutes,
so that the applied voltage to the rotor is boosted to a rating of one and a
half times, thereby rapidly increasing the rotation of the rotor. At the
same time, the output of the timer is sent to the compass unit. This causes
both the horizontal follow-up and the azimuth follow-up system to be set to
"OFF". (i.e., these system are set to OFF when the output signal from
the timer is in the high level.)

After two minutes, the applied voltage to the rotor is restored

to its normal rating, and the two follow-up system are enabled. This
causes the gyro to seek the real azimuth through gyrocompassing action as
previously de scribed in por. 1. 5 .

As shown in Figure 1.5.19, placing the MODE switch in

"SLEW" position initiates the SLEW tinler which causes a DC braking
current to be applied to the gyro rotor. The braking current will cause
the gyro motor to stop from full speed within four minutes. After about
four minutes the DC brake is switched off and the supply to the SLEW
switch is activated as indicated by illumination of the SLEW lamp.
Operation of the SLEW switch causes the azimuth follow-up amplifier to
drive the azimuth motor CW or CCW as selected, enabling the compass to
be slewed to the desired initial heading. The MODE switch is then placed
in the "RUN" position activating the RUN timer which applies 150 VAC to
the gyro motor for two minutes and then reduces the wheel voltage to
normalllO VAC and activates the horizontal and azimuth servo loops.

Utilizing the SLEW mode permits the compass to be positioned

to the approximate desired heading thus reducing the time required for the
compass to settle on the true meridian.

The following diagram shows the operating principle of the

sequence circuit.

1.5.6 TRANSMISSION CIRCUIT

The transmission system, as shown in Fig. 1.5.21 consists

of the transmitter (15NT4) located in the Master Compass, transmission
unit and repeater compasses.

1.5.6.1 TRANSMITTER (15NT4)

The Transmitter is attached to the support plate of the

Compass Unit. The rotor of the transmitter is turned by the Azimuth
Motor Gear. Fig. 1.5.22 shows the structure of the transmitter. The
stator has three pairs of poles located at intervals of 30 0 , and each has
windings of Sl, S2 and S3. These three pairs of windings from the second-
ary coils.

The primary coil, as shown in Fig. 1. 5.22, is wound a= ng

the three pairs of poles and energized by 1l0V AC, 400Hz, and applied to
terminals HI and H2'

 The rotor is located at the center of the stator and is cross-
shaped.

The size of the voltage induced in the three pairs of secondary

coils differs depending on the position of the cross-shaped rotor. When
the rotor position is as shown in Fig. 1.5.22, the alternating magnetic
flux induced by the energization of the primary coil by 11 OV AC, 400Hz,
passes, from the center of the rotor through the pole of secondary coil 8 2 ,
Consequently, maximum alternating voltage is generated in coil 82-N.
Under the above conditions, minimum alternating voltage is generated in
coils 81-N and 8 3 -N by the leakage flux of the rotor.

Fig. 1.5.23 shows a condition in which the rotor has been

rotated 15° in the clockwise direction from the condition shown in Fig. 1.5.22.

The alternating magnetic flux from terminals R1 and R2 of the

primary coil passes, from the center of the rotor, thrru gh the pole of coil
81 and 82. Consequently, maximum alternating voltage is induced in
secondary coils 81-N and 82-N and minimum alterm ting voltage is induced
in coil 8 3 -N.

Fig. 1.5.24 shows a condition in which the rotor has been

rotated clockwise for another 15°.

The alternating magnetic flux generated by the primary coil

passes, from the center of the rotor, through the pole of secondary coil 81.
Consequently, maximum alternating voltage is induced in coil 81-N and
minimum alternating voltage is induced in coils 82-N and 83-N.

 The magnitude of any of the alternating voltage outputs of coils
Sl-N, S2-N and S3-N is determined by the relationship between the cross
shaped rotor and poles Sl, S2 and S3, then one step of transmitter is
moved 15° on this rotor, and the output voltage varies continuously in four
cycles with respect to one rotation of the rotor. This rotor is engaged with
the azimuth motor gear of the Master Compass at 90X. Thus, one rotation
of the rotor is equivalent to the Master Compass heading change of 4°.

1.5.6.2 STEP AMPLIFIER CIRCUIT

The output of the transmitter is used as the control signal of

the power source to drive the repeater. The power sour ce to drive the
repeater motor is 35V or 70V D. C. The repeater motor is driven by this
direct current which is switched on and off by the transis for controlled by
the signal coming from the transmitter.

Fig. 1.5.25 shows the schematic diagram of one circuit of

the step amplifier and step motor coil. This paragraph concerns the operat-
ing principle of this step amplifier.

If no signal comes from the transmitter (15NT4), the input

voltage of A81A is at OV. As a result, since A81A is a comparator IC, the
output stage transistor in the IC is set to OFF. When A81A output is at OFF,
the base current is supplied to the base of Q81 through resistor R93, thus

turning on Q81. This enables a current to flow into the coil of the step
motor.

If the output signal of the transmi tter is sent to this circuit,

the signal is rectified by CRS1, thus boosting the input voltage to ASIA.
The output signal of the transmitter is compared with the voltage of the
voltage divider circuit of R100 and R101. If the input voltage becomes
higher than the setting value (about 2.5V), the output transistor of A81A is
set to ON. Then the base current of QS1 flows into ASIA which experiences
a less voltage decrease, thereby turning off Q.81.

There are three circuits of this kind, each of these performs

the same operation as described above, and thus rotates the step motor so
as to obtain constant turning between the master compass card and the
repeater card. This step amplifier has the capacity to drive 10D watts per
channel.

1.5.6.3 REPEATER COMPASS CIRCUIT

The step by step motor of the repeater compass is driven by

a pulse signal which generates through the transmission unit from the
transmitter located at the Master Compass. The outline of a step motor is
shown in Fig. 1.5.26.

Three pairs of coils are wound and located at interval of 60°.

The rotors are located in the ce nter of the se cols. A s shown in Fig. 1.5.26,
the rotor is supported in such a way that it can be rotate freely around 0-
point.

 The power supply and a switch are connected to the Step Motor,
as shown in Fig. 1.5.26, and the order of the coils to be energized is chan
changed with the switch.

In this manner, the rotor is driven in ste ps .

The Step Motor makes one complete rotation is 12 steps and

is coupled to the Hepeater Card at a gear ratio of 180 : 1.

Thus, one revolution of the Step Motor corresponds to 2° on

the Hepeater Card, and one step of the rotor become s 2° /12 = 1/6° or
0.166° on the card.

The devices which form the signal for driving the above Step
Motor are the Transmitter and the step amplifier type Step Motor control
circuit in the Transmission Unit.

 SECTION 2

INSTA LLA TION

2.1 GENERAL

The TG3000 Gyrocompass consists of a Master Compass and

a Transmission Unit. The illustration Figure 6-1 shows the size, mounting
dimensions, and other necessary electrical information to install the system.

2.2 MASTER COMPASS

The master compass can be installed either as a direct-reading

compass or as a remotely located unit driving repeater compasses. When re-
motely located, it should be mounted as close as possible to the ship's
metacenter. The Master Compass should be installed near the Transmission
Unit as a 3 meter interconnecting cable is normally supplied to connect these
units. However, if desired, optional cables up to 30 meters are available
on special order.

The Master Compass should be mounted on a flat surface and

may not be installed, inclined to the deck plane.
The unit must be aligned with the fore-and-aft centerline of the ship so that
the alignment lines on the base are parallel with the ship's centerline.
Slots are provided in the base to permit a plus or minus 2.5 degree shift to
correct any misalignment. A sufficient number of shims should be used
to insure the mounting base is not warped or strained when mounting on an
uneven surface. When transporting, the master com pass is shipped in two
packages; the Sensitive Element and the Binnacle. At installation, the service
engineer will fit the Sensitive element into the Binnacle.
If the master compass should also be used as a steering compass, then

mounted magnifying device.

2.3 TRANSMISSION UNIT (TYPE PT-4 & PT-7)

Since the Transmission Unit is equipped with the power source

and repeater switches, it must be conveniently located.

The Transmission Units are of the bulkhead mounted type and

therefore must be installed on a vertical surface to ensure proper cooling
and resistance to drips and dust.

 The door for these Transmission Units can be opened as wide
as 120 degrees on the left hinge. Be sure sufficient space is provided to
accommodate this required access.

The Type PT4 Transmission is used with 3-phase ships power

and the Type PT7 with single phase power. For either type internal jumper
connections are made at installation in accord with instructions on the enclo-
sure to match the ship's AC supply voltage and to set the desired step re-
peater voltage level.

The wire connections inside the transmission unit must be made as

shown below.

OPERATION

3.1 STARTING

When the ship's heading direction is given by a magnetic

compass or if it is made known in reference to the azimuth of the quay
wall, start the gyro compass according to the following procedures.

(1) Turn the mode selector switch on the switch panel of the
power source unit to SLEW. Wait for sometime until a red lamp lights
(approx. 4 minutes).

(2) When the lamp turns on, position the slew switch either to
the left or right as required to slew the compass card to the ships heading.

(3) Thereafter, shift the mode selector switch to RUN (at this
time, a green lamp lights).

In this case, the gyro compass gets set within two hours.

When the ship's heading direction is unknown, start the

gyro compass according to the following procedures. Turn the mode
selector switch on the switch panel of the power source unit to RUN (a
green lamp lights at this time).

In this case, the gyro compass gets set within four hours.

3.3 CARD ILLUMINATION

The intensity of lighting for the compass card can be varied

as desired by turning the dimmer knob on the master compass. To increase
brightness turn the knob clockwise, to decrease brightness turn knob
counterclockwise.

3.4 SHIP'S SPEED ERROR CORRECTION

The ship's speed errors can be obtained from the speed error
graph, Fig. 7.17.

3.5 SYNCHRONIZING REPEATER COMPASSES

(1) Synchronize the Repeater Compasses with the Master Compass:

With the vessel in port, the simplest procedure is to set all Repeaters to
the Master Compass indication.

(2) To synchronize the Repeater Compasses with the Master Com-

pass after the compass is settled on the meridian, turn the Repeater switches
OFF. Push in the Synchronizing knob on the Repeater Compass and turn
until the Repeater Card indicates exactly the same heading as the Master
Compass.

Repeat this step for each Repeater Compass and then turn the
Repeater Switches ON. Check the reading of each Repeater Compass with
the Master Compass again and if out of alignment by one or two degrees,
follow step 3 below.

(3) If the Repeater is energized and out of alignment by one or two

degrees, it can be set to the correct heading by applying sufficient torque to
the synchronizing knob to overcome the locking tendency of the armature.
If this method is used, be sure to hold the lmob while turning.

(4) After any failure of the ships power, repeaters must be

checked with the master compass.

3.6 EMERGENCY

If the ship's main AC supply fails, the system will automatically

switch to the ship's 24V DC supply and the master compass continues to
operate, however, the repeaters will be inoperative.

 In this case, the buzzer in the transmission unit sounds. To
silence the buzzer, turn the silence switch on the transmission unit to
"BATTERY RUNNING".

When A. C. power is restored, all repeaters must be Re-

Synchronize and as explained in paragraph 3.6.

TROUBLESHOOTING

4.1 GENERAL

1) In performing troubleshooting on this Gyrocompass, all the

wealth of data and information contained in this Manual should
be utilized.

In view of e),."treme diversification of troubles, troubleshooting

should be developed with all physical aspects of symptoms
fully re cognized.

2) Since this Gyrocompass is designed to have independent sub-

systems isolated by function, systematic troubleshooting on
these independent system circuits and their connections as
guided by the particular features of troubles can lead to suc-
ce ssful results on almost all cases of troubles.

3) In case it is judged that trouble lies on Sensitive Element,

no shipboard reconditioning is feasible. Hence, the whole
Sensitive Element should be replaced with new one as a
complete assembly. In such an instance, call the nearest
Service Station for the replacement work.

4) Although only common tools are required for troubleshooting,

a digital YOM should be available for checking electronic
circuits.

MAINTENANCE

5.1 GENERAL

The TG3000 Gyrocompass Equipment is designed and con-

structed for ease and siInplicity of onboard maintenance by the average
technician using common tools and test equipment in conjunction with the
system technical manual.

This section describes daily checks, periodical inspection,

replacement and readjustment for maintenance of the Gyrocompass. Since
correct handling is the only way to maintain the performance of the Gyro-
compass over a long peri.od, it is iInportant to follow the directions and
precautions given in this manual.

5.2 ROUTINE INSPECTION

Perform the following checks at least once a day:

1. Check the Repeaters with the Master Compass to ascertain

that the Transmission System is functioning properly. If the
power supply fails for any reason, be sure to checl{ it and,
if necessary, synchronize the Repeaters as soon as the powe r
supply is restored.

2. Check the Compass by aZiInuth observation when possible.

3. Make sure that the power supply voltage is constantly main-

tained.

4. Master Compass ... Normal operation of the Master Compass

should involve no noise, vibration or overheating. With this
in mind, the operator should observe the performance of the
Gyrocompass and make the necessary adjustments should any
malfunction develop.

5.3 PERIODICAL INSPECTION

With the exception of the above-described routine inspection,

the Gyrocompass seldom requires special maintenance checks. It is
desirable, however, to periodically check for loose connections, oil and
component wear and to make the necessary adjustments when required.

5.4 SENSITIVE ELEMENT REPLACEMENT

Step 1. Loosen connector retaining screws and remove connector

(JO).

Step 2. Remove four screws fixing Sensitive Element.

Step 3. Manually move Phantom Ring so that Compass Card indicates

a 180 0 heading.

Step 4. Lower the east side of Horizontal Ring to the extreme end
and take Sensitive Element out.

Step 5. With the procedure given in Step 4, install the new Sensitive
Element.

Step 6. Tighten four screws fixing Sensitive Element.

Step 7. Fix connector (JO).

Step 8. Adjust the Weight of Horizontal Ring so that bubble in East-

West Level assumes the center position.

In making adjustment, ample time must be provided as the

Compass Sphere involves certain time lag in its motion.

5.5 VERTICAL SERVO MOTOR B4 (18SM) REPLACEMENT

Step 1. Check and ascertain the gear mesh between Azimuth Gear
and Pinion so that reassembly can be made with the same
level of gear mesh.

Step 2. Remove three screws fixing Vertical Servo Assembly.

Step 3. Remove Vertical Servo Assembly from support plate.

Step 4. Disconnect leads of Servo Motor.

 Step 5. Loosen three screws fixing Servo Motor slightly, then remove
the screws together with the bracket.

Step 6. Remove Servo Motor from the bracket.

Step 7. Install the new Servo Motor on the bracket.

Step 8. Fix Servo Motor with three screws and retainer.

Step 9. Check the engagement of Servo Motor shaft gear and confirm
if it moves smoothly.

Step 10. Connect Servo Motor leads.

Step 11. Fix Vertical Servo Assembly to the Master Compass.

Step 12. After ascertaining that the gear-to-gear clearance as measured

in Step 1 is maintained, retighten three screws to complete
assembly.

5.6 HORIZONTAL SERVOMOTOR B3 (l1SM) REPLACEMENT

Step 1. Remove two screws fixing Horizontal Amp. PCB connector.

Step 2. Loosen three screws fixing Horizontal Amp. PCB, and

remove PCB.

Step 3. Disconnect four leads from Servo Motor soldered to connector

(colors of leads and pin number should be confirmed).

Step 4. Loosen two screws fixing Servo Motor, remove these screws
together with the retainer, then withdraw Servo Motor.

Step 5. Fix the new Servo Motor with two screws and the retainer.

Step 6. Check gear mesh of the Servo Motor shaft and confirm if the
shaft moves smoothly.

Step 7. Solder the leads from Servo Motor to the connector. Pay
attention to the notes given in Step 3.

Step 8. Fix Horizontal Servo Amp. PCB with three screws.

Step 9. Fix the connector with two screws.

 Step 10. Check to see if the leads from the connector do not come in
contact with the Gear.

Step 11. Confirm if bubble in the East-and-West Level assumes the

center position.

Adjust the Weight of Horizontal Ring, if necessary.

5.7 TRA NSMITTER B7 (15NT4) REPLACEMENT

Step 1. Check and ascertain the gear mesh between Vertical Servo
Assembly and Gear.

Step 2. Loosen four screws fixing Bracket, and remove Bracket from
su pport plate.

Step 3. Disconne ct Transmitter leads.

Step 4. Loosen two screws, and remove Gear fixed to Transmitter

shaft .

Step 5. Loosen three screws fixing Transmitter, and remove the

screws together with the retainer.

Step 6. Remove Transmitter from Bracket.

Step 7. Fix the new Transmitter to Bracket.

Step 8. Secure Transmitter in position with three screws and the

retainer.

Step 9. Fix Gear to Transmitter shaft, and secure it in position with

two screws.

Step 10. Connect Transmitter leads.

Step 11 . Fix Bracket to support plate with four screws.

Pay attention to the notes given in Step 1.

Step 12. Check gear mesh.

Step 13. Make zero adjustment of Transmitter (See notes given in Ad-
justing Procedure). (5.8.2)

5.8 ADJUSTING

5.8.1 HORIZONTAL RING EAST-WEST DIRECTION BALANCE

ADJUSTMENT

In either of the following cases, the East-West Direction

Balance should be checked and adjusted:

A) When Sensitive Element is replaced with new one.

B) When Horizontal Servo Motor is replaced with new one.

C) When Horizontal Servo Amp. PCB is replaced with new one.

D) When any maintenance work is effected in such a way that

change in weight around the axis of Horizontal Ring is involved.

E) When system balance is altered due to ageing effect.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

Make adjustments so that the East-West level assumes 50' ± 5'

by adjusting the weights fitted to the East and West sides of Horizontal Ring.

In making adjustment, ample time must be provided as the

Compass Sphere involves certain time lag in its motion.

5.8.2 TRANSMITTER B7 (15NT4) ZEROING

This must be carried out whenever replacement is made on

Transmitter.

ZEROING PROCEDURE

1) Loosen three screws fixing Transmitter slightly so that it

move slightly ..

2) Align the Card of Master Compass with 0°.

3) With the mode switch positioned at SLEW, setting should be

made by manually moving Transmitter so that Step Amp.
out put is available only between No. 1 and No.5.

 4) Tighten three screws and secure the Transmitter.

5.8.3 INVERTER PCB ADJUSTMENT

When replacement is made on Inverter PCB, checks should be

made on voltage and frequency, and adjustment be rna de, if ne ce ssary .

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

1) Place the Gyro Compass in operation, and wait for about 10

to 15 minutes.

2) Adjust Variable Resistor (VR.), R-6 (5 k n ) within PCB so

that the voltage at 0", 1l0V secondary terminal of Trans-
former T1 assumes 1l0V ± 5V.

3) Similarly, adjust Variable Resistor, R-13 (100 k n) so that

frequency assumes 400Hz ± 5Hz.

Either a synchro scope or frequency counter is required for

the adjustments.

4) Recheck should be made in 30 minutes after completion of

the above-described adjustments, and go over again if further
adjustments are necessary.

5.8.4 HORIZONTAL SERVO AMP GAIN VR(R.14) ADJUSTMENT

This must be carried out when replaceme nt is made on Amp.

PCB.

1) Place the Compass in operation.

2) Turn the Gain VR R14 (50 k n) clockwise, and check the

generation of hunting.

(This VR is of the multi-turn type.)

3) Thence, turn the Gain VR counter-clockwise little by little,

find out the position at which hunting starts, and set it at
the position further down by 1/2 to 1 turn therefrom.

4) Manually turn the Servo Gear and confirm that there is no

hunting generated.

5.8.5 VERTICAL SERVO AMP GAIN VR(R62) ADJUSTMENT

This must be carried out when replacement is made on the

Amp. PCB.

1) Place the Compass in operation.

2) Turn the Gain VR R62 (50 k,,) clockwise, and check if hunting
is generated.

3) Thence, turn the Gain VR counterclockw ise little by little,

find out the position at which hunting starts, and set it at
down approximately 5° therefrom.

4) Manually turn the Servo Gear and confirm that hunting is not
generated.

5.8.6 VERTICAL SERVO AMP DAMPING VR (R48) ADJUSTMENT

This VR (R48) for adjustment has been shop-adjusted, thus

requiring no further field-adjustment.

However, when damping factor is different, an adjustment

should be made with this VR.

5.8.7 ADJUSTING THE CONSTANT ERROR WITH THE SUSPEN-

SION WIRE

1) Remove the four screws which fix the sensitive element on

the Mounting Ring, and a screw which fixes the connector.
Then dismount the sensitive element from the Master Compass.

2) After confirming that the top level of Si-oil inside the sensi-
tive element is below the lower surface of the cap, remove
'four screws fixing the cap, and then remove the cap.

3) Correct errors by the Fine Adj. screw (tangent screw) on

the top of the suspension assembly.

4) When the Gyro Error is WIly (high reading), adjust the sus-
pension wire assembly by turning it clockwise, viewed from
the top; when this error is E Ily error, adjust it by turning
counterclockwise.
