Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
Lesson Idea Name: Plant growth
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 7
Content Standard Addressed:
S7CS1. Students will explore of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and
will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works.
a. Understand the importance of—and keep—honest, clear, and accurate records in science.
Technology Standard Addressed:
1 Empowered learner, 5 Computational thinkers, 6 Creative communicators
Selected Technology Tool: Excel/Google Sheets

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement: Students will each be hands on planting a seed of the same plant on their own. They will be
broken into groups of four, comparing their plant’s growth with one another encouraging teamwork.
Representation: Recall student’s FOK by asking about what all trees/bushes/plants outside (not tended o by
humans) get that make them thrive. (Sunlight, water, air)
Action and Expression: Students will be hands on planting their own seeds and measuring them as they grow
over the weeks.
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will be given the opportunity to each plant their own seed from the same vegetable. They will be
placed into groups of four, and each student in the group will be assigned a liquid to strictly only hydrate their
plant with. Students will create an excel spreadsheet with the liquid categories and weeks in the quarter
numbered along the top.
Each student will measure their plant on Fridays and share the results with their group to add to their own
excel sheet- this will continue for a whole year quarter. At the end of the quarter the group will compare all
the growths on their spreadsheets and decide which liquid worked best in hydrating their plant so it could
grow properly.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson gives students an example of how to use productivity tools properly along with giving them the
opportunity to put their recording skills to the test as they must keep track of information for long periods of
time. The idea of plant growth is not a middle school standard, but more of a fun way to get into the habit of
using tools like spreadsheets.
