around the world having bonding with her family and playing volleyball.

Career Assessment Procedures

An initial orientation was shared to Jhyk to get both her consent and her parents’.

In addition, to inform her about the career case study. A facilitator – made questionnaire

was given to her to fill it up. A follow-up interview was conducted to clarify information

based from her answers in the questionnaire.

Descriptive essays of Jhyk were collected from a schoolmate and a friend. The

essays were then conceptualized.

Informal interviews were also conducted with her teachers, classmates and

volleyball team mates to validate the essays and to gather further information.

Multiple intelligences survey based in part from the Frames of Mind of Howard

Gardner (1983) and personality assessment profile based in part from Myers-Briggs Type

Indicator conceptualized by Sherfield (1999) were administered to her. The school

guidance counselor assessed her I.Q. as well through the SLU Non – verbal Intelligence

test and SLU Verbal Intelligence test. She was then referred to the guidance office

afterwards for follow up conference regarding the results of the assessments given to her.

Behavioral Observations

Jhyk is doing well in her studies. Her general average for the second grading

was 92 percent. She excels in T.L.E. class while MAPEH was her subject which had the

lowest grade in the previous quarter as reflected in her grades. She attends classes

regularly and on time. She submits the requirements although there were times she

submitted them late. She somehow excels in individual, group and class activities and

performances. She is a team player as observed by her teachers because she actively

participates and contributes to her group and acts as the leader sometimes. A school

mate and a close relative of her observed that she is always wearing her uniform. She

added that Jhyk also joins school’s organization like sports and broadcasting.

She also participates in co-curricular and extra- curricular activities. Among them

was the Festival of Talents: Siningtanghal and garnered second place in native

handicrafts when she was in Grade 7. She was the secretary of the Supreme Student

Government (SSG), the highest student organization in the school when she was in Grade

8. However, she moderately performed her function that year as observed. She focused

more in her academic requirements and in sports. Since elementary until the present, she

plays volleyball. She consistently competes yearly with her team in the school intramurals

and in the district athletic meet. She trains regularly with or without their coach’s

supervision as observed by her team mates. She has a good temper as an athlete but
loses courage if their team is under pressure brought by their opponents. She is a good

athlete.

She is kind, neat and demonstrates self-care. Most of the time jolly. She plays jokes

with her teachers as well. She is aware of her priorities in life such as her studies over

teenage relationship with the opposite sex.

In the community, a friend of her observes that she is not always joining church

activities but she is always joining other organization/activities such as barangay league.

This activities help her boost her confidence more at school she added.

Assessment Results and Interpretation

Jhyk is a visionary lady. She has a good academic standing in her class. She does

somehow her responsibilities as a student. She obeys the student code of conduct of the

school. She actively participates in the school and community activities. She is an active

athlete.

She perceives herself in the future engaging in the world of business sector. She

wants exploring the world, adventures and merry- making activities. She likes working with

people, establishments, and offices.

Her top two multiple intelligences are visual/spatial and interpersonal, and

secondly is logical or mathematical. These intelligences are aligned with her ambition in

establishing a business. Interpersonal skills are crucial in dealing with people especially if

she pursues building her hotels and restaurants. Harmonious relationships with her

customers will add success to her endeavour as well as working in an office. Her

participation in the making of native handicrafts showcased her intelligence in

visual/spatial. Visual intelligence will help her in the advertisements and interior and

exterior designs of the buildings she wants to build. It could attract customers. Establishing

a business needs financial literacy. Her intelligence in mathematical and logical will help

her manage her finances and revenues. It will help her avoid bankruptcy.
According to her personality assessment profile, her identified personality type is

Extrovert-Sensing-Thinking and Judging (ESTJ). This kind of personality accordingly, are the

individuals who like to get things done; focus on results; very good at organizing; good at

seeing what will not work; responsible; and realist. The result of this personality assessment

profile fits in her description and behaviors observed. Her personality type is parallel to

her intelligences. Extrovert somehow possesses interpersonal skills. Sensing uses the

different senses of the body which is compatible with visual because it uses the sense of

sight and touch. Creativity and imagination are present in visually intelligent individuals

which uses the senses to produce or create an output. Both visual and sensing individuals

learn best when they use their senses. Logical intelligent persons are good organizers and

result-oriented. Thinkers and judgers are logical and orderly people. Her logical thinking

and her orderly kind of personality will help her manage well a business or to be

productive in an office or a smart athlete.

Jhyk has an average I.Q. based from her assessment. This level of mental

capability is able to learn and pursue business as she wanted.

Business venture is aligned with STEM, ABM and TVL tracks in the senior high. If she

wants to pursue business in food services and beverages, she can have TVL major in

cookery which is available in the school. Moreover, T.L.E. was her strength. STEM is fitted

in aeronautics. Since she also wants working with people and in offices, she can enrol

HUMMS in the senior high which is also available in the school and also largely available

in the universities.

Her initial course in tertiary at the present is business management or hotel and

restaurant management. Both are aligned in STEM, ABM and TVL tracks.

Trait and factor theory by Parsons assume that career choice may be facilitated

and career outcomes optimized through a fairly straightforward process of matching an

individual’s characteristics to the world of works. Jhyk has unique characteristics that can

be matched to the necessary requirements of certain jobs. One of the basic assumptions

of this theory is- the closer the fit between a person’s traits and the trait requirements of
that person’s occupation, the greater the likelihood for successful job performance and

personal satisfaction. This is one of the aims of career coaching, to narrow the gap

between the self and the occupations. Assessments, observations, and interviews were

conducted to Jhyk to determine the job or dream she looks for is congruent to her

characteristics, capabilities and values. This is to prevent her shifting courses or to be

unproductive in her occupation in the future.

This theory is supported by the theory of work adjustment by Dawis and Lofquist

stating that work personality and work environment should be amenable. It is true that

job placement is best accomplished through a match of worker traits and with the

requirements of work. In the analysis of information gathered about Jhyk, it appears that

her intelligences, personality type, mental capability and values are aligned to her initial

career plan. The requirements of the job she wants are somehow present in her self as

well. It is somehow predicted that she will achieve her career and personal goals based

from the information obtained. She may attain job or professional satisfaction because

of the association of her traits to her dream job.

Reflections

I agree with the principles and assumptions of the theories I presented in this study.

The characteristics, capabilities and values of an individual need to be matched to the

requirements of the job/occupation he is aiming for. It is for the person to find job

satisfaction, productivity and professional and personal growth.

Career planning is incorporated in the curriculum of Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao

(EsP) in the junior high which I am teaching among the Grades 7 to 9. I start the career

planning with activities on career goals. Afterwards, I facilitate self- awareness activities

to foster self- analysis. I go first with the understanding of the self which includes identifying

their intelligences, personality profile, learning styles, SWOT analysis, grades and others.

Then, we explore the world of works which includes the current trends in the market

place. I do these processes because I am with these theories in this study in facilitating

career planning with my students. It is because I have noticed the significance of

matching the self to one’s career and vice versa to my previous students and personal

observations.
